This small building with a Greek cross plan, unusual in the Asturian architecture follows the traditional parameters: consists of five segments quadrilateral defined by arches that rest on a blind arcade that runs through the side walls, one of them, the largest, which forms the main nave. The floor is on two levels with the lower entrance from the altar. The dome type used is the barrel vault arches resting on reinforced on the outside by buttresses.

It comes with narthex and iconostasis, consisting of three stone arches resting on four capitals with their four marble columns closed by lattice cut in rectangular shape, which separates the chancel from the nave. I've done this location to death really, but the light was nice, and there was a brief moment when there was no-one in the way!

THE FLOODED CRYPT.

The basilica was built shortly after the mid-5th century by Bishop Neon, who dedicated it to the Holy Apostles. The original walls no longer exist, as the church was completely rebuilt in the 10th-11th centuries.

In 1261, the church was entrusted to the Conventual Friars, and from then on it took its current name. In 1321, Dante's funeral was held there, and he was buried near the church.

Visible through several openings, the crypt is constantly flooded; this phenomenon is due to the fact that it is below sea level and seepage over the centuries has allowed water to enter. Its floor is made from that of the ancient 5th-century building, so much so that some mosaic remains can be seen, including one bearing a Latin inscription on the tomb of the founder, Bishop Neon.

By enlarging the photo you can also see some fish swimming.

A chapel dedicated to St. Michael was probably built on the Treurenberg hill as early as the 9th century. In the 11th century it was replaced by a Romanesque church. In 1047, Lambert II, Count of Leuven founded a chapter in this church and organized the transportation of the relics of the martyr St. Gudula, housed before then in Saint Gaugericus Church on Saint-Géry Island. The patron saints of the church, St. Michael and St. Gudula, are also the patron saints of the city of Brussels.

In the thirteenth century, Henry I, Duke of Brabant ordered two round towers to be added to the church. Henry II, Duke of Brabant instructed the building of a Gothic collegiate church in 1226. The choir was constructed between 1226 and 1276. It took about 300 years to complete the entire church. It was completed just before the reign of the emperor Charles V commenced in 1519.

Haven't been able to spend much time on Flickr lately so apologies for not being able to visit your photostreams. School's started again and I'm faced with the problem of deciding what to write for my dissertation. One more week to the proposal deadline and I'm still clueless.

In Christiansborg Palace grounds, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Much of the interior of the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary the Virgin at Woodford in Northamptonshire dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Construction of the church dates originally from the 12th century. There was a restoration in the 19th century when the chancel was reconstructed.

This is Allhelgonakyrkan, a gothic revival church in Lund, located in southern Sweden. I recall having to wait out some kind of choir practice before taking my photos.

One of very rare moments or seconds to find the Antiquarium void of people.

This hall is the oldest room of the Residenz München. 66 metres long, it is the largest and most lavish Renaissance interior north of the Alps. Duke Albrecht V had it built from 1568 to 1571 for his collection of antique sculptures. These antiquities gave the room its name "Antiquarium".

From 1581 to 1600 Albrecht V's successors, Duke Wilhelm V and his son Maximilian I, transformed the Antiquarium into a banqueting hall. They lowered the floor, erected a dais with a balustrade at one end and installed a fireplace.

The wall and ceiling paintings in the Antiquarium date from its remodelling as a banqueting hall. The 16 pictures along the top of the vault are the work of the Munich court painter Peter Candid and show allegories of Fame and Virtue in the form of seated female figures.

The vaults above the windows, and the window jambs, are decorated with 102 views of towns, markets and palaces in what was then the Duchy of Bavaria. They are surrounded by grotesques, a type of ornament derived from classical antiquity. The busts and other sculptures displayed in the Antiquarium include both original works of classical antiquity and Renaissance copies. Some formed part of Duke Albrecht's collection; others were added in the 17th and 18th centuries

I know there are a great many historical churches in England but this one is very extraordinary and almost unique. The village of Lastingham is in the North York Moors National Park and its village church St Marys is itself very old. However it’s when you enter the church and go down the steep stone steps in the centre of the nave that you really begin to travel in time.

There are records that suggest a monastery was founded on this site in about AD650 . Around AD 725 the first stone church was built, and Cedd an important missionary from Lindisfarne human remains were reburied beside the altar. Stephen of Whitby refounded the Saxon monastery as a Benedictine house in 1078. Stephen built this present crypt over the place where Cedd was believed to have been buried. The crypt has been relatively unchanged for well over a thousand years.

I have not visited the Crypt for many years and it was a great pleasure to descend again into this remarkable space, which has a strange quality of calm.

I would agree with Simon Jenkins, author of England's Thousand Best Churches, when he calls the Norman crypt of St Mary's church in Lastingham 'one of England's special places'. He’s certainly right.

Technically the image is far from perfect I was balancing deep shadows a bright window and some strong LCD lights but I think you will get a sense of the place. In terms of size I would guess its about 100 meters long and 40 meters wide

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE A COMMENT IT’S MUCH APPRECIATED.
