Fiacaill Ridge
Winter had been poor , no two ways about it, in fact more snow had probably fallen in March and April than in the previous 3 months…
Waking at the weekend to some glorious weather and I wangled an afternoon adventure. The majority of the prior week’s snow had fallen towards the Cairngorms so I made a bee line for the Northern Corries.
Parking up amongst the late season skiers, I headed off with the sun glasses on and headed straight towards the snowy hills. There was a slight breeze as I left the car but as the day went on this died down to leave near on perfect conditions. The footpaths were all busy but as I struck off towards the ridge that separates the two Norries, the footfall fell away, leaving me in my own company. The snow was soft lower down and the poles were useful if I found a deep hole between the rocks but as the ridge narrowed the crest was largely snow free and I was soon perched high above Coire an t-Sneachda , enjoying the fabulous position. Ahead was the Fiacaill Ridge and with crampons and ice axe packed I was unsure whether these would be required until I was virtually at the start of the climb! The snow was continuous and sloping into Coire an Lochan and if any of this continued onto the ridge then the winter tools were being taken out. However , sticking to the left of the ridge line the rock was dry and mostly snow free so I scrambled up the wonderfully sticky granite having a great time. All too soon and the fun was over as I crested the ridge onto the plateaux . There was no rush – another advantage of this time of year, and there were many hours until sunset.
I then ambled along the corries rim, chatting to climbs who had enjoyed some lovely conditions on some of the steeper routes in the Norries. The sun was beating down and all that was left to do was take a few snaps and try and avoid the ski runs as I headed back down Fiacaill a Choire Chais to the car. A superb afternoon

Ma femme et moi sommes enfin seuls ! Louis est parti à Nantes chez ses grand-parents qui ne l'avaient pas vu depuis belle lurette. Rose et Victor se sont envolés pour Pékin où ils sont hébergés pendant 2 semaines chez leur grande soeur Jessica. Une fois assuré de l'arrivée sans encombre des deux petits derniers, j'ai donc cherché où emmener ma belle et douce pour profiter au mieux de ces quelques précieux moments sans enfants.
Je me suis souvenu avoir passé un bon moment dans un hôtel au bord de la plage à Tunis (Gammarth) à l'occasion d'une conférence en 2008 et c'est donc là que nous nous sommes rendus du 16 au 21 juillet. Grâce au printemps arabe de 2010 (qui semble-t-il effraie toujours les touristes), j'ai pu réserver à la dernière minute et à moindre coût, et profiter d'une piscine et d'une plage très peu fréquentées. 32°C à notre arrivée, 42°C à notre départ. Calme, chaleur et pieds dans l'eau. Le bonheur !

Simnuke is the culmination of megatons of hard work by conscious fire artists who created a 1/10,000 scale of the infamous Trinity first nuclear test exactly 60 years to the minute. The simulation was created by the use of large fans fed with 400 gallons of pressurized biodiesel, going up in less than 30 seconds. Simnuke is meant as a reminder of the horrors of nuclear weapons, something that many of us don’t really think about anymore in this post-Cold War world, myself included. Considering that the Bush administration spends more on nukes now than we did on average during the Cold War and that we are minting new would-be terrorists daily with western actions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine it is a super important reality to keep in mind. OK, not exactly the middle of nowhere, but there is a lot of nothing on the way. So lets take 200 pictures of it! Driving on highways is normally fairly boring, but there were some surreal moments. Such as, the sun hugging the horizon, the fog bank, the great swamp. I found some really interesting places just by random chance of taking that particular exit. Oh, and I guess it was the week after Christmas too so there's a couple photos of that stuff.
