Escola de samba is a type of popular association that is characterized by singing and dancing to samba, almost always with competitive intent. Being a type of association originating in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the samba schools perform in public shows, in the form of a procession, where they represent a plot , to the sound of a samba-enredo , accompanied by a battery; its components — which can be a few hundred or even thousands — wear costumes alluding to the proposed theme, with most of these parading on foot and a minority parading on 'cars', where papier-mâché sculptures are also placed, in addition to other props.

They are four sisters who came from Ibirataia, Bahia, Brazil, and had given this name 'Quarteto Em Cy' ('Cy Four'/'Four In Cy') by Vinícius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra because of their names: Cyva, Cynara, Cybele and Cylene.
Their current formation is: Cyva, Cynara, Keyla Fogaça and Corina Viana.
They also joined with MPB-4 to form 'Octeto' ('Octet').
When they presented themselves to USA, they were known as 'The Girls From Bahia'.
They started performing in 1959, appearing on local television in that year. Cyva, the leader of the group, then moved to Rio de Janeiro, and persuaded her three sisters to join her there. They then started to make regular appearances in the boates (small nightclubs) of Rio, particularly Bottle's bar and the legendary Zum-Zum, where they caught the attention of Vinicius de Moraes and other prominent figures of the bossa nova scene. Their first album was released in 1964, and was to be followed by regular releases up to the late '90s, at the frequency of one a year, and sometimes more. Connoisseurs of MPB and tropicalia have a particular regard for the first few years of their recording career, when they were signed to Brazil's most daring label, Elenco.
