In 1871, honoring the unification of Germany, a big monument, named Niderwalddenkmal, was erected on a hill overlooking Rüdesheim and the Rhine Valley. The main structure is a 12.5.meter high statue representing Germania. Schiller's youngest doughter, Clara, served as model for the face of the statue.

We visited Le Locle on a Sunday and a local referendum took place. It was about uniting Le Locle with Les Brenets.
It seems that the green party, the socialists party and the partie ouvrier et populaire were recommding to vote for the combination of the two villages.
Result was finally that Le Locle and Les Brenets will become one community.

This is the interior of the Tongil (Unification) Class passenger car, seating 72.
Car 13101 was built in 1965, the first of a new design of passenger cars with weight reduced from 36 metric tons to 30 to save on fuel and energy costs. Also unlike earlier passenger cars, seats can be rotated in the direction of travel for improved comfort. In colder months, a boiler car attached to the train provided heat, but in the summer, the only means of cooling were open windows and overhead fans.
The Tongil represented express-class service, slotting below air-conditioned higher-level express trains but above the basic commuter train, the Bidulgwi (Dove) class.
Part of QMx's new Serenity: Unification War series, The ISV Cerberus is a Series 3 Firefly – just like Serenity – but with a military refit that made it one of the baddest ships ever to take up arms against the Alliance.
The Firefly Gunboat variant was the backbone of the Independents air and space forces during the Unification War, equally capable of taking on ground targets and capital ships. Inexpensive to operate and heavily armored, the gunboats gave the Independents an early advantage in the guerrilla battles that dominated the war.
For her debut, we see our "Big Dog" taking a much-deserved break, reinforcing an Independents encampment in one of the deserts on Persephone. Look closely and you can see some of her crew and Browncoat marines moving under her shadow. This poster is full of little details and surprises, from the tattered 12th Cavalry flag hanging from the side of a gun emplacement to the "Eat This Purple Bellies" scrawled on the sides of Cerberus' big missiles.

Victor Emmanuel was a strong military leader who's victories during the Italian Revolution (1815-1871) led to the unification of the many Italian states into one unified state, the Kingdom of Italy. He became the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century and held that title until his death in 1878.
Also known as the Altare della Patria, Altar of the Fatherland, the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II was built to honor him.
Standing 230 ft high and 443 ft wide, it occupies a large area of the Capitoline Hill. Designed in 1885, it was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1925. Designed in the Greco-Roman style, the monument was very controversial. Many ancient Roman structures and artifacts were destroyed to clear the way for construction. Made of the finest white Botticino marble from Brescia, Italy, the best sculptors were employed to execute the designs which include an impressive stairway leading through Corinthian columns, beautiful fountains, and statues.
Two bronze statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas are seen at the top (the goddess Victoria represents Victory, the quadrigas are chariots drawn by four horses abreast). Symbolizing "winged victory" the one on the right represents freedom, the one on the left unity.
At the foot of the of the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II is the Altare della Patria or Altar of the Motherland. It is the most famous part of the monument. In front of the statue of the goddess Roma is the Tomb of Italy's Unknown Soldier from WWI, completed in 1924. It is flanked by a two-man honor guard and highlighted by an eternal flame. The honor guard is present at all times.
There are two fountains - Le Fontaine dei Due Mari (The Fountains of the Two Seas). The fountain on the left represents the Addriatic, with the lion of San Marco. On the right is the Tyrrhenian, with the wolf of Rome and the siren Partenope, which symbolizes the city of Naples.

The Risorgimento is Italy's birth. This palazzo, the Palazzo Carignano, has a parliament hall that was built inside the old aristocratic dance hall to house the so-called Subalpine Parliament. Something like the birth place of the country. But yes, the lady has a plastic bag ready.

Daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who succeeded Oda Nobunaga, was well-known for his unification of Japan, helping to bring to an end the Sengoku, or Warring States period.
At the age of 50, he finally fathered his only son, Sutemaru, or Tsurumatsu. The little boy must have well-loved and anticipated, as the only heir of Toyotomi, meant to carry on his dynasty. Sadly, this small prince only lived just over two years, dying in September 1591. The beauty and richness of the Momoyama period are shown here, in these items a rich and all powerful warlord bestowed upon his son.
From the Tokyo National exhibit Masterpieces of the Zen Culture from Myoshinji, February 2009.
Sword with Kurikara Dragon
Owned by Toyotomi Sutemaru (1598-1591).
Warlord Gamo Ujisato (1556-95) sent this set as a celebration of birth gift to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, upon the birth of his first and only son, Sutemaru. The dragon king Kurikara appears in takamakie (raised makie) on pear-skin ground on the scabbard embellished with metal fittings of chrysanthemums and paulownia in high relief.
The blade was made by the master Naomuni of Ichimanji school in Bizen at the beginning of the Kamakura period.

The Manhattan Center has quite a history . I saw it across the street from the third floor of a Loew's movie theater on 34th Street (west of 8th avenue), took the picture, then looked it up.
The building was built in 1906 by Oscar Hammerstein as the Manhattan Opera Company. In 1911 the Shuberts bought it for vaudeville shows. In 1922 the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry bought it. In 1976 the Unification Church bought it - and Reverend Moon and his group still own it. Apparently the facilities are wonderful for studios, performance, and tv - it's been used for concerts (by The Grateful Dead and Leonard Bernstein, for example).

After the liberation of Greece and the establishment of the Greek State, the Ionian islands claimed their unification with Greece. Despite its strong objection, Britain together with France and Russia signed on June 5 1863, in London, the Treaty according to which Britain gave up its role as the power protecting the Ionian Islands. On May 21st 1864 the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece became official.

A map of Central Europe from the 1866 edition of Mitchell's New Intermediate Geography. Of special interest is the fact that Germany was not unified into a single country until 1871. The boundaries continued in flux for some time after this. (Sorry, but I don't know when it took its final form.)

1700 & 1720 S. Michigan
The residences at 1720 South Michigan are a dramatic unification of loft-like layout and luxury interior finishes. Each unit is a balance between the edgy urban den of a hard loft and the comfortable European sophistication of a contemporary condominium. While obviously a new construction, 1720 South Michigan incorporates clear influences of 1960s architecture. A concrete and steel framework forms the solid skeleton of this South Loop newbie, accented by floor-to-ceiling glass walls and balconies scaling the exterior facade. Very geometric in design, the uniform concrete lines are offset by several cylindrical structures grouped at the base of the building - a demonstration of modern motif meets traditional tower.
Inside 1720 South Michigan, natural light and exposed cement surfaces are dominating elements of design that flawlessly complement one another, pairing industrial chic aspects with welcoming sunlit living areas. Daylight pours in through the expanse of windows, warming the condos to create a comfy, inviting space. The private terraces are extensions of the interior living/dining room that allow residents to enjoy their own outdoor oasis.
The lobby is an introduction to the ultramodern living at 1720 South Michigan. A wall of glass surrounds the entryway with imported wood paneling and sleek steel partitions breaking up the large foyer. Polished, grey slate flooring brings the outdoors in, giving the room an organic streak shared throughout the condominium.
