Matthew "Matt" O'Brien the USA author and journalist has published an article in The Atlantic citing ‘Spain Is Doomed: Why Austerity Is Destroying Europe’. In the article O’Brien states “Nearly a quarter of Spain's population is unemployed. Half of its youth are out of work. And it's only going to get worse. Spain is supposed to trim its deficit by some 5.5 percent of GDP over the next two years. That's not a recipe for growth. Just ask the IMF, which downgraded its projections for Spain's economy back in January. What matters for a nation is its GDP. That's a country's equivalent of personal income. If Spain's GDP is set to fall for the foreseeable future -- and it is -- then who would want to lend to Spain? The markets gave their answer -- practically nobody! -- and ECB was forced to fill the void by giving Eurobanks free money to then invest in sovereign debt. Yields came down. European policymakers declared "Mission Accomplished." …Rather than consider the possibility that the economy might work differently than they think, they have settled on a simple message: The beatings will continue. Unfortunately, morale will continue to not improve. Eventually, you have to think leaders in Europe's beat-up countries will begin to wonder if life might be better outside the euro zone.”

On Monday, December 19th, we partnered with Lenovo computers to build out the ultimate art-themed smackdown. Hosted at Villain in Williamsburg, guests stepped into a fully imagined warehouse art party. That night it was all about participation. We created a series of art activities to get guests making art and meeting each other. Guests captured the revelry of the night in Ventikoland’s projection photo booth. After some savory Espolón cocktails and tacos the art battle was ready to begin. 2 amazing artists competed head-to-head in a series of timed challenges and a head-to-head battle of creative awesomeness. Interludes were provided by a pop & lock round girl, battling breakdancers, and a duo of beatboxers.

Today we celebrate a voice that sounds like it fell from the moon, bounced off a Berlin rooftop, and landed right in the middle of a punk rock carnival. I’m talking about Nina Hagen.

 

Now Nina, she wasn’t just a singer. No, she was more like a thunderstorm wearing lipstick. Born in East Berlin back when the wall cut the city like a scar, she grew up where art and politics were tangled together like headphones in your pocket. Her mother was an actress, the kind who knew how to command a room, and Nina learned early that a stage isn’t just a place to stand, it’s a place to explode.

 

Some singers warm up their voice before a show. Nina sounded like she warmed up by talking to aliens and gargling with lightning. She started out singing in East Germany, state-approved songs, tidy arrangements, the kind of music that behaved itself. But Nina wasn’t the behaving type. You could hear it in her voice, that wild operatic yodel that could turn into a punk scream before you had time to blink. Eventually she drifted west, like a strange bird flying over the wall before it came down. And once she landed in the West Berlin underground in the late ’70s—well, that’s when things really got interesting.

 

Punk was already stomping around the clubs, safety pins and leather jackets everywhere, but Nina showed up dressed like a cosmic cabaret star who’d just stepped out of a science fiction opera. The Nina Hagen Band kicked up a racket that mixed rock guitars, opera scales, reggae grooves, and whatever else happened to wander into the room.

 

Listening to her records is like flipping through radio stations on a spaceship. One minute she’s singing sweet and theatrical, the next minute she’s howling like a wolf that just read Nietzsche. She could hit notes that would make opera singers blink twice and she’d do it over a punk riff that sounded like it was welded together in a garage.

 

But Nina wasn’t just noise and spectacle. She had that fearless thing about her. The kind of artist who’d sing about politics, spirituality, love, UFOs, sometimes all in the same breath. She made music the way some people make collages: tearing pieces from everywhere and gluing them together until the whole thing starts glowing. And if you ever saw her on television back in the day, you’d know she had the spirit of a vaudeville comedian, a punk prophet, and a cartoon character all rolled into one pair of platform boots.

 

Some voices try to sound pretty. Nina’s voice tried to sound free. And that’s a rare thing. You know, music history is full of people who followed the map. Nina Hagen was the one who drew monsters in the margins and said, “Let’s go there.”

 

So wherever you are today, put on one of her records sometime. Let that voice rattle the furniture a little. It might remind you that music doesn’t always have to walk politely through the door. Sometimes it crashes through the ceiling wearing glitter and combat boots.

Friendly Fire (site-specific sculpture)

Dimensions: 215 x 185 x 81 inches

Information: “Friendly Fire” was conceived through my 4-month Residency as part of the SF Recycling & Disposal Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program. With 24-hour access to their wonderful studio facilities and support from their expert staff, I was able to produce “Friendly Fire”, a large-scale sculpture series uniting the surrounding Brisbane Mountain range with my deep appreciation for Archie Comics. With recycled wood gleaned from the exhibition site I was able to launch a vibrant campfire scene with abstracted Archie iconography. The 6 large-scale sculptures formed a heart-warming view of American culture and mythology, with fluorescent hard-edge colors inspired by the safety vests worn by the facility’s personnel. By imaginatively connecting the industrialized architecture with a rustic cultural pastime I was able to meet the challenges of this most fantastic landscape.

A Glitch "Perversis Sensibus ~ Ètude III”

 

This art piece were created for my PhD and based on a Digital and Analog Aesthetic Research on "Artistic Practices, Digital Art in Social Networks and Net Art", some digital techniques used of artistic diversity, such as the re-mixed appropriation of image or video, also work conceived as original data work called creative altered binary code, datamoshing, generative art and glitch art worked in all its forms and expressions; works of art with a strong focus decoding the i-frames of images and videos (also known as key frames and altered or distorted creative binary code) mixed with seductive techniques of Pixelsorting Art; making it seem extremely sensitive and abstract; created exclusively for the virtual gallery on-line.

Lotería (Spanish word meaning "lottery") is a traditional mexican game of chance, similar to bingo, but using images on a deck of cards instead of numbered ping pong balls. The traditional Lotería card deck is composed of a set of 54 different cards, each with a different picture. The caller is called cantor, Spanish for "singer". The winner is the first that shouts "Lotería!", in this case “Loanatería!”

You know, some people spend their whole lives trying to fit into the States, and some people spend their whole lives standing on the sidewalk describing it. Allen Ginsberg was one of those sidewalk people.

 

Born in New Jersey, which has produced more poets than most people realize and more highways than anybody needs, Ginsberg came into the world carrying two suitcases: one full of books and one full of questions. The books belonged to his father. The questions belonged to everybody else.

 

He wandered across the country looking for answers and mostly found other questions. That's how it goes. Sometimes you go looking for the truth and end up finding a saxophone player, a runaway, a saint, and a lunatic sitting at the same diner counter at three in the morning. Then you've got a poem.

 

Ginsberg listened to the U.S.A. the way some people listen to a train that's just barely coming in. He heard the static. He heard the sermons. He heard the traffic and police sirens and jazz records spinning in apartments where the rent was overdue. He heard people talking to themselves because nobody else would listen.

 

A lot of folks knew him as a Beat poet. But "beat" is one of those words that can mean tired, defeated, rhythmic, or blessed, depending on who's saying it and what time of night it is. Ginsberg seemed interested in all four meanings. He believed poetry ought to be alive enough to breathe. That's why his lines stretch out like highways across Nebraska. They don't stop where they're supposed to stop. They stop when they run out of road. He made some people angry. That's almost unavoidable if you're paying attention. I guess every country has always had a complicated relationship with its prophets. First it ignores them, then it argues with them, then it puts them in textbooks.

 

What I always liked about Ginsberg was that he wasn't afraid to sound amazed. That's a rare thing. Cynicism is cheap. Wonder costs more. He could look at a crowded city street and find something holy in it, or look at something holy and find something human. He traveled far enough to know that everybody's carrying something invisible. Some carry grief. Some carry dreams. Some carry grocery bags.

 

Most carry all three.
