Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today met with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law & Institutional Reform) of Malaysia, The Honorable Dato’ Sri Azalina Dato’ Othman Said, via videoconference, to discuss, among others, Malaysia’s initiative on international arbitration and third-party funding, in conjunction with Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.

Here, COSI demonstrator Patrick Roach leads sixth-grade students in Lewisburg, Tennessee, as they learn how changes in air pressure and temperature can affect the weather.
Students also took and used readings from barometers and thermometers to help them predict basic weather patterns. They explored air pressure using everyday objects and understood why changes in weather often occur around cold and warm fronts.
COSI's "Weather Watch" program includes a classroom kit for up to 30 students. Extra kits are available.

The Meeting exchanged views on the current global economic developments and their implications for regional economic integration. The Meeting reaffirmed a strong commitment to upholding a rules-based multilateral trading system, maintaining constructive engagements to address trade-related issues, and to de-escalate trade tensions. The Meeting also
discussed strategic measure to advance ASEAN-China economic cooperation with a view to fostering stronger economic relations.

Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, today attended the ASEAN Economic Ministers-Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Consultation. The Meeting exchanged views on the recent global economic turbulence, particularly in light of rising protectionism and its implications for global and regional trade, investment flows, and ASEAN and Japan economic integration agenda. Ministers also discussed ways to further strengthen ASEAN-Japan economic cooperation through enhanced trade and investment ties, as well as the promotion of innovation and sustainability-led initiatives.

English Language Fellow Laurie Hackett’s reach is broader than you might expect. In July, she trained 31 teachers representing more than 20 schools in the rural district Eden Karoo in South Africa – and she didn’t even have to leave her chair. Hackett recently conducted her first broadcast using Stellenbosch University’s Telematic Services technology. This platform integrates satellite, cellphone, web-based, and videoconference technology and can transmit to schools and learning centers throughout the entire country.
Her first broadcast focused on training in academic language development for science teachers. The event was the first of its kind for a Fellow in the Western Cape, and it represents a major success in using technology to reach geographically dispersed populations. “The satellite technology provides teachers in underserved areas with quality professional development opportunities. I can’t wait to come back and do it again next month,” Hackett said.
