Running parallel to the QE2 bridge are the two original tunnels under the Thames. It used to be that one carried northbound traffic and the other southbound. In a situation where the bridge has to close, such as very bad weather, the tunnels revert back to one in each direction. The funnels opposite are ventilation shafts for the tunnels.
