A Walk in the Mountains on the Border Line

View looking north from the top of St Mark's Bell Tower or Campanile di San Marco, in Venice. Located in St Mark's Square or Piazza San Marco it’s well worth the queue to see the views at the top.

Well, it took me 5-years to get 1-million views ( flic.kr/p/guDCtL ), and then a further 5-months to get another 1-million views.

I am absolutely over the moon.

I had been feeling very down just recently, so this is a great help! :o)

Thank you everyone!

Amazing...

Taken along the Mississippi River, near the Quad Cities. I hadn't seen an eagle for almost an hour, and the sun was going fast, so around 4:00PM I was packing up to leave when out of no where this guy flies in overhead. I hadn't put my camera up yet, so I was able to get off a few quick shots from the parking lot.

Somewhere north of Derby - Belper, I think. A grab shot from the car (no I wasn't driving at the time!). #13/31 for May one-a-day. (_5130048)

This one's for funkyuk, weektime-daytime resident of 1 London Wall on the right here and also for Dan K ™ who posted a view of this location in 1966 here

I took this after seeing a still from the film Blow-Up as posted by Dan K ™ - an ideal "Then and Now" location although you wouldn't know it looking at the difference here.

Opinion of the 1960's slabs on London Wall aside, one thing the development did have was a sense of continuity - there was a symmetry to the layout of the blocks down London wall and there was clearly a sense of 'flow' from one end to the other. The buildings looked very similar (the same), the highwalk joined them and the design of the whole road complemented the scheme...

... a bit like the Barbican next door - a giant Brutalist development which, love it or hate it, has a flow and continuity throughout which has been beautifully preserved.

Less so for London Wall... and a brief note on the fact that this is a dual carriageway which was the genesis of a large inner-ringroad scheme which, mercifully, never went any further than it does today.

Anyway - in contrast to the preservation of the Barbican London Wall has been butchered... many would say that the nail in the coffin was the construction of Alban Gate (aka 125 London Wall) above London Wall here which sits like giant homage to the late eighties corporate hugeness.

The building is actually two towers together and was built on the site of Lee House - the building peeping out on the right in the distance was built on the site of Royex House and is a much lauded building by Eric Parry.

I always find Alban Gate rather... 'lumpen'. It's all about hugeness and stainless steel and glass and giant steel rods which hold up the deck above London Wall and the Pizza Express - this deck is visible in the archway which, unfortunately, isn't open right to the top but is instead filled with a paved area and two (yes two) Pizza Express restaurants.

I'll defer rambling on about all the other buildings here as I don't want to bore the world to death just yet... in the meantime..

.. Enjoy

This is a photo of the same view as this painting on my relatives farm on the island of Rennesoy, off the coast of Stavanger, Norway. Alex, my mom, and I visited there in August, 2002. A cousin did the painting in the 40s. Not much has changed - just the colors on the one boathouse.
