Pair of Great Hornbills on a tree in Jhirna range of Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand.

This sighting was during January when the breeding season for Great Indian Hornbills begins. They breed in monogamous pairs. With this sighting being during the breeding season, these two were likely to have paired up for mating.

People lining up at langar service at a farmers' protest site near Ludhiana, Punjab.

In Punjabi culture "langar sewa" is a community run and funded selfless kitchen service that gives free food to any and every one without any prejudice; true equality. Participation is considered an act of faith that brings one closer to God.

A purple heron guarding its nest near Ludhiana, Punjab.

I had probably clicked the same heron nearby, during monsoon breeding season earlier in the year. And now it was on a tree guarding its eggs or hatched young-lings. Fascinating!

Plain Prinia bird flying to catch an insect in a paddy field near Ludhiana, Punjab.

Prinias - like other flycatcher birds - use a technique called hawking to feed on flying insects. They sit on a perch and then take short flights to catch insects midair. Then they return to a perch again to repeat the process.

Pair of Great Hornbills on a tree in Jhirna range of Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand.

As another male (hidden in the tree foliage) joined the foraging pair of hornbills on this tree, the pair became quite vocal. This was likely a display to the intruding male of the pair's affirmation of having chosen each other to mate.

First the male raised its head straight up and started making loud calls. The female soon joined in to make it a duet. Hornbills extend and retract their neck with each vocal blast. As their calls became rapid, the pair seemed to be shooting out the calls like a gun on semi-auto fire mode. This was one of the most fascinating sights I've seen in the wild.

A feral dog scavenging on a bovine carcass at the bank of Ropar Lake, Punjab.

For the past few years, increased threat from cow vigilantes has hindered traditional removal and processing of bovine carcasses by supposed lower castes. Therefore, many farmers are now forced to throw such carcasses in places like water bodies.

Female of Pied Bush-Chat bird near Ludhiana, Punjab.

This bird shows sexual dimorphism, that is the males and females look different. The bird gets its name from the black and white plumage of the male.

Bar-headed Goose flying over Pong Lake near Dhameta, Himachal.

These geese have a unique physiology that enables them to breathe intensively even at extreme altitudes where the air can be three times thinner than at sea-level.

A fishing boat with migratory birds around in Pong Lake, Himachal.

Fishing boats undertake permitted fishing in the lake. They also used to take visitors for boating excursions. Now that entry in the lake area is controlled along with boating, these fishermen can no longer make the side buck from joy rides.
