On the 15th December 2010, they killed-off the Harrier to save less than £1bn. This year the UK government has already spend more than £300bn fighting COVID-19. That’s more money per day on COVID-19 than the entire savings from retiring the Harrier force.
Barton Hill depot in Bristol will be the temporary home for 20901 and 20905 for the next 5 weeks whilst they undergo a repaint into Balfour Beatty livery.
The depot opened in 1840 as a locomotive depot until 1870 when it became a carriage and wagon servicing facility.
I remember it being the home of the Blue Pullman in the early 70s. It was used by RES for a little bit in the mid 90s and went into Arriva ownership in 2011.
Its great to see some locomotives from the 1960s in a depot building dating back to the 1840s.

La Avenida de los Baobabs o Callejón de los Baobabs, es un grupo notable de baobabs de la especie Adansonia grandidieri que bordean un camino de tierra entre Morondava y Belon'i Tsiribihina en la región de Menabe, al oeste de Madagascar. Su sorprendente paisaje atrae a viajeros de todo el mundo, lo que lo convierte en uno de los lugares más visitados de la región. Ha sido un centro de esfuerzos locales de conservación. The Avenue of the Baobabs, or Alley of the Baobabs, is a prominent group of Grandidier's baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri) lining the unpaved Road No.8 between Morondava and Belon'i Tsiribihina in the Menabe region of western Madagascar. Its striking landscape draws travelers from around the world, making it one of the most visited locations in the region. It has been a center of local conservation efforts, and was granted temporary protected status in July 2007 by the Ministry of Environment, Water and e Forestry – a step toward making it Madagascar's first natural monument.
Along a 260 m (850 ft) stretch of the road is a grove of 20–25 Adansonia grandidieri baobabs. An additional 25 or so trees of this species are found growing over nearby rice paddies and meadows within 9.9 acres (4 ha) of land. The trees, which are endemic to Madagascar, are about 30 m (98 ft) in height.
The baobab trees, known locally as renala or reniala (from Malagasy reny ala "mother of the forest") are a legacy of the dense tropical forests that once thrived on Madagascar. The trees did not originally tower in isolation over the sere landscape of scrub, but stood in dense forest. Over the years, as the country's population grew, the forests were cleared for agriculture, leaving only the baobab trees, which the locals preserved as much for their own sake as for their value as a food source and building material.

A remarkable site for temporary ponds
The Tour du Valat Foundation is the owner of a 2560 ha estate made up of natural and agricultural lands, grazed by some 450 Camargue cattle and 80 Camargue horses. The natural zones form a mosaic of the emblematic and now rare habitats of the fluviolacustrine Camargue, the area at the interface between riverine and maritime influences.
These relatively non-saline habitats were largely destroyed in the past for the development of agriculture. The result is a natural heritage of exceptional value, adapted to the particular conditions of the area. Since July 2008, 1845 ha of the Estate (i.e., 72% of its total surface area) have been granted the protection status Réserve naturelle régionale or Regional Natural Reserve (RNR).
Of the many natural habitats that make up the site, the temporary ponds are among the most remarkable. Some of them (the least saline) are examples of a habitat of priority community interest under the European Habitats Directive, which are in sharp decline around the Mediterranean basin, Mediterranean Temporary Ponds (MTP)1. Such ponds cover a total surface area of 18.3 ha on the Tour du Valat Estate, i.e. 65% of all the MTPs in the Camargue.
In all, there are 65 ponds of various kinds on the Estate covering a total surface area of about 60 ha (their size is highly variable in function of water level). They vary considerably in size, shape, depth, level of isolation, and salinity, with consequent influences on the plant and animal communities that live in and around them.
In particular, there is a wide diversity of plant species, certain of which are highly threatened. Among the eleven protected species (four at national level, and seven at regional level) found in the Tour du Valat RNR, two are of major importance for conservation:
The Starfruit or Water star (Damasonium polyspermum) is an attractive little white-flowered annual plant, a member of the Alismataceae family. This Western Mediterranean endemic is typical of Mediterranean temporary ponds. Its world conservation status is listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and it is protected by ministerial decree in France, where it is present at some ten sites, including the Tour du Valat. In the RNR, it is found, sometimes in populations of several thousands, in six oligosaline (very slightly salty) ponds with a sunny exposition and scattered emergent vegetation; it emerges only when flooding conditions are favourable, i.e. when there is enough water in early spring.
Riella helicophylla is a small aquatic liverwort just a few centimetres in height. Endemic to the Mediterranean basin, it is listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive, and is currently being added to the list of French protected species. It is fond of distinctly saline, shallow, clear, temporary flood water, with limited plant cover. It was only recently discovered at the Tour du Valat (March 2012) in saline borrow pits and some low depressions in the flooded sansouïres bordering the Baisse Salée and the Saline ponds, covering at least 1.2 ha. Until then, it had only been found at one (former) site in the Hérault Department, and at Salin du Caban, east of
In terms of animals, the temporary ponds are also of primordial interest, for branchiopod crustaceans, odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), and amphibians. In wet springs, they literally teem with animals of kinds: from Triops cancriformis, a real living fossil, to the impressive tadpoles of the Common parsley frog or the Mediterranean/stripeless tree frog, and larvae of Zygoptera (damselflies, close relatives of the dragonflies). In this category, one of the commonest species in the Tour du Valat ponds, although highly threatened in France, is the Dark emerald damselfly or Dark spreadwing (Lestes macrostigma). This attractive damselfly, listed as Vulnerable in Europe by the IUCN, is only found in a few sites in France, along the Atlantic coast, in Corsica, and in the Camargue.
To conserve this natural heritage, it is necessary to maintain the natural hydrological regime of these ponds, characterised by their isolation and long completely parched periods in the summer. Their appearance thus varies immensely in function of precipitation level, ranging from bare cracked soil in late summer to vast flooded areas in wet springs, verdant and teeming with life.

Due to its strategic location, along the canal and in the immediate vicinity of the historic center of Brussels, the former Tour & Taxis railway site has enormous potential and is undergoing a real revival. The Royal Warehouse, the Stores and the Gare Maritime, three buildings of inestimable heritage value, are a key focus of this renewal.
The development of this 45 ha site, surrounded by dense and lively districts (the Maritime and Marie-Christine districts) was planned by a master plan, fed by participatory reflections. This was adopted by the Brussels-Capital Region in December 2008. It pays particular attention to green spaces, active mobility, diversity, enhancement of heritage and sustainable development.

La Fuentona es un manantial natural que da lugar al nacimiento del río Abión, en la provincia de Soria (comunidad de Castilla y León, España). El conjunto de la surgencia y su entorno natural fue declarado monumento natural el 12 de noviembre de 1998 mediante el decreto 238/1998.1 Está situado en los términos municipales de Cabrejas del Pinar y Muriel de la Fuente.
Las características especiales de este espacio natural que le confieren un valor diferencial y han hecho de él objeto de protección son:
Ejemplo de acuífero y surgencia acompañado de pequeñas fuentes dentro de un sistema hidrológico.
Conserva comunidades faunísticas de singular rareza, que constituyen inapreciables muestras de material genético en extremo peligro de desaparición.
Mantener unas formaciones geológicas y geomorfológicas propias, como son los sistemas y complejos kársticos, formando parte del más extenso de los existentes en su ámbito territorial.
El Monumento Natural de la Fuentona es uno de los seis monumentos naturales existentes en la Comunidad de Castilla y León. Se ubica en el término municipal de Cabrejas del Pinar, en las proximidades de Muriel de la Fuente, en la provincia de Soria.
Está constituido por un conjunto de barrancos y desfiladeros flanqueados por impresionantes formaciones rocosas de origen calizo y conformados en los alrededores del río Abión. El nacimiento de este río ocurre en el lugar conocido como “La Fuentona de Muriel”. Se trata de una surgencia de aguas subterráneas que después de recorrer multitud de cavidades rocosas salen al exterior para configurar en su recorrido multitud de rincones en los que la naturaleza se aprecia en toda su plenitud.
La Fuentona de Muriel, enclave principal del Monumento Natura, es el drenaje natural del acuífero de la Sierra de Cabrejas el cual está constituido por rocas kársticas en las que el agua a lo largo de los años ha creado infinidad de grutas y cavernas cubiertas de agua en todo o en parte.

The Fuentona Natural Monument is one of the six existing natural monuments in the Community of Castilla y León. It is located in the municipality of Cabrejas del Pinar, near Muriel de la Fuente, in the province of Soria.
It is made up of a set of ravines and gorges flanked by impressive limestone rock formations and formed around the Abión River. The source of this river occurs in the place known as “La Fuentona de Muriel”. It is about an upwelling of underground water that, after traveling through a multitude of rocky cavities, goes outside to configure a multitude of corners in which nature is appreciated in all its fullness.
The Fuentona de Muriel, the main enclave of the Natura Monument, is the natural drainage of the aquifer of the Sierra de Cabrejas which is made up of karst rocks in which the water over the years has created countless caves and caverns covered with water. in whole or in part.

Brief synthesis
Situated in North Yorkshire, the 18th century designed landscape of Studley Royal water garden and pleasure grounds, including the ruins of Fountains Abbey, is one harmonious whole of buildings, gardens and landscapes. This landscape of exceptional merit and beauty represents over 800 years of human ambition, design and achievement.
Studley Royal Park is one of the few great 18th century gardens to survive substantially in its original form, and is one of the most spectacular water gardens in England. The landscape garden is an outstanding example of the development of the ‘English’ garden style throughout the 18th century, which influenced the rest of Europe. With the integration of the River Skell into the water gardens and the use of ‘borrowed’ vistas from the surrounding countryside, the design and layout of the gardens is determined by the form of the natural landscape, rather than being imposed upon it. The garden contains canals, ponds, cascades, lawns and hedges, with elegant garden buildings, gateways and statues. The Aislabies’ vision survives substantially in its original form, most famously in the spectacular view of the ruins of Fountains Abbey itself.
Fountains Abbey ruins is not only a key eye catcher in the garden scheme, but is of outstanding importance in its own right, being one of the few Cistercian houses to survive from the 12th century and providing an unrivalled picture of a great religious house in all its parts.
The remainder of the estate is no less significant. At the west end of the estate is the transitional Elizabethan/Jacobean Fountains Hall, partially built from reclaimed abbey stone. With its distinctive Elizabethan façade enhanced by a formal garden with shaped hedges, it is an outstanding example of its period.
Located in the extensive deer park is St Mary’s Church, a masterpiece of High Victorian Gothic architecture, designed by William Burges in 1871 and considered to be one of his finest works.
Criterion (i): Studley Royal Park including the ruins of Fountains Abbey owes its originality and striking beauty to the fact that a humanised landscape was created around the largest medieval ruins in the United Kingdom. The use of these features, combined with the planning of the water garden itself, is a true masterpiece of human creative genius.
Criterion (iv): Combining the remains of the richest abbey in England, the Jacobean Fountains Hall, and Burges’s miniature neo-Gothic masterpiece of St Mary’s, with the water gardens and deer park into one harmonious whole, Studley Royal Park including the ruins of Fountains Abbey illustrates the power of medieval monasticism and the taste and wealth of the European upper classes in the 18th century.

When I took this photo it seemed as if the store might have closed, but I cannot confirm any such closure. This store is arguably an institution on Mission Street showing up on many photos I have come across...
