Happy weekend to all!

on explore march 6, 2009 #430

She sat alone behind the glass, mid-sentence, mid-thought — mid-something I’ll never fully know.

The gesture could’ve meant anything: surprise, a sudden memory, an unsent kiss. The moment was gone as quickly as it appeared, but for a fraction of a second, everything aligned — her gaze, the reflection, the pause in the air.

It’s not a sharp photo, technically. But that’s part of its truth. Some moments don’t come in focus — they arrive in a blur, in a rush, in the hush between words.

And sometimes, that’s when they feel most real.

Dear Lou

We learned so much

I realize we won't be able to talk for some time

and I understand that as I do you

the long distance thing was the hardest and we did as well as we could

we were together during a very tumultuous time in our lives

I will always have your back and be curious about you

about your career about your whereabouts

I wanted to do something with a telephone in it but we have the most boring cordless type. I had to look through our old stuff again. I did mention we were hoarders, right? Heh. This phone is pretty old but this time, I tried cleaning it (compared to my previous photo =D). I think the phone was still working but I got a little impatient cleaning it with just tissue; after a while I figure WATER. WOULD. DO. And it did worked--squeaky clean after but eternally damaged, scarred for life.

I know I'm not a very nice Flickr buddy lately. There's just a lot of things in my mind. I will catch up soon.xo

I couldn't resist this one. It's a fair bit further north than anywhere I've been in Norway, but still reminiscent of the towns with their essential ferry services that I remember from our trips 20-22 years ago.

Not as much Japanese stuff here as I thought there might be, but certainly a good European mixture. The Mk1 Cortina stands out as (probably) being the oldest, and is that a VW Thing/181 near the lorry? Bonus VW-Audi dealership too.

Took me a while to find this location, as the ferry terminal has been moved and this area is now pedestrianised: goo.gl/maps/rprDbHXVeghpTpHa8

Sorry, not much time for comments this morning but a lot to enjoy in these three cards.

Dear Matthew

I like you a lot I realize you're in a relationship

with someone right now and I respect that

I would like you to know that if you're ever single

in the future and you want to come visit me in california

I would be open to spending time with you and finding

out how old you were when you wrote your first song

1. I know the typo-thingy is a little over the top. I think I kinda got crazy. But I like it.

2. And yes, that's an old cassette player I found somewhere in the house. Hah. We're hoarders. Meh. And if it isn't obvious enough, I didn't bother cleaning it. Sorry if I'm grossing you out.

3. Tonight, I'm OK but not really. I'm happy but not quite.

Hi, hii!!

Remember my "text messages" series?

So I stumble upon this project called The Unsent Project today, which is a collection of text messages to first loves.

It's super interesting and you might find it fascinating too!

Also, I'm not really happy with this image but that's the best I can do for today. Somehow this week's photos are unfolding into a horror series.

I just proved to myself that the happier I am the darker my photos are.

Another Alfa 2600. I think just coincidence, from what I can make out of the plate it looks to be different to that seen on the Sea Palling card.

Unsent card published by unknown publisher, maybe Photo Precision Ltd, ref. PT19748.

I think it's my responsibility to remind you that, here in the fog, everything looks the same and all we have to keep us together are fingertips.

But I'll use mine to tap promises into your palms on every step, just in case you start to forget.

Back to the postcards again - new ones have continued to trickle in. This one very closely replicates the view of a previously uploaded card, see below.

An interesting variety of domestic and European cars here, with not a single Cortina to be seen. The Audi is notable, they were a much less common sight back then.....

The only plate I've been able to make out so far is MGY 695P on the Vauxhall Cavalier, a 1976 1600 GL which had its last tax disc cashed-in during September 1984.

Dear Marcus

you rocked my world you had a charismatic way

about you with the women and you got me

seriously thinking about spirituality and you wouldn't let me get away

with kicking my own ass

but I could never really feel

and it's kinda too bad because we could've had much more fun

Prolly the last photo for the series. :] And oh, if you are familiar with this photo already it's because it's an outtake from this. Sorry for the noise. :[

Anyhoots, I'm feeling particularly cheery today after 2-3 days of gloom. Boys are such asses sometimes. Heh.

Several good things on this one.

Happily photographer D. Noble looks to have ganed acces to one of the hotel rooms to get this shot.

The newest car I can see here is the blue Mk2 Cavalier at the end, which looks to be the post-1986 facelift model.

A number of the other cars in the middle look somewhat older, but most are 1970s models which made it into the '80s with facelifts of varying success.

Peugeot 505 looks like a sensible choice as a taxi. Is the dark blue car at the bottom also a 505?

A fantasic array of stuff to ponder here. A shame about the retouching on some of the cars, I doubt they'd have needed it.

The main ones that catch my eye are the Peugeot 604, Lancia Beta, Escort Ghia in Purple Velvet, Fiat Strada and Datsun 120Y.

The Fiesta Mk1 PBT 332T was a 1979 957cc L that only made it to 1987.

Dear Terrance

I love you muchly you've been nothing

but open hearted and emotionally available and supportive

and nurturing and consummately there for me

I kept drawing you in and pushing you away

I remember how beautiful it was to fall asleep on your couch

and cry in front of you for the first time

You were the best platform from which to jump beyond myself

what was wrong with me

I had a friend in college (hey stranger) who was absolutely in love with that song; and it wasn’t hard to understand why. I remember we would talk about it, write the lyrics to notebooks, pictures and restaurant napkins and think about our own Terrances and Marcuses. Until now, I am still in love with that song and it has inspired me to write some letters—the chickenshit that I am, most of them are unsent, too.

I've already uploaded a few Marlborough cards, this was a new one to me.

I like the contrast between the very new-looking Citroen CX in the foreground and the Mini on the right. I can't work out the bodystyle on the Moskvich, could it be the van?

It's interesting to compare this view with the slightly earlier version below. Regrettably we can't quite see the Herd and Leader premises which would have been on the right near the lamp post, but further down the road there's what appears to be a Shell sign (also just visible on the older card?).

Unsent card with handwritten date of July 25th 1980, published by ETW Dennis & Sons Ltd ref. M.2905.

I watch him through the café window like he's a painting in warm light. He doesn't know I'm here, sitting in my car with the engine off and the radio humming low.

He's scrolling through his phone, chin resting on his hand. The way people do when they're waiting for someone who might not come.

The barista moves behind him like a blur of motion, all urgency and closing-time energy. But this boy sits still in his orange sweater, holding space in a world that's always rushing somewhere else.

I think about the conversations happening through screens. The messages sent and unsent. The way we can be surrounded by light and warmth and still feel like we're waiting.

Maybe I should go inside. Order something. Sit at the table next to his.

But sometimes watching is enough. Sometimes the story is better from the outside looking in.

The city keeps moving around us both.

Definitely the most unexpected thing to see wearing an 'L' plate, I think it's a Panhard Dyna Z? I hadn't even thought about them being sold here.

The distinctive shop is still there, now selling bikes: goo.gl/maps/qesWVLbFMfFLqXqi7

The informative caption tells us Brockenhurst is "A delightful, old-world village situated in the heart of the New Forest, where it is quite usual to see ponies from the forest wandering the streets unmolested. The entrance to the beautiful Ornamental Drive is close by."

Unsent card published by J. Hammersley ref. JH 104.

A small selection from Burford, with a great variety on this one.

Not one but two Fiat Mirafioris. The 2-door looks like a slightly older model than the A-reg version parked on the right. A452 DPF was 1983 1600 CL that made it to 1995.

Back end of a TR7 just visible next to the Cortina estate on the left?

Unsent card published by Judges of Hastings, ref. C9608.

Another enjoyably busy scene. A slightly different attitude to Health & Safety back then, with people walking through the roadwaorks behind the Land Rover.

Is that a Citroen 2CV parked on the ker at the back?

Two BMC FGs, one from Initial Services as also seen in the next card along.

The Austin A35's LJT 797 registration is now on a 2013 SEAT.

The dairy sign on the building gable end on the right was still visible in 2018: goo.gl/maps/rSPVpjVCSZy4wYej6

Unsent card published by Photo Precision Ltd, ref. PT2244.

A good one here for anyone who likes Metros. Beige one in the foreground (complete with older style orange Disabled badge) appears to be an 'L', with a sporty MG version outside the Royal Lion Hotel, and another one up the road.

Looks like a Viva HB there too, which would have been getting rare by this time, and a Renault 18 with chrome bumpers.

A scene I know moderately well from driving through regularly in the '90s - the Royston-Baldock route was a useful way of avoiding as much of the M25 as possible.

The scene is quite heavily dominated by various cars from Ford, BL/BMC and Vauxhall, with a relatively low numer of imprted models for the time. The only ones immediately obvious to me are the Simca, Beetle and maybe a Citroen GS estate.

I don’t know if you remember me (I’m not sure why you would. I was that tiny moment in the middle of that one day when you thought there was no way you could possibly heal again), but I remember you.

I remember how your every breath was a cry for help amidst the ashes of hopes that had been poured into a flower mold so that they might be able to pass themselves off as something still alive and breathing.

I remember your voice too. Even though I would never hear it, my ears rang with your aching. And I saw you, dear one. Don't you understand that?

(You were beautiful even then.)

Dear [omissis],

...but I would never really feel relaxed and looked out for around you though

and that stopped us from going any further than we did

and it's kinda too bad because we could've had much more fun.

I've collected many, lots of postcards all around the world and these are the unsent cards.

Top one is from Pakistan, a street fortuneteller.

A link to the next card along, with it featuring a tractor in a less-than-rural location. A distinctive cab on this Ford model.

The only imported car immediately obvious to me is the Fiat 850 sandwiched between Minis in front of the lorry.

The ADO16 1100/1300 looks like it's a higher-spec model with its two-tone paint, maybe a Riley or Wolseley? There's also a full complement of Ford Anglias, with saloon, estate and van to be seen.

Looks like the parking area outside the bank on the right has recently been pedestrianised: goo.gl/maps/LGmooDVHM7gW1EAn9

There are several Iola Wagners in the time period that fits for this portrait. We'll probably never know which one she was.

This is an unsent divided postcard.

I like her kind looking, pretty face.

Found photograph in Vermont.

We're a little bit further down the road on this sister card to the next one along. I haven't played spot the difference with the buildings, but I can't immediately see any cars which are on both shots.

Looks like a policeman on the bike, looking very proper.

Subaru estate at the zebra crossing?

SIngle-digit plate on the Peugeot 305 estate, maybe WPT 7? If so that's now on a 2011 VW Touareg.

Unsent card published by Judges of Hastings, ref. C9607.

Amusingly crude editing of the photo with the "Exhibition Hall" billboards. I presume they didn't want the image to be dated by whatever was being advertised at the time.

The second of the four Rover SD1s looks to be a pre-facelift model. The Jaguar looks to be a Series 3 model, I don't think we're much later than 1979/80 looking at the other cars parked-up.

Is that a Moskvich behind the sign?

The Exhibition Centre was demolished in 2014-16, the Streetview image below shows the last time it was open for business: goo.gl/maps/NrFu9Wb9jLYkigHW6 The site still appears to be vacant.

Unsent card published by Coastal Colour Ltd, no reference.

Not so many cars visible on this older card, but pleasingly the garage can be seen behind the Land Rover and caravan making its way up the hill. It was a shell at this time, but by the time my grandparents took a similar photo in the '80s it had changed to BP (see below).
