Professional washermen at work during early morning in the ghat of Varanasi. Though washing of clothes is banned in the Ganga and the community has been provided alternate sites in Nadesar and some other areas by the municipality. The age old tradition is carried on regardless because there is religious merit in having clothes washed in the holy Ganges. Brahmins are still said to have their own washermen to avoid caste pollution.
Two fellow photographers (Mario and Chuck) were also shooting with me since very early morning, so just after this shoot we decided to disband and take a break for 30 mins. I sat down in a place not far from here to grab a quick bite while plugging in to my iPod Touch to listen to the Grammy winning piece from the album 'A Meeting by the River' by Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. One can listen to the same by clicking on the link HERE.
