PIONEERING AI INNOVATION: THE VIEW FROM CANADA
By 2030, artificial intelligence is expected to increase global GDP by 14%, making AI the biggest commercial opportunity in today’s economy. Canada is emerging as a global leader in this field; the government is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in AI and relaxing immigration rules to attract top talent in the sector. Startups and tech giants are taking notice and expanding their offices to the north. Where does Canada stand in the global AI race? A little mid-week power boost. Was trying my hand at creating a mascot for an event. Vector drawing using Inkpad.
Computer: Dell Latitude LS, manufactured 2000. Pentium3, 500MHz, 256mb RAM. 30mb HD — 12gb WinXP (C), 8gb NTFS storage (D), 9gb Vector Linux 7 Lite [6gb /root, 2gb /home, 1gb /swap]
That’s one way of keeping the old hardware in use. The notebook was given to me as a birthday gift in 2008 by a friend whose mother found three of these with plenty of accessories (including 3 dead batteries) in a storage closet at her work. It works great and I’ve taken it from Seattle to Phoenix on a road trip to post updates; WiFi is done through a PCMCIA card on the right side. Vector Linux 6 was on it until last night, when I updated it to 7 (which came out last month). 10+ years on a computer qualifies as “vintage” in Moore’s Law terms.
Words on the update: Slack-based Vector 7 Lite is described as “four distros in one” because at install it lets you choose Barebones, Light, Medium, and Full versions. With the limited amount of RAM my practical options were limited to the first two; with the package updater the latest version of Firefox was added and works. The learning curve on this version is that, as the installer says, it gets kinda geeky because you have the option of not setting up a /home or /swap to save space — but if you want them, you have to create them first. They’re a bit oblique on how to go about that but Slack has always assumed its users were not complete n00bs. So once I’d figured out what was expected and how, I got the OS installed then updated a few things manually (including twiddling with LILO.conf, since the installer doesn’t ask how many seconds delay you want or that you might want Windows to be the default), and all is good. Possibly a little sad that a clean install from disk was the only method, since most other distros can update the whole OS through a series of command lines or the package updater, but I don’t recall there being much crucial to lose… it was a good experience.
