Day 2

In UNICEF's effort to build back better the lives of Acehnese localized Integrated Health Centers were built through out the province under the Health Units program. Known as Posyandu Plus, the health centers provide pre-natal training, check ups and immunization for pregnant mothers as well as health services for children under five. Built upon a preexisting government program, the Posyandu Plus activities have built upon institutional knowledge for greater sustainability and effectiveness.

At the Posyandu Plus Ie Masen, in Banda Aceh the monthly children's chek up's were underway, involving children under the age of 5. Monitoring weight, height, and health of the children monthly helps in the long term development and well being while vitamin A drops and immunizations help keep the kids healthy. Along the way the mothers receive training and are given the opportunity to allow their children to socialize.

We interviewed Sanawiyah, 28, and her daughter Shafira, 10 months. Sanawiyah is a survivor of the tsunami and moved to the village of Ie Masen, Banda Aceh after her home was destroyed in tsunami. (after a two minute interview we realized she wasn't going to talk…but at least there is one nice moment where she is smiling)

Child Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting don’t just cause physical and emotional pain. The practices reflect the value of girls and women in society that have been passed from generation to generation. Such values in turn limit their contribution in society thereby sustaining the cycle of poverty.

The good news is that things are changing. In communities across Ethiopia more and more people are saying no to FGM/C, child marriage and other harmful traditional practices. But there is much more to do.

In July, 2014 at the Girl Summit in London, the Government of Ethiopia committed to achieving the total elimination of FGM/C and Child, Early and Forced Marriage by 2025 through a strategic, multi-sectorial, girl-centred and evidence-based approach.

On 25 June, 2015 the government of Ethiopia will host a national Girl summit to reiterate its commitment. The summit will provide an opportunity for key actors including girls to renew their vow to end the practices through concerted actions. We can end FGM and child marriage within a generation – but only if we work together. Let girls be girls.

The school has 515 boys and 334 girls. UNICEFs objective is to reach parity. The director told us that the enrollment of girls was improving as a result of the socialization campaigns carried out by the Education Department and UNICEF. This year 105 girls enrolled in the first year out of 230 first year students.

Fighting and displacement continue in eastern Congo, but increasingly alongside this we are setting up development projects in the more peaceful areas. One of our major concerns in such projects is whether we will be able to get the participation of the villagers. The UNICEF management team were therefore very curious to visit our water and sanitation project in Lukananda. Lukananda is a village in the health zone Nyangezi about forty minutes from Bukavu the capital of South Kivu. During the years of fighting the village had never been attacked and the inhabitants had never been displaced. UNICEF had done the project with the BDD the development organization of the diocese and the health department. The project was to build a pipe water system for three villages and improve the sanitation of the village. Sanitation was improved by building: more hygienic latrines with concrete slabs, pig pens to keep animal faeces out of the village and spreading health messages on the importance of cleanliness.

UNICEF provided the materials for the construction of the piped water system and the fountains the villagers provided the land and the labour. For the sanitation project we trained the health department facilitators and provided materials for the latrine slabs.

On 15 July, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Lionel "Leo" Messi (centre) greets children at the UNICEF office in Port-au-Prince, the capital. UNICEF Representative in Haiti Françoise Gruloos-Ackermans (left, in glasses) is beside him. The children, who have been living in tent camps since the earthquake, participate in recreation programmes managed by the Haitian Olympic Committee, with support from the Government, UNICEF and other partners. The programmes provide structured daily sports activities and psychosocial support for young people.

Christine the treasurer of the committee. After I had asked Christine all sorts of questions on how the well was managed, she politely asked me who I was as she had not seen me here before. I apologized for my lack of manners in not introducing myself.

Ituri is exceptional in that 60% of the district has access to water sources. The challenges is to ensure the sources stay clean. UNICEF, Solidarités and the community have worked together to build clean water sources.

The committee manages the source. Each family pays 50 congolese francs a month. The charge is voted upon by the community and the committee. The charge is calculated so that no family is excluded. The funds raised are used to pay for maintenance and improve the site. In this case the funds paid for a kilo and a half of nails, whilst the committee organized wood and rattan to screen the source from animals.

So far 109 out of 130 families have paid. The remaining 21 families have recently returned and the committee has decided that they do not need to pay until they have harvested their first crop.
