Stadthuisbrug (bridge that serves as a town square) in central Utrecht.

Utrecht is an old city in the Netherlands that originated as a Roman castellum. It used to stand on the Rhine, which has since changed course. The main (or at least the most noticeable) architectural feature of the city center is the Dom Tower, seen here in the background. It used to be part of the main St. Martin's Cathedral. But now it stands detached, overshadowing the much diminished cathedral, since its nave collapsed in 1674.

She is a queen who defends her throne,

In the midst of chaos and confusion.

She rules her court with pride and power,

And watches over every scrap and clutter.

Some may find her unfamiliar or alienating,

But those who see her strutting through her courtyard,

Quickly realise her true glamour and charisma,

And that she is a queen, a queen of trash, like no other.

Not every sky will please every eye you can have a drama free day especially on days that have slow gray rain clouds with heavy belly’s, travel photographers have to adapt to the ever changing environment and try to squeeze whatever they can out of the scene presented knowing that they may never get the opportunity to shoot the location again.

Overcast diffused sky light Sometimes makes for a pleasing result depending on the subject matter you are showing, in this case it is complimenting the Oudegracht “Old Canal” in Utrecht.

The Oudegracht is a unique drop level canal that came to be from the practicality of flooding, the city’s original canals built in and around 1000 AD were lowered due to the fluctuations in water levels from the newly diverted Rhine and Vecht rivers flooding the streets at natures whim.

The Dutch being the ingenious water engineers that they are eliminated the source of water fluctuations with a dam around 1250 AD leaving canal level real estate high and dry and people began making use of the space for storage also for business and personal use which continues to this day.

Sometimes you have travel very far during very early hours to arrive where you want to capture the morning and sometimes you have to just stumble out of your hotel with a coffee in one hand and gear in the other.

Pictured here is a view of Janskerkhof one morning and my hotel was just up from the people standing on the right the NH Utrecht Centre, a great location, a great hotel and only 400m from the Dom Tower really very cozy.

This area to the right is home to the Janskerk (John’s Church) which has been around since 1054 it also holds one of the best plant markets in the city on Saturday

mornings it also doubles as a favorite spot for students to bike park every day.

Although most of what I post is from abroad, I frequently take pictures around home, but never have the time to show. This one here is close to home. In a city like Utrecht it is hard to imagine you can find these places, but it is one of its charmes. Rural impressions.

Thankfully the tourist hordes have not yet made Utrecht a lady of the evening like its cousin to the north and it still has a great cozy laid-back vibe to it that is reinforced with the humming energy of youth as it is also a major university town.

Travel photography has worked out well for me wandering with my lovely wife as she is a later riser than myself so crawling out of the sheets at 4:30am after carefully arranging my gear to slip out the door unnoticed is a very common occurrence and a great way to practice my hobby without infringing on her enjoyment of our vacations.

Pictured here is a street scene from my morning jaunts, this captures a permanent exhibit from the Utrecht Museum project 'Night Rules-Night Lines' the illuminated signs were derived from advertisements from the 1940’s and installed for the exhibit in 1991 this particular one is in a residential neighborhood and was so loved that the residents wanted it to remain after the exhibition.

Utrecht, Oudegracht

Utrecht is the capital and most populous city in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located in the eastern corner of the Randstad conurbation and is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands with a population of 330,772 in 2014.

Utrecht's ancient city centre features many buildings and structures several dating as far back as the High Middle Ages. It has been the religious centre of the Netherlands since the 8th century. It lost the status of prince-bishopric but remains the main religious center in the country. Utrecht was the most important city in the Netherlands until the Dutch Golden Age, when it was succeeded by Amsterdam as the country's cultural centre and most populous city.

Utrecht is host to Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands, as well as several other institutes for higher education. Due to its central position within the country, it is an important transport hub for both rail and road transport. It has the second highest number of cultural events in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. In 2012, Lonely Planet included Utrecht in the top 10 of the world’s unsung places.
