Visuland: www.visuland.com/

"Visuland is a virtual world with real voice communication, YouTube

video canvas, games and presentation tools. You can meet with people,

talk with them while showing a video, or your photo gallery or keep a

power point presentation. You can even learn languages by talking

people of the choosen language with real voice in a virtual pub."

Sounds wonderful, doesn't? Gorgeous virtual world, web browser-based,

suitable for social or professional meetings. Hmmmm. Next piece - what

is the tech like?

"Beside the rich functionality (real voice chat, showing videos,

photos, presentation tools, games) there is no need of long

downloading, installation or registration. Just a click to "Run", and

in a few seconds You're there to talk, play games and make friends."

Sounds great, so I try it out. Register. It insists on my gender. OK,

fine, be that way. I'm used to Second Life where I can be anything.

Then I do what they say, click to run, choose a location, and away I

go! Right? Wrong.

Requires Firefox extension.

My computer and Firefox have a ..., well, let's call it a cautious

truce most of the time. Installing extensions is like crossing the

neutral zone. Not pretty. It still sounds really really interesting,

so how about YOU check it out and tell me what you think!

A bit pricey for my tastes.

From the notecard:

"Welcome to Crucible / Templum

Everything changes.

These sims are run on donations. There is no retail. I like to think that makes this build special for visitors. As of now, we need the donations to pay the tiers here. When they do not , I shall be forced to close the sims permanently. I have maintained these sims for public use for over a year now. It costs $20.00 U.S. a day to keep this build open. I cannot do that any longer.

There are donation prims in different areas around the Sims. Please donate if you can.

Thank you,

Right there, right...down...there.

You are my sun and moon.

Welcome to the sinful street.

Where pleasures await in every person you meet.

Open your mind and your desires flow.

Let go of your sorrows, let go of your woes.

Darkness envelops you and you know you are home.

Love is fleeting, but we won't leave you to be alone.

Welcome to The Red Light District.

Sometimes you just have to take a break. I'm just lying here in the sun, thinking what VW's mean for the environment. Sure, those computers churn out a lot of carbon, but manufacturers are beginning to show a response to customer concerns. Is it possible that replicating nature in SL will help us to appreciate it? Will the ability to buy silly things made of pixels stop us from buying silly things that pollute our environment? Maybe. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
