When given the opportunity to visit Pixar, you take it. Hopefully I'll be able to visit again in some capacity in the future.

After 16 years of negotiations two Giant Panda's were "given" during the royal visit of the Dutch King and Queen to Chine in October 2015. Since May 30th people can visit Xing Ya and Wu Wen in their new residence "Pandasia" in Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, the Netherlands. In time Xing Ya and Wu Wen are supposed to play a part in restoring the number of Panda bears living in the wild to a healthy population. Right now only 1834 Panda's still live in the wild and their number is, despite their protected status, still dropping.

I stopped by to see how Belmont is doing at his foster home. He was on top of the kitchen cabinet! His people said he hangs out there a lot when they're away but when they come home he comes down to play.

He is making serious progress, he will stay out and about even when new people come to visit ... as long as they're all women. Apparently Belmont is not digging men right now, but if your party is all XX chromosomes, he'll come down and hang out. If a guy shows up it's back to one of his several hiding spots. Consequently, he wasn't super happy to see me.

Oh well, it's still great progress, plus we now know it takes him about 2 weeks to adjust to a new home. We're so happy he has a place to stay for now that allows him the full range of experiences most cats take for granted. At our house he couldn't be out with the other cats so he never got to sleep in bed with us, or sit on the couch. Now he gets to do it all!

Geoffrey found that F. Scott and Zelda were buried in nearby Rockville. We had some time to kill, so we took the metro out and grabbed a few shots. Does anyone know why there are pennies on the tombstone? I am easily amused by signs that could be read as imperatives - "Kiss and Ride - NOW!"

November 1st is Día de Todos Los Santos (All Saints Day). We don't have quite the same celebrations and customs for this and Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead / All Souls' Day), which is on November 2nd, as they do in Mexico, but it's traditional in the Canary Islands on these days, for people to visit cemeteries, clean up graves and bring new flowers. There's usually at least one item in the local press or media every year saying how much flower sellers have raised the prices for the occasion.

La Laguna Ahora say that the occasion is much more than that though and suggest that it is also a perfect time to get together with the family and enjoy some typical sweetmeats. (Hey, any day is perfect for that in my book.) One of their recommendations is aptly named Huesos de santo (Saint's Bones) - a marzipan confection with gooey stuff in the middle, normally associated with Christmas - and those of you who speak Spanish can enjoy the recipes for these Postres para Todos los Santos.
