A little B&W processing with an artsy painterly touch

This image taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope revisits the Veil Nebula, which was featured in a previous Hubble image release. In this image, new processing techniques have been applied, bringing out fine details of the nebula’s delicate threads and filaments of ionized gas.

To create this colorful image, observations were taken by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 instrument using five different filters. The new post-processing methods have further enhanced details of emissions from doubly ionized oxygen (seen here in blues), ionized hydrogen, and ionized nitrogen (seen here in reds).

The Veil Nebula lies around 2,100 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Cygnus (the Swan), making it a relatively close neighbor in astronomical terms. Only a small portion of the nebula was captured in this image.

The Veil Nebula is the visible portion of the nearby Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant formed roughly 10,000 years ago by the death of a massive star. That star – which was 20 times the mass of the Sun – lived fast and died young, ending its life in a cataclysmic release of energy. Despite this stellar violence, the shockwaves and debris from the supernova sculpted the Veil Nebula’s delicate tracery of ionized gas – creating a scene of surprising astronomical beauty.

The Veil Nebula is also featured in Hubble’s Caldwell Catalog, a collection of astronomical objects that have been imaged by Hubble and are visible to amateur astronomers in the night sky.

2023-09-30, Day 4

A cluster of yellow, rain-soaked Snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae) brightens the descent along the North Twin River as the snow line hovers further up the ridge, Arc Dome Wilderness, Nevada.

Earlier in the morning and still above the snow line, we worked our way down the higher-elevation reaches of the watershed through a thick veil of fat, wet flakes. The intent had been to follow a trail for the entire trip, but for many miles time, debris flows, and the slow march of vegetation erased whatever route people might once have etched into the landscape.

The trail emerged again for a while where the valley was broadest, but the impact of Hurricane Hilary became increasingly evident as we entered the lower, more constricted reaches of the canyon. Debris flows created large swaths of unstable rock, mud, and roots that had to be negotiated, and the surging waters appeared to have angered the resident beaver population. The flooding must have caused some damage to their existing structures, and the industrious rodents had rebuilt with impressive speed, creating ponds that engulfed the route where the trail had once followed the bank. The water was deep enough that there was nothing for it but to push up and around through the tangled and often thorny undergrowth.

Downstream from the beaver ponds the full strength of the previous month’s flooding was revealed. It was clear that the stream had shifted back and forth at will, from channel to channel, and had moved immense amounts of material with its passage. The interlocking branches of overhanging trees created the impression of tunnels, which wove erratically, joining and then splitting once more with the whims of the flooding currents. Once when my friend looked up he noticed the cut end of a log several feet above our heads. Such cuts are usually made by trail crews to clear logs that would otherwise block foot traffic, so we surmised that the ground had once been 5-6 feet higher not long ago. Thinking about the impact of this single, significant storm, these arid landscapes must be relatively stable for long periods of time, punctuated by unpredictable episodes of rapid change.

Golden Hour Magic

The golden hour refers to the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is low on the horizon, casting a warm, diffused glow. Photographers love it because it enhances textures, adds depth, and reduces harsh shadows.

Virga Phenomenon

The trailing streaks from the cloud may be an example of virga – precipitation that evaporates before reaching the ground. It often creates a stunning visual of wispy curtains of rain illuminated by sunlight.

Altostratus Drama

The darker cloud formations could belong to the altostratus or cumulonimbus family. These mid- to high-level clouds often create dramatic contrasts when backlit by the setting sun.

Color Science

The intense orange and gold colors are due to Rayleigh scattering, where shorter blue wavelengths scatter out, leaving the longer red and orange wavelengths to dominate the sky during sunset.

Norwegian Coastal Influence

Being near the coast in Tønsberg, the humidity and varying air layers over land and sea can enhance atmospheric effects like this, creating more vivid skies and interesting cloud shapes.

The spectacular Bridal Veil Falls are the tallest free-falling falls in Colorado at 365 feet in height. It's located east of the town of Telluride, Colorado. At the very top is the Smuggler-Union Hydroelectric Power Plant and also know as the Bridal Veil Power Plant.

Hello Flickr Friends!!!!

How are you all doing? I trust that all is well.

Rob and I have been really enjoying married life so far. We've been hitched for 28 days now and its been all that I imagined it would be.

Waking up next to him every morning, going home with him every evening, cooking, cleaning, having unlimited time with each other... its a dream come true! Lol. I did a blog post on the wedding. Check it out. With pictures too: melissadionne.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/the-wedding-story/

Delicate in appearance, these filaments of shocked, glowing gas, draped in planet Earth's sky toward the constellation of Cygnus, make up the Veil Nebula. The nebula is a large supernova remnant, an expanding cloud born of the death explosion of a massive star. Light from the original supernova explosion likely reached Earth over 5,000 years ago

This is my friend Kate. She is currently in a competition to be the next Miss Universe New Zealand and then hopefully overall Miss Universe. Kate is one of the most driven people I know. She is constantly fund raising for charities and working in mens shelters. She seems to be doing bake sales every weekend. On top of this she has a law degree and a vigorous fitness regime its awe inspiring. I don't know how she does it. I'm just glad she likes my photography. On this day we went down to the local bulk buy savings store and grabbed a few meters of the blue material draped around her just as an artistic idea. Looks pretty cool aye. We ate fish n chips for lunch in the sun. What a bliss day. Good luck Kate. I hope you win your competition xxx.
