I have always had a pipe dream to have a campervan…. Days spent in the back of the car become crammed and uncomfortable and I dreamt of a day I could have some more comfort!
Anyway, my cousins rent out their campervan and very kindly loaned me it for a week . Superb – I had a bit of a bagging bug the last few weeks so decided as the forecast wasn’t great, that I would bag some of the remaining Corbetts I hadn’t done. Initially I was headed for the Loch Arkraig area, but for some reason or another (cant remember!) I decided to loiter just to the south and bag the Corbetts I hadn’t done in Ardgour, Moidart and Sunart! Excellent plan! Sunday afternoon was looking the best weather for the week so I decided to get the hardest hike done first that was Beinn Odhar Beag and Beinn Mhic Cedidh. As I started , things looked ok, but as I got higher I was soon in the clag and I wasn’t expecting much in the way of views .
However, just before I reached the top of the first Corbett , Beinn Odhar Beinn, the cloud blew away leaving tremendous views – I was a happy hiker. Next up was the long drop before heading up the steep grassy slopes of Beinn Mhic Cedidh. I was pretty tired after a busy weekend and the drive up etc etc but the change in in weather fortunes had put a stride in my step The views for the summit of Cedidh were grand with the Rois Bhienn circuit looking superb.
It was getting through into the evening now and the showers were starting to rattle through and I eventually finished the walk with a rather damp road walk back to the car! This is where the camper van came into its own – I popped the roof , got the heater on and had a cup of tea after changing in comfort to nice dry clothes
It was a relatively demanding round for an afternoon/evening but I was glad I had got these two in the bag ;)
Note – the next evening after summiting Beinn Resipol, I was flicking through my Corbett book and discovered I had already climbed these hills back in the winter of 2014!! Doh!!

Carn Liath Wild camp
In this spring and summer of rain and colder conditions , a few days opened up where a strong southerly air flow was providing us with a glimpse of what could be- a few days of temperatures over 16 degrees centigrade!!!
I suppose we cant have it all, after last years fabulous weather, we couldn’t possibly expect two years of good summery weather;)
With the forecast few days of good weather, I immediately started to think of a summit camp as I hadn’t done one since my camp in balmy conditions in February (in fact that weather spell had been more summery than most of the summer!!!). Having done numerous camps in Glencoe I decided I wanted something different and not too far away as time was short, so I decided on Carn Liath on the Beinn a’ Ghlo mountain range.
Leaving the car late into the afternoon I took a stroll up the short approach before starting the climb up Carn Liath. Path renovation work is currently being carried out to try and protect the mountain a little and I stopped for a while to chat to the workers putting this in place.
Further up the hill and the wind was whistling in from the south. It was certainly stronger than forecast I was a little apprehensive that it would be even stronger on the summit. However as I had been up here numerous time on day trips I was pretty sure I’d be able to find a sheltered spot somewhere close to the top.
Before long I was relieving my shoulders and dropping my rucksack at the summit cairn. The weather was good but the wind was still blowing so I set about looking for somewhere a little sheltered to pitch up. Luckily , just beyond the summit the lee of the slope gave me some shelter and I set camp.
With longer hours of day light I Ioitered around the summit taking photos and enjoying myself I was really hopeful for a nice sunset but around 8pm the cloud filled everything to grey rather appropriate for Carn Liath, the peak of the grey rock!
Disappointed at no glorious sunset, I retired to the tent, set the alarm for an hour before sunrise (early!) and caught a few hours sleep.
The disappointment of the prior evening was blown away (literally) the next morning as I was treated to a cracking sunrise The wind was still blowing but it was a warm wind so I was enjoying watch the skies turn from pink to orange and finally yellow and blue as the sun rose into the sky
A fabulous morning and I was on my way back to the car before 8am and home before 10am- a grand wee adventure and so glad I made the effort as the following months showed no signs of more summer weather!!

First trip to a Scottish Hidden Gem - before returning for a 3 day adventure with Thomas Heaton
A long weekend and the weather had been glorious, so I packed my gear (and kayak) and headed for the northwest highlands! I was due to be meeting up with Gerry to tackle Slioch via Kayak on the Monday so had the Corbett book out looking for some hills I had yet to climb. Immediately I was drawn to my remaining Applecross Hill – Bheinn Bhan….
I had always fancied climbing here and the hill looked good and the weather superb so I decided it was time to get this one in the bag! Unlike the other Corbett in Applecross , I decided not to cheat (joke!!) and started at sea level and the start of the famous Bealach na Ba road. Last time I had driven to 2000 feet and easily bagged Sgurr a’ Chaorachain (my wife even accompanied me some of the way on that trip!!). However starting 2000 foot further down the mountain meant today was going to be a tad more challenging! The weather was perfect or hiking – it was sunny, a little breeze and the temperature was reading about 14 degrees at sea level – not too warm (unlike my trip here the following week with Thomas Heaton)!
I set off along the well-constructed stalkers path and after a few kilometres soon branched off and started to head uphill headed for the small lochan. The views to this point were good with the Torridon hills starting to show themselves. However as I reached the lochan the true grandeur of this mountain revealed itself! Similar to Ben Nevis , one side of this hill slopes gently down to sea level, whilst its eastern side holds some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland! I was blown away by the views and as I skirted the lochan I found a cracking private beach!! I was starting to hatch a plan for my adventure the following week !
From the lochan, I headed into the Corrie and to be honest I couldn’t see a weakness to get up the steep headwalls! However I kept the faith and soon started up a steep grass slope which eventually took me to the mountains magnificent plateaux. Some snow still held onto the Corrie rim and care was required to get past this, a slip here would have serious implications!
If I thought the views of the eastern cliffs were good, I was amazed to find the views from the plateaux were even better! The high mountains of the NW highlands lay before me and the crowning glory lay to my south west with the Isle of Skye and other islands of the inner Hebrides lying before me. The sun sparkled on The Minch and I was in heaven!!!
The breeze was lovely and I sat at the summit for a good while enjoying the views. Not wanting to leave , I eventually dragged myself away from the summit, but the walk back was just as good as the walk in. The views down the south of the hill were just as stunning!
Eventually I got back to the car and immediately started on my next adventure – The Bealach na Ba Road……. And a lovely picnic spot for some evening Tea
Note – the following week was glorious, and a bank holiday weekend. I chose this hill to go on a three day wild camping adventure with Thomas Heaton. If I was blown away by this mountain on this trip, it was about to get eclipsed a week later!

Summer holidays – fantastic!! I had managed to time mine just after the summer weather finished!! Spending the day with the kids, I was able t head for the hills once my better half had returned from work. With the nights drawing in a little, I couldn’t travel too far and decided I wanted to tackle Stuc a’ Chroin.
I have been up Ben Vorlich so many times, I decided that I would try and head for Stuc instead, but didn’t have time to combine them. I also decided that if time allowed, I would come back over Ben Our en route back to the car. The forecast was an improving one and I was hoping for a sunset summit on Stuc a Chroin, with fantastic vistas over the southern highlands!
Setting off and things looked promising and I strode up the familiar Vorlich path , almost missing the path for the Stuc! Met lots of people coming off Vorlich bu when on to the path for Stuc a Chroin, the numbers disappeared and I experienced some lovely solitude. Reaching the head of the Glen and te views opened up over he Trossachs, with some fantastic crepuscular rays over towards More and Binnein!
Stuc a’ Chroin was looking good too from here and I had a spring in my step
That spring was dampened slightly though as when I reached the bottom of he hill, the mist rolled in and the summit disappeared! My timing wasn’t so great this time and for the next hour or so I was looking at the inside of a cloud!! Reaching the top, I decided to linger to see if the cloud would dissipate…. It didn’t!! so I headed back down and due to the time spent praying at the top, my plans for Ben Our were postponed and I managed to get to the car just before a head torch was required! Much fun even though the summit views weren’t very good ….

A final few hours to kill before getting the last flight back to Aberdeen and I headed to a damp St Ninian Isle. TBH I hadnt been expecting much from Shetland , mainly due to my misconception that its landscapes were bleak, treeless, windswept moors - how wrong was I! As I made my way to the Isle a report came on the radio to ay Shetland had been voted the 6th best location to visit by lonely planet! After last night trip to The Lang Ayre and today's trip to St Ninians, I can see why - what a stunning landscape and definitely somewhere I I'll visit again (with more time!)
