Small seed-eating bird of humid tropical lowlands; fairly common. Found in grassy and weedy areas and forest edges, often in same places as slightly larger Thick-billed Seed-Finch. In pairs or small flocks, mixing readily with Morelet's Seedeaters and other seed-eating birds. Note stubby bill (unlike Thick-billed Seed-Finch) and plain brownish olive plumage of female (not rich brown like seed-finch). Males in Mexico and most of Central America are black. In southern Central America and South America males have variable amounts of white on the underparts and rump, hence the name.

The Variable Sandsnake (Sonora straminea) is another small fossorial that is active primarily in the late spring to early summer. These snakes have some of the most interesting features, but perhaps the head shape is the most unique.
This lovely Variable Sunbird was busy sucking nectar from the flowers on the lawns of Elsamere Nature Conservancy on the shores of Lake Naivasha.

I like the single eye photos I've seen from others - thanks for the inspiration. My eyes are mostly green, but look blue or brown or green depending on what I wear.
There is also a story about my eyes - I briefly lived in Waycross, Georgia, and one morning I was on the way to the Pic-N-Save to, well, pick up some items and save some money, and this woman standing in front of my neighbor's house across the street asked me if she could catch a ride. I told her sure, as I thought she was a friend of my neighbor (and this was almost 20 years ago).
Once in the car, she started flirting with me (I was pretty oblivious to it, but some of it sunk in) and she asked me if I'd take her to Alma, which is about 30 minutes away. I laughed at her and told her where I was going, and that was as far as I'd take her. She looked at me and said, "You got pretty eyes. You sure are mean, but you got them pretty eyes."
I found out later from my landlords that she was a prostitute, apparently one of the few in town, and they laughed and laughed about me (of all people) picking her up. And dropping her right back off on the street corner.
