l'empennage a souffert !!!

This beauty was a nice find. Was hoping I had something unusual but it's one of the very variable Oakleafs :)

Au petit matin, la buse variable.

Although classified in the family of Tanagers, this songbird forages more like a finch -- feeding mainly on grass seeds. Many subspecies exist that hybridize freely resulting in variable plumage. Seen at Gamboa town. Panama.

Variable Oysterling / crepidotus variabilis (?)

Pioneer Meadows, Derbyshire. 26/12/19.

I'm making the same educated guess as that made yesterday in naming these beauties ...

They were growing a little further down the dead twig as those I last posted. As before, the image shows a range of developmental stages within the cluster. The tiny white specks look to me like fruiting bodies that have just broken through the bark. Again, the largest mature specimen measured about 1.5cm at it's widest point and had the same attractive pinkish-brown gill pattern. I think they are exquisite natural wonders and well worth looking out for.

This bird was one of about twenty Oystercatchers - Black and Variable - who had gathered on the shores of the Pauatahanui Estuary.

To be honest, I'm not sure why they chose this very stony site to congregate in when there are sandier sites available to them. The stony foreshore was clearly hurting their feet; several of the birds seemed to be limping!
