The Sanskrit terms sādhu ("good man") and sādhvī ("good woman") refer to renouncers who have chosen to live a life apart from or on the edges of society to focus on their own spiritual practice.

The words come from the root sādh, which means "reach one's goal", "make straight", or "gain power over". The same root is used in the word sādhanā, which means "spiritual practice

Aarti is said to have descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals, or homa. The word may also refer to the traditional Hindu devotional song that is sung during the ritual. Aarti is performed and sung to develop the highest love for God. "Aa" means "towards or to", and "rati" means "right or virtue" in Sanskrit.

This shot was taken in Varanasi(2016) at sunrise, where people take a boat ride in the holy Ganges river. The whole place was fogged up, and which made this image unique.

I'm so pumped to revisit Varanasi in 2019😍

Overflowing with devotees that come to offer their prayers day and night, the Prayag Ghat is a significant ghat in Varanasi. Located on the immediate left of the Dashashwamedh Ghat, it was built by Balaji Bajirao in 1778 and is a replica of the Prayag holy city in Allahabad. Fortune tellers, seated under rattan umbrellas, read fortunes for the visiting pilgrims.

Ghats are a series of steps leading down to a body of water, made to use in low or high waters, and usually found at holy rivers. At Varanasi these steps lead to the Holi Ganges.

This photo is smoke filled from the fires that are burned day and night for holi cremations.

As the golden sun rises over the ancient ghats of Varanasi, the Ganga awakens with light, life, and timeless energy. From the handboat, every reflection tells a story — of devotion, tradition, and the eternal bond between the river and the city. Captured with Nikon Z50 during the magical golden hour.

This young Vedha student was not comfortable to pose. He replied with a smile every time I ask him to pose.

I then moved away from the subject of photography and started discussing on his age, family and his hobbies and finally made his sit on these ghats and just asked him for best expression and there came is contagious smile.

📍Varanasi, Incredible India

varanasi - banaras - kasi

It is one of the oldest ghats in Varanasi and is much revered in Hindu religion. When Mata Sati (Aadi shakti mata) sacrificed her life and set her body ablaze after Raja Daksh Prajapati (one of the sons of Lord Brahma) tried to humiliate Lord shiva in a Yagya. Lord Shiva took her burning body to the Himalaya. While going to the Himalaya Mata Sati's parts of body started falling on earth. Lord Shiva established Shakti Peeth wherever Sati's body had fallen. At Manikarnika ghat, Mata Sati's Ear's ornament had fallen.Manikarnika Ghat is the primary cremation ghat in Varanasi. The temple on the right side of the pic is the main Sati temple.Boating, Varanasi, dusk.
