There's a special kind of magic that seems to happen when you stand behind a waterfall. With your feet on the narrow path, sheltered by the rocky outcropping overhead, suddenly you are looking out instead of in, feeling unseen as you observe the world beyond, through the misty veil cascading between you and it.
The rush and echo of the water as it drops 80 feet over the edge of a cliff drowns out all other sound, as if in that moment, all that exists is you and this enchanted space.

The history behind the name.
Back in 1951, a young French couple on honeymoon in Norway, drove off the road here. Somehow they failed to make the turn at the top of the falls and they both died after a free fall of almost 100 meters. One of the first rescue workers on the spot was my father and I know he struggled for many years afterwards, with nightmares after what he experienced here.
A memorial plate is placed at the bottom of the waterfall, where the date and name of the perished are engraved.

What lies beyond the green veil! Tune in to find out... I did poke the lens through this wonderful green curtain and take a shot of the tree lurking in the misty background, maybe tomorrow... I also got very wet from the mist dripping off the leaves :)
It shrouds Mont Blanc or it cuts it in half.... happy Easter. It's a capture from the skiing holidays in February, I thought I'd post something other than flowers for (an early ) Easter Sunday!
That wispy cloud hovered for an age just left of Mont Blanc, I was at the point of putting the camera away for the night when it just suddenly but gently seemed to throw itself as a veil over the mountain, the shadow intersecting the mountain
Hear my promise of blistering light
Sowing the rose of obsidian
My dear I promise
Death comes to all
In a heartbeat only silence
Let's play with the fire that runs in our veins
Trust in the might of a miracle
Now winter has come a
And I'll stand in the snow
I don't feel the cold
And it's all that I will ever need to believe
One day I know
We will meet again
In the shade of a life to die for
Watching the world
Through the eyes of a child
In elysium
Will I know you then?
(Will I know you then?)
Now bring down your fortress
And swallow your pride
Don't break in your moments of ignorance
Existence will capture a spark of life
Just a fragment
But it's all that I will ever need to revive
One day I know
We will meet again
In the shade of a life to die for
Watching the world
Through the eyes of a child
In elysium
Will I find you there in that darkness
Of the shadow that comes over all
Dear friend will I know you then
Will I know you then at all
Across the Agawa Canyon, the Bridal Veil Falls was a repeated source of inspiration for The Group of Seven. Several of the group: Lawren Harris, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frank Johnston, A.Y. Jackson and Arthur Lismer first painted in Algoma in May and September of 1918, travelling on the Algoma Central Rail, up into the remote Agawa Canyon, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Living out of a refurbished boxcar used as their base camp, they would paint for a month. Google: J.E.H. MacDonald, Algoma Waterfall

Bridal Veil Falls is a beautiful plunge waterfall on New Zealand's north island, about an hour west of the town of Hamilton.
The Pakoka River drops over 55 metres into the pool below, before continuing down the valley.
When shooting a waterfalls, I often think of capturing it along with the surrounding area. Including its habitat so to speak. This image is exactly the opposite. Instead, now getting so close one might interpret the water as a kind of curtain or veil.
Chase Creek Falls continues to rush with water, but not quite as much as when we have rain. The Shuswap area is very dry and residents once again worry about fire, like those that divested the are one year ago.

The Island that keeps on giving.
This location was really supposed to be about the fishing huts but I kept being drawn by this view and the way the base of the mountains was concealed by the low lying mist in the distance then the distant lines of seaweed farms emerging from the mist, These were anchored I feel by the foreground poles.
I hope you enjoy viewing.

Bridal Veil Falls is a 365-foot waterfall at the end of the box canyon overlooking Telluride, Colorado. Hiking and off-road trails pass by the falls and it has a hydroelectric power plant at its top. In winter the frozen shape of the falls forms an imposing challenge to intrepid ice climbers.

The site where I camped at the weekend is an old farm and has a delightful walled garden. The owners allow people to pitch their tents there if they want a quieter spot away from others and don't mind a bit of distance to the amenities.
It's not hard to imagine it in it's glory days with fresh vegetables, attractive flowers and plants and at the top of the list, Pineapples which were considered an exotic delicacy and a proud achievement of the head gardener, especially given the climate of north Wales.
There are dooways which I've never seen beyond which I'm told, lead to outbuildings, greenhouses, the garden labourers humble dwellings, with some sited close to the boiler room which afforded them much needed heat through the winter. Another would lead to the head gardener's house.
John Tavener - The Protecting Veil
It's not hard either to imagine that these people from older times are still here lovingly tending their gardens.
I spotted this door as I walked around the garden at dusk, with the knots in the wood resemblng faces, and what looks like monk's habits. I've never noticed this before, but feel sure that I would have. Everything looks like it's how the wood has weathered naturally, and mysteriously.
