After Old Man River Falls our next stop was the B&B on Manitoulin Island The Carter House a brand new business right across the street from Bridal Veil Falls on the roadway leading into in Kagawong a village come Bay that is very quiet in the off tourist season. Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater Island in the world located on Lake Huron, its Ojibwe name Manidoowaaling means “spirit cave” the land area of the island is 2,766 km2 surprisingly it also contains three lakes which also have Islands.
Bridal Veil Falls is a busy spot all summer and into fall but if you like myself venture early morning you will find the place all to yourself, there is a car park on the main drag Highway 540 and several sets of metal stair offer great views from the top and on the way down depositing you quickly to this view. While not the greatest flow of the trip the amphitheater it is contained in makes up for it, the falls themselves are 11m high and fed from one of Manitoulin’s interior lakes appropriately called Lake Kagawong the walk along the river to the bay is worth the effort.
I took this on Sept 19, 2021 with my D850 and Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 Lens at 24mm, 15s, f11 ISO 64 processed in LR, PS +Topaz ,and DXO

Object: The Veil Nebula – Cygnus Loop SHO (2022)
The visual portion of the Cygnus Loop also known as the Veil Nebula, Cirrus Nebula or the Filamentary Nebula is located in the constellation Cygnus. The area includes the components:
-NGC6990 - “Western Veil" or "Witch's Broom",
-NGC6992 – NGC6995 – IC1340 - “Eastern Veil"
-Pickering's Wedge, or Pickering's Triangular Wisp.
The entire area is the remnant of a supernova explosion that occurred about 20.000 years ago and has been expanding ever since.
Distance from Earth: about 2400 light years

The history behind the name.
Back in 1951, a young French couple on honeymoon in Norway, drove off the road here. Somehow they failed to make the turn at the top of the falls and they both died after a free fall of almost 100 meters. One of the first rescue workers on the spot was my father and I know he struggled for many years afterwards, with nightmares after what he experienced here.
A memorial plate is placed at the bottom of the waterfall, where the date and name of the perished are engraved.
Portion of the Eastern Veil Nebula also known as Caldwell 33, whose brightest area is NGC6992.
The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus.
The Nebula was discovered on 1784 by William Herschel.
Given a distance of 2400 Light Years, this gives the radius of the entire nebula as 64 Light Years.
Undulations in the surface of the shell lead to multiple filamentary images, which appear to be intertwined.

Across the Agawa Canyon, the Bridal Veil Falls was a repeated source of inspiration for The Group of Seven. Several of the group: Lawren Harris, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frank Johnston, A.Y. Jackson and Arthur Lismer first painted in Algoma in May and September of 1918, travelling on the Algoma Central Rail, up into the remote Agawa Canyon, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Living out of a refurbished boxcar used as their base camp, they would paint for a month. Google: J.E.H. MacDonald, Algoma Waterfall

The leaves are hanging delicately down in the woodland like a flowing bridal veil in contrast with the trunks. I have manipulated this image to show the contrast.
When shooting a waterfalls, I often think of capturing it along with the surrounding area. Including its habitat so to speak. This image is exactly the opposite. Instead, now getting so close one might interpret the water as a kind of curtain or veil.
Chase Creek Falls continues to rush with water, but not quite as much as when we have rain. The Shuswap area is very dry and residents once again worry about fire, like those that divested the are one year ago.

I snapped this photo this morning in my backyard. I always look forward to seeing these flowers in the spring.
A silver mist lies softly over the pond,
hovering like a dream and blurring the edges of water and sky !!
In late October the winds blew in clouds over cougar ridge, to the west of the cabin. The sun had set behind the ridge and the clouds moved quickly. This long exposure photo shows their ominous character. Along the ridge the deciduous Larch trees (Tamarack) mixed in with evergreens had been a beautiful gold for a month but now were starting to shed showers of golden pine needles. Winter is coming soon...as much as I hate to leave it is time to take myself to another home.

The botanical garden of greenhouses, Auteuil.
Bridal Veil Waterfall located along the Pakoka river in the Waikato area, New Zealand. Waterfall is 55 m high and has over time caused the formation of a large pool at the base of the waterfall.
Bridal Veil Falls is a 365-foot waterfall at the end of the box canyon overlooking Telluride, Colorado. Hiking and off-road trails pass by the falls and it has a hydroelectric power plant at its top. In winter the frozen shape of the falls forms an imposing challenge to intrepid ice climbers.

Op 12 september 1976 was de laatste veildag in De Tuinbouw. De vaarveiling in Grootebroek was één van de 37 veilingen die in Noord-Holland groenten veilden. Op 13 september werd de veiling opgeheven, na 84 jaar te hebben bestaan. De exploitatie ging naar de nieuw opgerichte veiling WFO in Zwaagdijk.
Op het eiland stond het houten veilinggebouw dat in 1980 helaas door brand is verwoest.
Mijn interesse is meer voor de restanten nog altijd bestaande landtongen met daarop de restanten van de pilaren voor de overkappingen.
Wat precies op de landtongen gebeurde is een knap staaltje logistiek uit de tijd dat bijna alles nog per schuit en spoor ging.
De landtongen (ook wel kopsporen genoemd) vormden de schakel tussen h et water en het spoor. Dit was de plek waar de overslag plaatsvond:
- overslag van schuit naar spoor. De tuinders kwamen met hun houten schuiten vol bloemkool, aardappelen en uien door de invaarsloot aanvaren. De landtongen staken als vingers in het water, waardoor er tussen de tongen "haventjes" ontstonden waar de schuiten konden aanmeren.
- treinwagons op de tongen: Op elke landtong lag een spoorlijn waar goederenwagons van de NS klaarstonden. In totaal was er plek voor maar liefst 78 wagons (13 per tong).
- beschutting: De afdakken (de kappen) waren er om de producten en de arbeiders droog te houden tijdens het overladen. Niets was zo slecht voor de kwaliteit van de groenten als een flinke regenbui tijdens het sjouwen.
De landtongen waren verbonden met elkaar zodat arbeiders en controleurs zich snel tussen de verschillende sporen en schuiten konden verplaatsen.
De houten en later betonnen constructies van de overkappingen waren vaak aan elkaar gekoppeld voor extra stevigheid van het gehele complex.
Er zijn al 45 jaar plannen om de veiling te herbouwen. Plannen met de landtongen, plannen waarmee de verbinding tussen verleden en heden verdwijnt.
The old Horticulture auction house, what's left of it.
The last auction day at Horticulture was on September 12, 1976. The Horticulture auction house in Grootebroek was one of 37 auction houses that sold vegetables in North Holland. On September 13, the auction house was closed after 84 years. Its operations were transferred to the newly established WFO auction house in Zwaagdijk.
The wooden auction building, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1980, stood on the island.
I'm more interested in the remains of the headlands, which still stand today, with the remains of the pillars supporting the roofs.
What exactly happened on the headlands is a remarkable example of logistics from the time when almost everything was still transported by barge and rail.
The headlands (also called "kopsporen") formed the link between the water and the rail. This was where transshipment took place:
- transshipment from barge to rail. The market gardeners arrived with their wooden barges laden with cauliflower, potatoes, and onions through the inlet canal. The headlands extended like fingers into the water, creating small harbors between them where the barges could moor.
- Train wagons on the tongues: Each headland housed a railway line where NS freight wagons were waiting. There was room for a total of 78 wagons (13 per tongue).
- Shelter: The canopies (covers) were there to keep the produce and the workers dry during loading. Nothing was as detrimental to the quality of the vegetables as a heavy rain shower while they were being hauled.
The headlands were connected so that workers and inspectors could move quickly between the various tracks and barges.
The wooden, and later concrete, structures of the canopies were often interconnected for added strength.
Plans to rebuild the auction have been in place for 45 years. Plans with the headlands, plans that will erase the connection between past and present.

Cet opéra réalisé par Gottfried Semper brûla en 1869. L'actuel fut construit entre 1871 et 1878 par Manfred Semper sur les plans conçus par son père, l’architecte du premier opéra. Joyau baroque blotti le long des berges du fleuve d’Elbe, Dresde (Dresden), capitale de la Saxe, également nommée la « Florence de l’Elbe » pour sa riche collection d'oeuvres d'art et classée en 2004 (mais retirée en 2009 à cause de la construction d'un pont) au Patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco, est une cité monumentale où s’ordonnent avec grâce escaliers d’apparats, terrasses panoramiques et vastes places décorées de statues de saints et de monarques aux allures solennelles. La ville doit au duc Albert et à ses descendants qui en firent leur lieu de résidence à partir de 1485, d’être devenue l’une des plus belles villes d’Allemagne. Elle connut sa principale période de croissance au début du 18e siècle sous le règne d’Auguste le Fort, et nombre de ses monuments historiques datent de cette époque.
Presque entièrement rasée à la veille de la chute du Reich en 1945, Dresde vit une véritable renaissance : restaurations exemplaires des principaux monuments, réhabilitations réussies des édifices hérités de l’ex-RDA, centre historique rendu aux piétons…
