Lontano dalla folla dei centri commerciali alla ricerca del regalo dell’ultimo momento, approfittando del meteo favorevole, quale luogo migliore della montagna per trascorrere una meravigliosa vigilia di Natale ?

Eve of Pentecost

This animal was kind enough to hang out while I walked 1/4 mile to my car to get the 400mm and then back.

Northern Hawk Owl scans for voles.

The vigil is yours to keep

Knights of old who take the vow

Gather before your Lord

But know that you will not be alone

Enter deep into the mystery

Of a lifetime of loyal service

Where my words are your bond

Steadfast unflinching and strong

My love will fuel your courage

My compassion temper your anger

This coming night you may falter

But your resolve will strengthen at my altar

Are you ready like those before you

To always walk in the light

Feel my presence within you

Steady like the beat of my heart

I wrote this poem when I was musing on the Knights Templar, and I wrote it at the same time as the poem called the Knights Templar, which you can find on my photo stream, or in the Grail Poems Album. I had thought that I would not be uploading any more work until after my Queen's State Funeral, on Monday. But something prompted me to change my mind, having seen the dedication of people filing past paying their respects at her lying in, and the guards, soldiers and others who have stood vigil.

Part of the initiation of a medieval knight was to undergo a night vigil, where he would contemplate the duties and responsibilities of knighthood. He had to do this standing or kneeling, and not fall asleep. The initiation to become a knight by this time had become an elaborate, mystical ceremony.

The dignity of the Queen's lying in has been a solemn occasion, and I would like to place this work up here in recognition of the respect that the public, the Royal Family and the organisers have shown, and also, for those who have been standing vigil for their Queen.

This image is the side chapel at St.Mary's in Eastbourne, Sussex, UK. The stained glass depicts the Archangel St.Michael, and he would certainly help a young knight find his courage.

my mom died at 2am saturday. i took this photograph five hours later. it reminds me of the vigil we kept for mom. on the hospice floor, we held a 12-hour vigil. the last few hours, we literally encircled her with love—me lying in bed with mom, hand on her heart; my sister sitting by mom's side, stroking her forehead; dad, bowed forward, holding mom's feet; my other sister soothing dad's hands and my feet. it was a circle of love and awareness. she resisted for hours, but then died with some ease. it was difficult, but deeply important and valuable. i have no regrets.

my heart is filled with both love and sorrow. these are the raw places of which we don’t often speak. i’m vulnerable. my heart is cracked open—to the grief and to the beauty. this life is so very precious.

Long live the grunge! Additional texture by my3peas - thank you.

Towards the end of last year I scrambled Grindsbrook Clough, but took the eastern fork up (those who’ve scrambled the route will know where I mean). I found the flow towards the top too heavy to keep following the brook all the way up, so I took a near vertical climb out of a little side gulley.

Once I reached the top of the climb I emerged next to this scene, featuring some beautifully wind-sculpted gritstone formations and a great view of Grindslow Knoll. I took a shot just to remember the spot, the light being rather flat and the colours all blending into a non-descript grey/brown colour. Snow seems to be the answer to all my photography ills recently, this time around it’s helped to provide contrast in an otherwise flat scene. The foreground has popped out from the background and there’s now the three-dimensional depth that I always look for in my photography.

I don’t know if these formation has any kind of nickname ascribed to it (like the Kit Kat Stones of Higger Tor) but the two pillars in the left of frame look like two people stood watch over the across the clough below, so my own nickname for these will be the Vigil Stones.
