A happy young European girl, in a Deliveroo uniform and a crash helmet, texting on her mobile. She understood very little English so I used my hands and my phone to ask if I could take her photo. I got her name by saying ‘my name is Chris’ and then pointing to her. And of course the standard Brighton graffiti in the background.

Two years in and out of Covid and lockdowns and this street photo has become the new norm on street corners. Pre COVID in Brighton I’m sure street corners were occupied by rough sleepers and refugees.

Wesley and Darren - As I walked across the Black Rock Car Park I couldn't miss these guys sitting proudly astride their quad bikes. When I stopped to talk with them and ask if I could take their photo they both got off the quads. I said the bikes wouldn't be the same without them on them so they happily got back on.

Walking my usual morning route I saw this guy sitting in the lovely arched window of the Kemptown Enclosures. I've photographed strangers there before and they are usually booked through Air B&B. Jason told me he owned the apartment which overlooks Dukes Mound and Black Rock Beach. I could only say W-O-W. I was walking along a public footpath in front of his window which is bordered by the most beautiful architectural plants, most of which I've photographed and posted on Flickr. While I was taking the shots of Jason we talked about the plants and how they have been neglected for many many years by the Council. I told him about a Brighton Facebook page which is trying to set up a volunteer group to save the architectural plants and clear the overgrown weeded areas.

Today I went to the Hockney Experience at Lightroom, 8 minutes walk from Kings Cross/St Pancras in London. The photos I’ve taken include the audience lying and sitting around absorbed in the experience. It was spectacular.

I can only describe it using the websites words:

Holoport, the audio company, radically transforms how audiences engage with sound.

Disguise is a platform which enables audiences to experience spectacular visual experiences.

Walking through all the bright and somewhat flashy cars on Madeira Drive I stopped to talk to this guy and find out a bit more about the event. His name was Graham and when I asked if I could take his photo with the car he tried to lay across the bonnet! I suggested standing in front of it might make a better image. The car was a 70’s Mustang.

A young San child, immersed in a quiet moment of thought, leans against the ancient trees of Namibia’s arid landscape. This powerful image captures the deep connection between people and nature, where wisdom is passed through generations and life flows with the rhythms of the desert.

It wasn’t the beach or the skyline or the landmark that stayed with you—it was this. A quiet moment in a tiled shower, steam curling around vibrant strands of hair, the day’s salt and sun washing away. The colors—purple, blue, green, yellow—felt like a mood, a memory, a palette of everything the trip had been. One hand on the wall, the other resting on a head full of thoughts.

Later, back in the rhythm of routine, this image returns—not for its drama, but for its intimacy. A private pause in the middle of motion. A reminder that travel isn’t just about where you go—it’s about how you feel when no one’s watching.

I’ve been photographing life in and around the Old Reading Room (1820’s) on Black Rock for about 5 years. In the last few months work has been going on to redevelop the site as retail/leisure space with a large part of the work being to put all services - water, waste, electricity etc.

I was fortunate on Saturday to speak with the main contractor and he told me they had found 2 hidden doors which were only noticed because of air vents above them. The doors are in the main structure leading to a long room with an enormous floor to ceiling fireplace. He kindly showed me the area and let me photograph the newly revealed room and the fireplace. The room had a massive down pipe coming from the high ceiling above and a blocked soak away, which showed the Old Library, at some point in its history had running water.

Celebrating 50 years of the Sussex Gay Liberation Front. The Campaign remembered and uplifted some of the trailblazers whose actions ignited, and continued to the Pride Movement.

I posted a portrait of Tara holding a chicken few days ago. After I took it she went and sat on the leather sofa in the travellers open air lounge area and I captured this shot. She is laughing with Nettle who lives in a caravan on Black Rock.

I made it to the parade but there was no way I was going to attempt to take me camera out in the pouring rain. So I found myself a doorway to stand in, protected from the wet but with a passing view. I'm pleased the photo's reflect the weather.

This rainbow mural of Winston Churchill wearing stockings and suspenders resulted in a complaint from the local council because of the former prime minister’s trademark “V” sign which he used throughout the war. The council initially asked for the hand gesture to be painted over but then backed down after its 'historical significance' was pointed out. They were not concerned over the fact that he was wearing a rainbow of coloured stockings and suspenders as that was felt to be in keeping with the character of Brighton.

Wading into a confluence of more than one kind, beyond the Ganga, the Yamuna and and the mystical Saraswati, the boats at Prayag drifted into a merging of resolve, intent, belief, faith, and the people who carried them. The Mahakumbh offered unmatched opportunities to delve into stories and paint vivid pictures.

captured in the lively streets of el arenal, this image highlights a moment of quiet reflection. a young woman sits on the steps, her face touched with a hint of sadness as she looks down at her phone. around her, the world moves on—partygoers in vibrant dresses, full of energy and life, pass by, seemingly unaware of her solitude. the contrast between her stillness and the bustling background emphasizes the transient nature of emotions, where moments of loneliness can exist even in the midst of celebration.

Two Mercedes, two eras, same street.

The 2004 leans slightly forward, worn but still full of presence — like an old friend who’s seen the city change a hundred times.

Its color isn’t dull — it’s seasoned. It doesn’t shine, it settles.

And right behind it, higher on the hill, the 2022 — clean, confident, a new chapter waiting to be written. But it doesn’t own the frame. It respects the old one’s space.

I graded the image to let the mood form around the 2004. Not to dramatize it, but to amplify what’s already there.

The rain helped — soft light, soft sound, soft memory.

Shot from inside the car with the Xperia 1.

No tricks. Just a pause in motion, and a nod to machines that had more soul than speed.

The numbers of starlings migrating to the marina gets less and less each year. I'm hoping that they're visiting Brighton Pier instead.

Thousands of teachers, pupils, parents and grandparents took to the streets of Brighton and Hove to protest about government funding and pay. They were joined by members of other unions as could be seen from some of the banners.

I got the bus into town today with the intention of walking home taking photos along the seafront. But when I got off the bus at the station I found myself at the front of a protest march against everything the WHO, the world scientific and medical advisors and our government are doing with regard to the coronavirus. I was quite taken back by such strong views on the subject and the belief that Covid is a hoax.

Three Visitors, One Room: A Gallery in Motion and Pause

They moved slowly, each drawn to something different—a sculpture, a painting, a placard with just enough text to spark thought. One held a guide, another leaned in, and the third stood back, letting the room speak. The dancer in gold held her pose, the portrait watched in profile, and through the doorway, more stories waited in glass and shadow.

Later, when the trip was just a memory, this moment lingered—not for the art alone, but for the way people moved through it. The hush, the light, the shared reverence. Because sometimes, the most meaningful travel memories happen not in motion, but in stillness—when strangers become part of the exhibit, if only for a moment.

This surreal fine art photograph, part of the ongoing series Synthetic Dreams, personifies the fragility of those who retreat into their inner worlds—challenging the boundary between the artificial and the real.

I was photography the graffiti and NCP car park in Brighton Streets and he knowingly walked straight into my frame.

For those who don’t know the Brighton Marathon course - the runners come out of the city along the coast road going east, which becomes a dual carriageway for part of the route. The route goes as far as a roundabout at Ovingdean which the runners 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️ go around and return up the other side of the dual carriage way heading west and back into the city.

When I first saw Derry-Ann she was stepping into a pretty shaded area out of the sun and there was a perfect green background for me to take her photo. Maybe a bit bright but it went well with her vibrant outfit. When she told me her name was Derry-Ann I immediately asked if she was from Northern Ireland. She explained her ancestors being her grandparents and great grandparents were from Norther Ireland but she never knew any further back. She told me she had made her own outfit as she had all her life and she came from a family of tailors and seamstresses. I took an extra photo of her hands adorned with black lace gloves and lots of jewellery. Quite a lady.

I was weeding some plants on the patio when this little chap

put his head out of his shell. I thought ‘he’s cute’ and moved him to a different plant to photograph him. Little did I know he was such a sensitive little soul to danger and stress!

What Causes Snails to Bubble?

The gastropods that produce mucus are very sensitive to danger and stress. When they are scared or in too much danger, they produce mucus in the form of bubbles. The bubbles form inside the snail’s body and are released when the snail is disturbed. Snails that produce mucus are often confused with those that have been molested, so human beings are often not aware that they need help.

The mucus produced by snails has several functions in the environment. First, it protects the snail’s body from bacteria and fungi that could cause damage. It is also an odor barrier. This means that it masks or blocks the smell that snails emit. This is very important because many other types of animals, such as other types of snails, birds, and even humans, are allergic to it. Snails that produce mucus usually do it only when they feel like it. They usually do not produce it all the time.

I couldn't find my boots today so went for an autumn walk round Arlington Reservoir in my trainers. Not a good idea!

Interestingly the water levels were almost up to the top and a check on their website said it is currently 81.60% full. I last went there a few years back when the UK had a drought, a hose pipe ban and the reservoir had almost dried up. What a difference a few years make.

NB: Photo taken with my iPhone and surprisingly the quality isn't very good. A lot of the image seems patchy and I'm not sure why? The latest iPhone 11 costs £729 on Amazon and the ad says 'It just got a whole lot harder to take a bad photo'. I'd love to try it out?

I met Francesca and Giada on Black Rock when all the travellers and their caravans had left. All that remained were the brown leather sofas. The girls were taking photo's and told me they were studying photography in Brighton. We talked a lot about the future plans for the site. I asked if I could take their photo's on the sofas and they happily struck up these poses. Not exactly portraits but very much in keeping with Black Rock.

Life on Black Rock - The architecturally beautiful Kemp Town library has been abandoned and derelict for probably as long as the rest of the Black Rock site which is 40 years. My photostream has many photos of the site with a range of homeless occupants, their furnishings, graffitied walls and rubbish.

Last year plans were put into the council to develop the area and huge public consultation took place with the marina and surrounding areas. The building was to become an income generating internet meeting place/ cafe and I understand it was all approved and work was due to start in 2021. The homeless were moved out yet again.

Last week it was at last boarded up and it looked hopeful that work would begin as planned. Then I learned that the plans had hit a problem in that there are no utilities in the building, no electric, no water, no waste drainage and obviously no internet connections. An unbelievable oversight!

The Volks Railway has partially operated by volunteers for many, many years. MIck is an engineer and has volunteered for the railway for 5 years. Tim is retired from the railways and has been a volunteer for 27 years. Today they were working with Barry, a Volk’s Engineer preparing the track ready for the reopening in April.

I was surprised to meet this large group of youngsters on the undercliff path handing out cards promoting the Brighton food bank, collecting donations and alerting passers by to the death of Mercy Baguma in Glasgow this week.
