Bother me tomorrow, today I'll buy no sorrows
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door.
Southwest Arizona, USA. View from the back porch.
Full frame. No crop. No post processing.
There seems to be magic in this record. The soft crackle of the needle hitting the vinyl transports me to another time and place. :)
Lyrics
Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with a baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave
White lightning, bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of every schoolgirl
"Love Me Tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
Every word of every song that he sang was for you
In a flash, he was gone, it happened so soon
What could you do?
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black
velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
If you please
If you please
If you please

Today, fellow Flickrite, Bob Dass arrived at the park to do some photography. He drove all the way from Ukiah just to do that. So, once again, I had motivation to do a bit of photography.
This thing still plays, and Bing Crosby was on the record.

2nd Note: if you decide to visit and go out into the water, piranhas lurk near the octopus so give that a berth unless you like to get eaten. Fair Warning.

One of the special things about Second Life is how much of it is really a giant collaboration with everyone taking part in Second Life.

Her Master's Voice is a take off on the old RCA Victor ad, shortly after the Victrola was invented nearly a century ago. I remember it well.......
I've posted the ad in the first comment for those who weren't around back then.

Johanna is enjoying her book while listening to music on the victrola. A relaxing way to spend the evening at home.

The victrola was a Salvation Army find a few months ago. I touched up the paint a little bit. The armchair was from another thrift store several years ago. I thought about recovering it (but I'm too lazy) and I'm glad I never did because it works here for an old parlor type setting.

His Master's Voice (HMV) was the name of a major British record label created in 1901 by The Gramophone Co. Ltd.[1] The phrase was coined in the late 1890s from the title of a painting by English artist Francis Barraud, which depicted a Jack Russell Terrier dog named Nipper listening to a wind-up disc gramophone and tilting his head. In the original, unmodified 1898 painting, the dog was listening to a cylinder phonograph. The painting was also famously used as the trademark and logo of the Victor Talking Machine Company, later known as RCA Victor. The painting was originally offered to James Hough, manager of Edison-Bell in London, but he declined, saying "dogs don't listen to phonographs".
Barraud subsequently went to The Gramophone Co. of Maiden Lane in London where the manager Barry Owen asked if the painting was for sale and if the painting could be revised to show one of their own latest Gramophone models. This was done and The Gramophone Co. in due course made a formal offer to buy the painting from Barraud for £100.
In the 1970s, an award was created which is a copy of the statue of the dog and gramophone, His Master's Voice, cloaked in bronze, and was presented by the record company (EMI) to artists, music producers and composers in recognition of selling more than 1,000,000 recordings.

This gentleman restores old gramophones at his workshop in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. And maybe the only person in the whole of the Bazaar that wasn't hustling to make a sale.
I love some of the cool minis I find on Etsy. Lins and I, both, have Victrola turn tables for our vinyls.

An iconic Victor Talking Machine. Made in 1921 by Victor Victrola Co. Taking us back in time to the "Roaring 20's" when jazz and big bands ruled. There's lots of jazz 78's for this wind up phonograph. It plays 78 RPM vinyl records. It isn't rare since about 185,000 were made. It was made before the company was bought by RCA, becoming RCA Victrola. This wind up phonograph plays surprisingly good music. #TimeMachine #VictorTalkingMachine #Victrola #78RPM #vinyl #HandCrank #WindUp

Such terms as graphophone, phonograph, victrola, "talking machine" and others were used to describe a mechanical gramophone record player.

She got a phonograph...
Now we played it on the sofa
We played it side the wall
My needles have got rusty
And it will not play at all
Beatrice I go crazy
Baby I will lose my mind
And I go crazeeeee
Honey I will lose my mind
Why dont-ya bring your clothes back home
And try me one more time

This is what has been taking up most of our time of late.
We are pulling out all the things we have stored over the years and are beginning to sell it off. A daunting task! This is a layered look at my dining room! LOL! The large stuff like beds, vanities, dressers, Victrolas, etc are stiil in the attic.
THE GAME: If you've followed me for a while now, you've seen my roving telephone booth (a red English type wood phone booth) that I place in different backgrounds. Well, it's in here if you care to try and find it! The color may have changed as not to stand out.
Have fun.
Some of us remember these. Do you? Located in the Vicksburg Depot Museum and Historical Village.
It's raining here so I thought this looked like a cozy thing to remember.
This will surely become black velvet ... ;-)

Come on, now! Everyone has tattoos...do you think you're so unique? Really? Go to Portland, Oregon, then, because there you look like the strange one if you don't have a tattoo! It's the modern age! It's 2017. Everyone has tattoos! It's not such a big deal anymore so you can stop taking photos of them like you're someone special.
Are you some sort of ink addict? Do you think your skin is actually a wall? Does it prove you can tolerate pain for longer periods, like you have some sort of tolerance or threshold others don't have?
Is it because you live in a society damaged and consumed with violence against women and this was a way to control your own pain? Is it because you see your identity not merely as a woman but as mobile force of art and creative consciousness in the world?
Or is it because you've been told since you could walk that a woman's beauty caps out at 21 so you remember looking in the mirror on your 21st birthday and coming to terms with the idea, "This is as good as it gets." For years, you obsessed over every hint of a wrinkle as you hit 30 and beyond-so much so that you feel now you didn't really enjoy being young. And now finally, FINALLY, you see your body as a work in progress instead of a work in depletion. You are the culmination of all the lyrics and literature quotes you love, of all of the images that define you and no one will be like you. The next time someone says you look like someone else, you'll just smile to yourself because this is now no longer actually possible. And, this is not as good as it gets. It gets better. It gets better...you're a mobile museum and every year is a visible mark you've approved of and made sense of. It's no longer possible to live in this world unmarked. It's no longer possible to live in this world unscathed. Take note, take note. You are a work in progress and not a body in decline. If anyone doesn't understand that, they can check out your skin.

No. 6 Record player, from April 2019.
I've been waiting for this single set for months. It's really cute, but so small. Definitely more toward 1/12 than 1/6. I have little developing collections of radios and record players/victrolas, so these will be great for those. Still would have liked them bigger.
Note: I measured the radio and it would be (in 1/6 scale) 3 inches tall and 6 inches wide....what?? In 1/12 it would be 6 inches tall and 12 inches wide.
Mohini and her new Asahi Pentax K1000 (her first film camera, yay!) and brand new Domke strap. Lattes and photos. A wonderful afternoon.

Building 17, RCA Victor Company, Camden Plant (also known as the Nipper Building) was constructed in 1909 for the Victor Talking Machine Company for the construction of victrola cabinets. It was designed by Ballinger & Perrot. The tower was noted for its four stained glass windows depicting Nipper the dog. These windows were removed by RCA when they did away with the victrola and dog as their trademark in 1969. The company replaced the windows in 1979, but by 1986 they had fallen into disrepair again. They were replaced again in 2003 when the building was converted into condominiums. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places #02001253 and also in the National Register listed Cooper-Grant historic district #87002229.

I don't know why I spent so much on my camera and lenses. By the time I'm finished cooking the photos in Photoshop, they might as well have been taken with a Kodak Instamatic.

Green Consolidated School, #99, Est. 1916
The last consolidated school in Barnes County, North Dakota
April 2022
"The school opened in September 1916. There were three on the faculty: E.L. Bow, the principal and teacher of 8th grade and all of high school; Clara Larsen, who taught the intermediate grades; and Amy Evenson, the primary grades teacher.
The total enrollment that first year was 79.
Because there was no teacherage, the principal, his wife and daughter lived in the school’s science room and library, and Miss Evenson lived in a classroom’s cloakroom; Miss Larsen lived at home.
Books, desks and two Victrolas were purchased from the schools which had closed for the merger. Aladdin lamps were used at first. A Delco light plant was installed later. The Rural Electrification Administration brought electricity to the school in 1939." (Article from "The Forum") - So there wasn't any electricity for awhile!
The high school closed in 1956, after this students finished out high school at other schools. The last student to graduate was in 1953, she was the only student in the class
