This statue, by Local Liverpool sculptor Tom Murphy commemorates Captain Noel Chavasse VC Bar, twice awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War - the first VC was awarded as he rescued over 20 men from no mans land under heavy fire and often only yards from enemy lines. The second was awarded posthumously when he continued to rescue and treat wounded soldiers even though he was already mortally wounded himself. He died on 4th August 1917 and is buried in Belgium. This statue also commemorates the lives of 15 other Liverpool born men awarded the VC.
