D10690. A Gloster Meteor and a De Havilland Vampire fly together at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow. The Meteor was the first British jet fighter and the first one flew in 1943; the Vampire followed a couple of years later entering service in 1945.
The pair flew together at the beginning of the flying display on the last day of the Airshow.

HMAS Vampire, 'Daring' Class Destroyer, 2,830 tons, built Cockatoo Island Naval Dockyard, completed 1959, at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney, 8 October 2023.
Originally identical to the RN's 'Daring' Class, 3 were built at the RAN Naval Dockyard, Cockatoo Island 1957-59 and a 4th cancelled whilst under construction.
Later, a RN 'Daring' was leased, then purchased, by the RN to replace one sunk. The two remaining RAN-built vessels were extensively rebuilt by the Williamstown Naval Dockyard in 1970-73 with new fore and aft superstructures incorporating funnels and a reconditioned armament. The result was a destroyer that was far better looking than the original RN-version whose stick-like funnels in my opinion ruined what would otherwise have been a fine looking design. What a shame the RN vessels weren't rebuilt likewise!
HMS Vampire was not decommissioned until 1986, although in her final years she had been relegated to a training ship..
On 14 July 1948, six Vampire F.3s of No. 54 Squadron RAF became the first jet aircraft to fly across the Atlantic Ocean when they arrived in Goose Bay, Labrador. They went via Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, Keflavik in Iceland and Bluie West 1, Greenland. From Goose Bay airfield they went on to Montreal (c. 3,000 mi/4,830 km) to start the RAF's annual goodwill tour of Canada and the US, where they gave formation aerobatic displays. At the same time USAF Colonel David C. Schilling led a group of F-80 Shooting Stars flying to Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base in Germany to relieve a unit based there. There were conflicting reports later regarding competition between the RAF and USAF to be the first to fly the Atlantic. One report said the USAF squadron delayed completion of its movement to allow the Vampires to be "the first jets across the Atlantic". Another said that the Vampire pilots celebrated "winning the race against the rival F-80s."
I really hate to tell all of you this but I can get really punchy when I don't sleep. Such was the case for Vampire Weekend, a band that is a little underwhelming to me but to which everyone acts like is a completely religious experience. Says I in the photopit, "What are we killing ourselves for? Are John Lennon and Jeff Buckley going to rise from the dead and do a duet with Leonard Cohen? I mean, seriously, this is just a pop band who totally doesn't live up to their cool name, right?" And that's why you should never stand next to me in a photopit when I haven't slept. Honestly!
I was about ready to rest when Cinchel came back home and played me something that was completely hilarious posted by Pitchfork that involves Tim Harrington and Kristen Schaal and vampires and because Vampire Weekend played Pfork, here you go people.

In the spring of 1970 I went to work as a "photo journalist" for one of those supermarket tabloids. (You know, the only place you ever see them in check-out line at the grocery store.) My intention had been just to stay on for a month or so to get the extra money I needed to take the summer off & travel the UK. Now, it was 8 months later, and I was freezing my ass off in a London cemetery...in the rain! Oh, and I was still working for said tabloid which actually turned out to be a good thing because they were footing the bill for my trip. You might be wondering what I was doing in the rain in a London cemetery-Highgate Cemetery to be precise. I was trying to get photographic evidence of the infamous Highgate Vampire, of course. This was the third & last night of my stake-out.It had rained the previous nights, as well.I had taken plenty of interesting photos of crypts, stray cats and school children dressed as ghouls, but not a single vampire. I was about to give up & head back to my hotel when I heard footsteps on the path behind me.I waited silently until they were almost upon me then I turned, aimed my camera in the direction of the noise and took a picture- with full flash! The next thing I heard was a shout & a thud. I quickly fished my flashlight out of my coat pocket and shown it at the path. There lay a man, (a living, breathing man, not a vampire), soaking wet, covered in mud and looking a bit cross with me. I ran over to help him up & in doing so, I slipped and fell into the mud beside him.. "Serves you right for nearly blinding me!" he said. I told him how sorry I was & how I had been looking for the Highgate vampire. That's when he made the mistake of calling me a silly American girl. I informed him that I'd rather be a silly American girl than a daft British boy & I grabbed a handful of mud & flung at him. It landed on his face. He did the same to me but his shot landed on the side of my head and dripped down my cheek. Suddenly we were both laughing hysterically and helping one another up. I apologized again & introduced myself. He said his name was Paul & I could earn his forgiveness by buying him a pint after we had cleaned up a bit. I agreed. A pint sounded pretty good to me, too. Before we left the cemetery I convinced Paul to let me take a picture of us covered in mud. We met up a couple hours later and spend a goodly amount of the night drinking beer & talking about music & cemeteries & other things we had in common. Days later when I developed the film I noticed something strange in that particular picture. Behind Paul & I, on the path I had caught a third figure. He was shockingly pale with glowing eyes. But that's a story for another day!
