Haiti Unity Wall Synopsis
Before starting my project about Haiti I did research into who it was that I was designing for. I found that many PSU students did not know much about the earthquake in Haiti but were interested in finding out more. Students at PSU also stated that they are more interested in passive types of information that they can choose to investigate. Knowing these things, I created the Haiti Unity Wall. My goal with this project was to engage PSU students in a creatively inspiring yet informative way.
To achieve this goal I designed a wall that was built of geologically significant bodies around Haiti. All of these pieces related to the earthquake and included the tectonic plates, the fault line, the aftershocks, and Haiti itself. The wall is a type of collage that mixes all of these elements together to show how delicate Haiti is and why it has been so devastated by this earthquake.
I believe that this project was successful because it is aesthetically pleasing and informative. There are three levels of information in the wall. The first is the geological information, which includes the map and mapping of the aftershocks. The second level draws from Haiti's culture through the use of colored patterns and the country's slogan "Unity Creates Strength". The third level is the facts about Haiti etched into the glass markers that make up the aftershock map. These levels of information allow for multiple reads and varying levels of involvement. Someone just passing by can learn something from the wall and someone who has time to stop and read it up close can learn even more.
