India Day 9 - Khajuraho
The huge Hindu Temple to Vishnu at Khajuraho is nearly 1000 years old and covered in carvings
L'une des nombreuses statues en l'honneur de Vishnou qui entourent le temple , où encore dans les cours des temples et autour des petit temple et templions.
Vishnu Springs (vishnusprings.org) opened to the public for one day. After parking, it was about a half mile walk to the area of the 1890's resort town. The pathway went through a beautiful wooded forest.

Last light strikes Vishnu Temple just before full moon rises. Grand Canyon National Park. Another image as moon rises is below.
From the Wiki Page: "Vishnu Temple is named for Vishnu, the Hindu deity, redeemer of the universe. This toponym was applied in 1880 by Clarence Dutton who thought this mountain resembled an oriental pagoda, when he began the tradition of naming geographical features in the Grand Canyon after mythological deities."
I believe that is Humphreys Peak, a dormant volcano, way off in the distance, which is just north of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Vishvarupa or Vishwaroop is a term used within Hinduism to refer to: Vishvarupa, revealed by Vishnu in the Bhagavad Gita. Vishvarupa has innumerable forms, eyes, faces, mouths and arms. All creatures of the universe are part of him.
Here is a shot from my campsite on the tonto trail. A magnificent view of these temples. I went on a 6 day backpacking trip on the escalante route and almost made it to the Little Colorado River, but was turned around by the weather and lack of food. I started at Grandview and ended at Tanner.

Mortality and divinity are joined in this figure of a yoga master attaining an equivalence with the cosmos.
With its origins in India about 2,500 years ago, yoga developed philosophical elements both spiritual and secular, with ties to Hindu, Jain, Sufi and Buddhist traditions, in its goal of leading to spiritual transformation.

Beautiful sculpture of Varaha Avatar of Lord Vishnu-
Varaha is the third avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu in the form of a boar. When the demon Hiranyaksha stole the earth (personified as the goddess Bhudevi) and hid her in the primordial waters, Vishnu appeared as Varaha to rescue her. Varaha slew the demon and retrieved the Earth from the ocean, lifting it on his tusks, and restored Bhudevi to her place in the universe.
Varaha may be depicted completely as a boar or in an anthropomorphic form, with a boar's head and human body.

I made it to the heart of Ta Prohm, an undisturbed Bayon ruin out the outskirts of Angkor Wat. It was late in the day and there was a break in the afternoon summer showers.
To me, the best thing about these temples and ruins is that you can go anywhere, high or low, safe or not. There are hundreds of tiny nooks, old broken stone doors, lost hallways, and mysterious carvings peeking out of the overgrowth. There are no tort-related legal signs barring you from going anywhere... explorer beware. Besides, if you got injured, the jungle and insects would eat you alive before the night was over.
As soon as I walked into Ta Prohm, the thunder started rumbling around and dappled clouds rolled in. The thunder was extra eerie and chest-thumping inside all the mossy and vegetated old tombs. The rain started and stopped several times, so I would take refuge in crumbling crypts and hallways until the rain let up. I took some wrong turns, but I eventually ended up here with a break in the storm. I popped out with the 10 mm get this shot.
The temple was built in 1181 AD and was the home to 18 high priests, 615 dancers, and 12,500 people. I don't know why the dancer stats are so important, but there you go.

A strong row of Garudas hold centre stage on the outer wall of the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok.
Thailand is a Buddhist country but there are a lot of Hindu motifs abound in the architecture and culture of the kingdom.
Garuda is depicted as a bird, a raptor, with immense power and capable of violence and in Hinduism is regarded as the vehicle of Vishnu. Reference to Garuda abound in the early Hindu literature as well as in the epic Mahabharata.
In Buddhism, Garuda appears as an eagle form and Buddha is supposed to have intervened in the constant strife between the Eagles and the Serpents. What this mythological parable has to do with philosophical semblance of existence, I am afraid, I do not know.
What is captivating is the long row of identical Garudas that stretch along the side of the temple. It is difficult to get a shot without a human being in the frame as the number of visitors thronging the area is enormous. I was lucky.
This was shot handheld at f16 at 1/25 sec and thankfully the godly spirits and creatures were co operating to give a steady frame.

at Airavateswara temple, Darasuram,
This temple was constructed by the Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century AD.
This temple is a storehouse of art and architecture. The vimana is 85 feet high. The front mandapam itself is in the form of a huge chariot drawn by horses. The temple has some exquisite stone carvings.
The main deity's consort Periya Nayaki Amman temple is situated adjacent to Airavateshwarar temple.
