Utrecht - Jawel! De eerste nachttrein is uit Nederland vertrokken. Al eerder dit jaar stickerde de NS twee Vectrons om voor deze dienst, die sindsdien vrijwel dagelijks dienst deden voor de IC Berlin. Nu de NightJet daadwerkelijk rijdt, zullen we deze fraaie locomotieven niet zonder meer terugzien voor de tandpastatube naar de Duitse hoofdstad. Met twee bestemmingen in Oostenrijk, de hoofdstad Wenen en de ski-hoofdstad Innsbruck is deze trein zeker een goede optie naar het oosten en zuiden van Europa. Vanuit Wenen zijn Budapest, Boekarest, Warschau en zelfs Kiev te bereiken. In Innsbruck kunnen reizigers makkelijk overstappen op diverse treinen richting Italië. We zien de fraaie nieuwe aanwinst in Utrecht Centraal, klaarstaan voor vertrek richting 's Hertogenbosch en Venlo. Een mooie ontwikkeling in het Nederlandse treinaanbod!
Utrecht in the Netherlands is the capital of the province of the same name. With in excess of 300,000 people it is also the most highly populated as well. Utrecht is a city with a rich history dating back as far as the Middle Ages. It is also home to the main offices of both the Catholic and Protestant faiths.
For many years Utrecht was viewed as the top city in all the Netherlands, later on replaced by none other than Amsterdam. Going back to its history, there is some question as to when there were first inhabitants in Utrecht. Some say it goes back to the Stone Age, earlier than 2000 BC. Utrecht was also home to legions of Roman soldiers and their families during the heyday of the Roman Empire.
Following waves of attacks from Germanic tribes the Romans eventually left Utrecht around the years 275-300. Throughout the centuries Utrecht was swarmed upon by a variety of religions, each trying to become the predominant one in the region. To say that Utrecht has its share of cathedrals, churches and religious headquarters is truly an understatement.
Hoog Catharijne is een grotendeels overdekt winkel-, kantoor- en woningcomplex, deels vallend in de binnenstad van de Nederlandse stad Utrecht. Het loopt vanaf het Stationsplein, naar het Vredenburg en biedt onderdak aan honderden winkels, zalen, kantoren en woningen.
Begin jaren '60 was de gemeente Utrecht op zoek naar uitbreidingsmogelijkheden van haar centrumgebied. Het city-gebied had slechts de helft van de oppervlakte ten opzichte van de gemiddelde vergelijkbare steden in binnen- en buitenland. Uitbreiding was gewenst en was, gezien vanuit de tijdgeest, mogelijk tussen het oude stadscentrum en het Centraal Station, waar relatief laagwaardige bebouwing aanwezig was.
In 1962 vroeg de gemeenteraad advies aan het bouwbedrijf Bredero over een mogelijke parkeergarage, grofweg op de plaats van het huidige busstation. Empeo, het adviesbureau van Bredero, presenteerde vervolgens een groot plan voor de bouw van een nieuw winkelcentrum met kantoren, woningen en parkeergarages. Het plan werd later bekend onder de naam Hoog Catharijne, een verwijzing naar het Catharijneveld, de oude naam van Vredenburg.
Op 24 september 1973 werd Hoog Catharijne officieel geopend door prinses Beatrix. Vlak na de bouw was Hoog Catharijne het grootste overdekte winkelcentrum van Europa.

This ancient and historic city houses many buildings going back to the early Middle Ages. One of the unique features of the city is the wharf system in its inner canals. Before the city was fully canalized, parts of the Rhine River flowed through the city center. Most prominent of the historic buildings is the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Martin, the construction of which lasted for almost 200 year, beginning in 1254.
Hoofdgebouw II (HGB II) is een rijksmonumentaal kantoorgebouw in de Nederlandse stad Utrecht. Het 19e-eeuwse kantoorgebouw is sinds de bouw in gebruik door spoorwegondernemingen.Het is in 1895 gebouwd in neorenaissancestijl naar een ontwerp van J.F. Klinkhamer. De opdrachtgever was de Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen die een tweede kantoorgebouw voor haar groeiende bedrijf nodig had. Naast dit pand was reeds in 1870 HGB I verrezen. Tussen beide gebouwen werd een luchtbrug aangebracht. De luchtbrug en voorgevel van HGB II zijn voorzien van beeldhouwwerken uit het Atelier Van den Bossche en Crevels. (Bron: Wikipedia)
De Rijks Hogere Burgerschool te Utrecht is een voormalige school in de Nederlandse stad Utrecht. Het schoolgebouw is gelegen aan de Kruisstraat, en het pand is een van de rijksmonumenten in Utrecht.De school is opgericht in 1866 als een van de eerste hogereburgerscholen, die na de Schoolwet van 1863 zijn opgericht.De school heeft voortbestaan tot 1968.Het gebouw is ontworpen door de architect Cornelis Vermeijs, die jaren directeur was van de gemeentewerken van Utrecht. Het oorspronkelijke ontwerp is uitgevoerd in een eclectische stijl, en de uitbreidingen in 1905 en 1910 aan de zuid- en achterzijde zijn in een hiermee verwante stijl uitgevoerd.
In the early 19th century, the role of Utrecht as a fortified town had become obsolete. The fortifications of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie were moved east of Utrecht. The town walls could now be demolished to allow for expansion. The moats remained intact and formed an important feature of the Zocher plantsoen, an English style landscape park that remains largely intact today. Growth of the city increased when, in 1843, a railway connecting Utrecht to Amsterdam was opened. After that, Utrecht gradually became the main hub of the Dutch railway network. With the industrial revolution finally gathering speed in the Netherlands and the ramparts taken down, Utrecht began to grow far beyond the medieval centre. In 1853, the Dutch government allowed the bishopric of Utrecht to be reinstated by Rome, and Utrecht became the centre of Dutch Catholicism once more. From the 1880s onward neighbourhoods such as Oudwijk, Wittevrouwen, Vogelenbuurt to the East, and Lombok to the West were developed. New middle class residential areas, such as Tuindorp and Oog in Al, were built in the 1920s and 1930s. During this period, several Jugendstil houses and office buildings were built, followed by Rietveld who built the Rietveld Schröder House (1924), and Dudok's construction of the city theater (1941).
During World War II, Utrecht was held by the Germans until the general German surrender of the Netherlands on 5 May 1945. British and Canadian troops that had surrounded the city entered it after that surrender, on 7 May 1945. After the end of World War II, the city has grown considerably when new neighbourhoods such as Overvecht, Kanaleneiland, Hoograven (nl) and Lunetten were built. Around 2000 the city the Leidsche Rijn housing area was developed as the next extension of the city to the west.
The area surrounding Utrecht Centraal railway station and the station itself were developed following modernist ideas of the 1960s, in a brutalist style. This led to the construction of the shopping mall Hoog Catharijne (nl), music centre Vredenburg (Hertzberger, 1979), and conversion of part of the ancient canal structure into a highway (Catherijnebaan). Protest against further modernisation of the city centre followed even before the last buildings were finalised. In the early 21st century the whole area is being redeveloped.

The Drift is a small canal in Utrecht. The stately houses to the left have their own bridge over the canal. Most of the buidlings are in use by the Universiteit Utrecht.
Utrecht’s canals and wharves form a true world attraction. No other city on the planet has as many pedestrian quayside paths. They were put there centuries ago to provide access to the cellars under buildings beside the canals. There are now restaurants and boutiques occupying many of these cellars. The wharves themselves are always busy and along the water are many good places to eat. It is also nice to see Utrecht from a completely different perspective. What about a short round trip in an excursion barge or canoe. Or even try a water bicycle! It provides a unique view of the city, its wharves, cellars and beautiful canalside buildings. For those who want a short break from walking through the buzzing city centre, they will find perfect peace in hidden courtyards, pretty parks and cloisters. The visitor comes upon them suddenly in unexpected corners in the middle of the city.
