I understand perfectly, after all… Chicago only has had one clear and sunny day in the past 42.

I took out my Fujifilm Zoom Date 125EZ point and shoot. I’m always happy with what I get from this little camera. I bought it for maybe $20 used, maybe five years ago and sometimes the date shows as the LED notifications don’t work and I can’t tell where I’m at. But this time, no dates.

It's not fair.

She was the perfect girl. Straight A's, cheerleader, prom queen. Dating the cutest guy in school. The pretty girl everyone loved.

Except me. I hate her. With every fiber of my being, with every waking moment, I hate her. She had everything I wanted, I needed, to be happy. But I didn't have any of it. She had it all. So, she had to go. It was easy to do it. She was so easy to trick, to get up to the roof of the school. She didn't expect to take a dive off the edge, admittedly with my help. At first, they didn't believe that she took her own life. "She was so happy," they said. "She had no reason to jump," they said. They sure changed their tune when they found the note that she wrote. Well, I wrote it, but she would have written it. Such a turnout at her funeral. The church was standing room only. And there I was, standing at the back, doing my best to hide my smirk. They would have never invited me, so I snuck in. Nobody ever notices me, so it was easy. Nothing would pry the smile off of my face. I went home with a spring in my step. The queen is dead, long live the Queen.

I went to school the next day, but something was wrong. Everyone was still mourning her. Understandable, but I know nature abhors a vacuum. That hole she left would have to be filled, and surely I would be the best candidate. I just have to wait a little longer.

What is going on? It's like nothing's changed. Where's the admiration? The love? The attention she always got? I should have it now. But yet it's like I'm still invisible. I know what I have to do. Eliminating her wasn't enough, I have to wipe clean all traces of her.

It was easy to break into the school. Budget cuts have all but stopped any sort of maintenance and the locks are all broken. All I have to do is clear out all the awards that she won. It's hard to find my way in the darkness, my only source of light is the red glow of the exit signs. I opened the case and put my hand on the prom queen sash. Her sash. I prepared to rip it out of the case, throw it on the floor, stomp it into oblivion. But there was a noise behind me. I turned to see a figure standing behind me. No, standing wasn't the right term. Floating. It was her. Little Miss Perfect. Once again she ruins everything. I ran at her, screaming, my hands out just like they had been when I shoved her. But this time my hands went through her. She laughed, not her usual light, tinkling laugh, but gravelly, sinister. I looked up into her face. There was no more of that sweetness there. I only had time to breathe before her hands encircled my throat. I coughed, gagged, clawing at hands that weren't there. I closed my eyes, desperate to they to take a breath. When I opened them again, it was bright. We were up on the roof. The last thing I remembered was her giggle as I went plummeting off of the school roof.

By the early 90's (I think these are 1994 or1995) Dad was only photographing (using colour negs) at stations or nearby as his main interest had turned to Haulage. Also his notebooks from this period were not so substantial and have not survived. So no date for this shot of 37407 at Bangor having just run around and propelled its train into the tunnel and now running into the platform for its return journey to Crewe or Manchester.

The loco was new as D6605 to Canton in October 1965 and became 37305 under tops. The loco was withdrawn in March 2000 and initially preserved but was then bought by DRS, who will i understand be disposing of it soon.

Rosie is old enough now to understand and has some curiosity about what a camera is actually doing and how. I have found a good start is a medium format film camera. It actually a perfect teaching tool for a child. When I take it apart she is able to see that it's basically a hollow cube with a hole in the front that allows light to pass through and expose an emulsion covered film. Everything about it is big and sturdy, the film advance lever, the shutter release, the viewer so it's just right for a child to touch and explore it's mechanics without fear of breaking it. I saved some frames for her after shooting with the camera yesterday which gave her 5 shots. I think giving only 5 shots made her see how precious each shot is and it was interesting to see how much care she took in deciding how to use her limited number of film frames.

Daisy is understandably sensitive about her hair (or lack thereof...), and doesn't like me taking pictures before she has "wigged up" as it were. Hey, no prob baby....Madame Tina has found a solution. 😘

In fact I think she looks so good like this, that she has my permission to just leave her hair at home the next time we go out. Yeah....like that'll ever happen! 😲

The Selfish Giant, by Oscar Wilde

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.

It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. 'How happy we are here!' they cried to each other.

One day the Giant came back. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

'What are you doing here?' he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.

'My own garden is my own garden,' said the Giant; 'any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.' So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.

He was a very selfish Giant.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside.

'How happy we were there,' they said to each other.

Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still Winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. 'Spring has forgotten this garden,' they cried, 'so we will live here all the year round.' The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down. 'This is a delightful spot,' he said, 'we must ask the Hail on a visit.' So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go. He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.

'I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming,' said the Selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; 'I hope there will be a change in the weather.'

But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none. 'He is too selfish,' she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.

One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King's musicians passing by. It was really only a little linnet singing outside his window, but it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world. Then the Hail stopped dancing over his head, and the North Wind ceased roaring, and a delicious perfume came to him through the open casement. 'I believe the Spring has come at last,' said the Giant; and he jumped out of bed and looked out.

What did he see?

He saw a most wonderful sight. Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. In every tree that he could see there was a little child. And the trees were so glad to have the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms, and were waving their arms gently above the children's heads. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene, only in one corner it was still Winter. It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it was standing a little boy. He was so small that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly. The poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind was blowing and roaring above it. 'Climb up! little boy,' said the Tree, and it bent its branches down as low as it could; but the little boy was too tiny.

And the Giant's heart melted as he looked out. 'How selfish I have been!' he said; 'now I know why the Spring would not come here. I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children's playground for ever and ever.' He was really very sorry for what he had done.

So he crept downstairs and opened the front door quite softly, and went out into the garden. But when the children saw him they were so frightened that they all ran away, and the garden became Winter again. Only the little boy did not run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he died not see the Giant coming. And the Giant stole up behind him and took him gently in his hand, and put him up into the tree. And the tree broke at once into blossom, and the birds came and sang on it, and the little boy stretched out his two arms and flung them round the Giant's neck, and kissed him. And the other children, when they saw that the Giant was not wicked any longer, came running back, and with them came the Spring. 'It is your garden now, little children,' said the Giant, and he took a great axe and knocked down the wall. And when the people were gong to market at twelve o'clock they found the Giant playing with the children in the most beautiful garden they had ever seen.

All day long they played, and in the evening they came to the Giant to bid him good-bye.

'But where is your little companion?' he said: 'the boy I put into the tree.' The Giant loved him the best because he had kissed him.

'We don't know,' answered the children; 'he has gone away.'

'You must tell him to be sure and come here to-morrow,' said the Giant. But the children said that they did not know where he lived, and had never seen him before; and the Giant felt very sad.

Every afternoon, when school was over, the children came and played with the Giant. But the little boy whom the Giant loved was never seen again. The Giant was very kind to all the children, yet he longed for his first little friend, and often spoke of him. 'How I would like to see him!' he used to say.

Years went over, and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He could not play about any more, so he sat in a huge armchair, and watched the children at their games, and admired his garden. 'I have many beautiful flowers,' he said; 'but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all.'

One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep, and that the flowers were resting.

Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder, and looked and looked. It certainly was a marvellous sight. In the farthest corner of the garden was a tree quite covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden, and silver fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had loved.

Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy, and out into the garden. He hastened across the grass, and came near to the child. And when he came quite close his face grew red with anger, and he said, 'Who hath dared to wound thee?' For on the palms of the child's hands were the prints of two nails, and the prints of two nails were on the little feet.

'Who hath dared to wound thee?' cried the Giant; 'tell me, that I may take my big sword and slay him.'

'Nay!' answered the child; 'but these are the wounds of Love.'

'Who art thou?' said the Giant, and a strange awe fell on him, and he knelt before the little child.

And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him, 'You let me play once in your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.'

And when the children ran in that afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

Miles Davis sheet 1955 - 1976 .

I summarized the important times of Miles Davis. I wanted an easy-to-understand table.

I will continue to supplement it in the future. And if you fit your taste, I am very happy.

:)

1 This table is based on Miles Davis's Wikipedia. The reason is that I felt that this text was the basis.

2 The boot leg is therefore an addition to this table. In addition, the album where the soundtrack and Miles participated is not in the description.

3 The table is centered on 1955 to 1976. This reflects my hobbies.

4 This table may be revised in the future. I am also interested in the bootleg.

5 This table creates two versions: Japanese and English. In addition, three types of PDF, Excel, and Numbers are uploaded.

6 The color scheme in this table is based on Miles' album, “birth of cool”.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Miles Davis sheet 1955 - 1976 .( FUJIFILM GFX50R shot )

www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ja/about/president/b_message31_03.html

:)

I failed Biology. So it has been of interest for Danny Liv and myself to figure out how hazel trees produce hazel nuts (i.e. seeds) that could become young trees.

The basic answer is in this photo. Many of us are familiar with yellow catkins, seen here on the left of the photo and also in the background. These are male catkins that produce a heck of a lot of pollen. Try standing underneath and shaking the catkin and you'll see it on your clothes. That pollen is blown by the wind and with luck will find a female, seen here to the mid-right of the photo as a tiny, really tiny red flower. As I understand it, but don't forget I failed Biology, that pollination has to come from a different hazel tree. In other words, it is not as simple as transferring pollen from male to female as shown in this photo! Once that has happened, a nut / seed will develop. Then come autumn, perhaps a squirrel will take a nut and "squirrel it away" in the ground from which potentially a young sapling might grow,

I understand this charter was for the 125th anniversary of the Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre. It gives children from that county a chance to have a seaside break in the east coast town of Skegness where this rail tour was heading to. Hence the headboard DCHC Holiday Express. Lovely morning sunshine and what a lovely sound the Royal Scot made on the approach to Aslockton station. This shot was taken from the foot crossing east of the station which can be seen at the rear of the train. It was good to meet John Bagshaw at this spot today. I've removed three tall station lights that were pointing out of the middle coaches.

It's quite hard to understand the scale of the artwork that covers the inside of the Markthal in Rotterdam. This shot makes it particularly difficult given the lack of anything of a known scale but here the intention was to try and capture as much of it as possible in a single shot.

Click here to see more of my shots from Rotterdam :

From Wikipedia : "The Markthal (English: Market Hall) is a residential and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014, by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars.......

The inside of the building is adorned with an 11.000 m2 artwork by Arno Coenen, named Hoorn des Overvloeds (Horn of Plenty). The artwork shows strongly enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects.

The artwork of Coenen was selected out of 9 international candidates. The work was made using digital 3D-techniques. This enormous file of 1,47 terabytes needed special servers, these are also used by Pixar Studios for making animated movies. The digital 3D-animation was separated in 4000 pieces and then printed on perforated aluminum panels. The 4000 aluminum panels are now on the inside of the hall. Right after the opening in 2014, the artwork got a lot of attention from around the world. Some called it The largest artwork in the world or The Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam."

LAKHTA

.This small village on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, about 15 km northwest of the city, is home to human settlements on the banks of the Neva. It was on the territory of Lakhta that the remains of a man’s parking site of three thousand years ago were found.

In official documents, a settlement named Lakhta dates back to 1500. The name is derived from the Finnish-speaking word lahti - "bay". This is one of the few settlements that has not changed its name throughout its 500-year history. Also known as Laches, Lahes-by, Lahes and was originally inhabited by Izhora. In the last decades of the 15th century, Lakhta was a village (which indicates a significant population) and was the center of the eponymous grand-parish volost, which was part of the Spassko-Gorodensky graveyard of the Orekhovsky district of the Vodskaya Pyatina. In the village, there were 10 courtyards with 20 people (married men). In Lakhta, on average, there were 2 families per yard, and the total population of the village probably reached 75 people.

From the notes on the margins of the Swedish scribe book of the Spassky graveyard of 1640, it follows that the lands along the lower reaches of the Neva River and parts of the Gulf of Finland, including Lakhta Karelskaya, Perekulya (from the Finnish “back village”, probably because of its position relative to Lakhti) and Konduy Lakhtinsky, were royal by letter of honor on January 15, 1638 transferred to the possession of the Stockholm dignitary, Rickschulz general Bernhard Sten von Stenhausen, a Dutchman by birth. On October 31, 1648, the Swedish government granted these lands to the city of Nyuen (Nyenschanz). With the arrival of the Swedes in Prievye, Lakhta was settled by the Finns, who until the middle of the 20th century made up the vast majority of the villagers.

On December 22, 1766, Catherine 2 granted Lakhta Manor, which was then in the Office of the Chancellery from the buildings of palaces and gardens, "in which and in her villages with courtyards 208 souls," her favorite Count Orlov. Not later than 1768, Count J.A. Bruce took over the estate. In 1788, Lakhta Manor was listed behind him with wooden services on a dry land (high place) and the villages Lakhta, Dubki, Lisiy Nos and Konnaya belonging to it also on dry land, in those villages of male peasants 238 souls. On May 1, 1813, Lakhta passed into the possession of the landowners of the Yakovlevs. On October 5, 1844, Count A.I. Stenbok-Fermor entered into the possession of the Lakhtinsky estate, which then had 255 male souls. This clan was the owner of the estate until 1912, when its last representative got into debt and noble custody was established over the estate. On October 4, 1913, in order to pay off his debts, he was forced to go for corporatization, and the Lakhta estate passed into the ownership of the Joint Stock Company “Lakhta” of Count Stenbock-Fermor and Co.

After the revolution, Lakhta was left on its own for a while, here on the former estate of the counts Stenbock-Fermorov on May 19, 1919, the Lakhta excursion station was opened, which existed there until 1932. In the early 1920s, sand mining began on Lakhta beaches, and the abandoned and dilapidated peat plant of the Lakhta estate in 1922 took over the Oblzemotdel and put it into operation after major repairs. In 1963, the village of Lakhta was included in the Zhdanovsky (Primorsky) district of Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

At the beginning of Lakhtinsky Prospekt, on the banks of the Lakhtinsky spill, there was the village of Rakhilax (Rahilax-hof, Rahila, Rokhnovo). Most likely, under this name only one or several courtyards are designated. There is an assumption that the name of the village was formed from the Finnish raahata - “drag, drag,” because there could be a place for transportation through the isthmus of the Lakhtinsky spill (we should not forget that not only the bridge over the channel connecting the spill with the Gulf of Finland was not yet here, the duct itself was many times wider than the current one). The search book of the Spassko-Gorodensky graveyard of 1573, describing the Lakhta lands, mentions that there were 2 lodges in the “Rovgunov” village, from which we can conclude that we are talking about the village of Rohilaks, which the Russian scribes remade into a more understandable to them Rovgunovo. The village was empty in Swedish time and was counted as a wasteland of the village of Lahta.

On the banks of the Lakhtinsky spill, near the confluence of the Yuntolovka River, from the 17th century there existed the village of Bobylka (Bobylskaya), which merged into the village of Olgino only at the beginning of the 20th century, but was found on maps until the 1930s. It is probably the Search Book that mentions it Spassko-Gorodensky churchyard in 1573 as a village "in Lakhta in Perekui", behind which there was 1 obzh. With the arrival of the Swedes by royal letter on January 15, 1638, the village was transferred to the possession of the Stockholm dignitary, Rickshaw General Bernhard Sten von Stenhausen, a Dutchman by birth. On October 31, 1648, the Swedish government granted Lahti lands to the city of Nyuen (Nyenschanz). On the Swedish map of the 1670s, in the place of the village of Bobylsky, the village of Lahakeülä is marked (küla - the village (Fin.)). The village could subsequently be called Bobyl from the Russian word "bobyl."

The owners of Bobylskaya were both Count Orlov, and Count Y. A. Bruce, and the landowners Yakovlev. In 1844, Count A.I. Stenbok-Fermor entered into the possession of the Lakhtinsky estate (which included the village of Bobyl). This family was the owner of the estate until 1913, when the owners, in order to pay off their debts, had to go for corporatization, and the Lakhta estate was transferred to the ownership of the Lakhta Joint-Stock Company of Count Stenbock-Fermor and Co. By the middle of the 20th century, the village merged with the village of Lakhta.

The name Konnaya Lakhta (Konnaya) has been known since the 16th century, although earlier it sounded like Konduya (Konduya Lakhtinskaya) or just Kondu (from the Finnish kontu - courtyard, manor). Subsequently, this name was replaced by the more familiar Russian ear with the word "Horse". In the Search Book of the Spassko-Gorodensky Pogost in 1573, it is mentioned as the village "on Kovdui", where 1 obzh was listed, which indicates that there most likely was one yard. On January 15, 1638, together with neighboring villages, it was transferred to the possession of the Stockholm dignitary, Rickschulz General Bernhard Steen von Stenhausen, of Dutch origin. On October 31, 1648, the Swedish government granted these lands to the city of Nyuen (Nyenschanz). In a deed of gift, Konduya Lakhtinskaya is called a village, which indicates a noticeable increase in its population. Later, on the Swedish map of the 1670s, on the site of the present Horse Lahti, the village of Konda-bai is marked (by - village (sv)).

The owners of Konnaya Lakhta, as well as the villages of Bobylskaya and Lakhta, were in turn Count Orlov, Count Ya. A. Bruce, and the landowners Yakovlev. In 1844, Count A.I. Stenbok-Fermor entered the possession of the Lakhta estate (which included Konnaya Lakhta. This family was the owner of the estate until 1913, when the owners had to go to corporations to pay off their debts, and the Lakhta estate became the property of Lakhta Joint Stock Company of Count Stenbock-Fermor and Co. In 1963, Horse Lahta was included in the Zhdanov (Primorsky) district of Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

As the dacha village of Olgino appeared at the end of the 19th century and initially consisted of both Olgin itself and the villages of Vladimirovka (now part of Lisiy Nos) and Aleksandrovka. In the first half of the 18th century, this territory was part of the Verpelev palace estate, which in the second half of the 18th century was granted to Count G. G. Orlov, then it was owned by the family of landowners the Yakovlevs, in the middle of the 19th century the estate was transferred to the counts of Stenbock-Fermor. In 1905 A.V. Stenbok-Fermor, the then owner of Lakhta lands, divided the lands around Lakhta into separate plots with the intention of selling them profitably for dachas. So there were the villages of Olgino (named after the wife of Olga Platonovna), Vladimirovka (in honor of the father of the owner; the coastal part of the modern village of Lisy Nos) and Alexandrov or Aleksandrovskaya (in honor of Alexander Vladimirovich himself). It is likely that on the site of the village was the village of Olushino (Olushino odhe) - a search book of the Spassko-Gorodensky churchyard in 1573 mentions that there were 1 obzh in the village of Olushkov’s, which suggests that at least one residential the yard. On behalf of Olushka (Olpherius). Most likely, the village was deserted in Swedish time and then was already listed as a wasteland belonging to the village of Lahta. Thus, the name of the village could be given in harmony with the name of the mistress and the old name of the village.

The villages were planned among a sparse pine forest (the layout was preserved almost unchanged), so there were more amenities for living and spending time there than in Lakhta. A park was set up here, a summer theater, a sports ("gymnastic") playground, a tennis court, and a yacht club were arranged.

In the 1910s about 150 winter cottages were built in Olgino, many of which are striking monuments of "summer cottage" architecture. In 1963, the village of Olgino was included in the Zhdanovsky (Primorsky) district of Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

Near Olgino, in the area of the Dubki park, there was a small village Verpeleva (Verpelevo), which consisted of only a few yards. In the first half of the XVIII century. this territory was part of the palace estate "Verpeleva", which in the second half of the XVIII century. It was granted to Count G. G. Orlov, then passed to the Counts of Stenbock-Fermor. The village has not existed for a long time, but the entire reed-covered peninsula (barely protruding above the water of the Verpier-Luda peninsula (Verper Luda (from the Finnish luoto - “small rocky island”)) still existed, and there was another spelling the name of this island is Var Pala Ludo).

Kamenka. The Novgorod scribal book mentions two villages in the Lakhta region with a similar name, referring to the possessions of Selivan Zakharov, son of Okhten, with his son and 5 other co-owners. On the lands of this small patrimony, which, unlike the estate was inherited, peasants lived in 3 villages, including: the village "Kamenka in Lakhta near the sea" in 5 yards with 5 people and arable land in 1,5 obzhi, the village "on Kamenka "in 2 courtyards with 2 people and arable land in 1 obzhu. For the use of land, the peasants paid the owners of the patrimony 16 money and gave 1/3 of the rye harvest. Thus, in the 16th century on the Kamenka River (another name for the Kiviyoki River, which is the literal translation of kivi - "stone", joki - "river") there was one large village of Kamenka near its confluence with the Lakhtinsky spill and the second, smaller, somewhere upstream. On the drawing of Izhora land in 1705, a village under this name is depicted in the area of the modern village of Kamenka. The village of Kamennaya in the middle reaches of Kamenka and on the map of 1792 is designated. Other name options are Kaumenkka, Kiviaja.

In the second half of the 18th century, Kamenka became a vacation spot for Russian Germans. Here in 1865, German colonists founded their "daughter" colony on leased land. Since then, the village has received the name Kamenka Colony (so called until the 1930s). In 1892, a colony near the village of Volkovo "budded" from it. The inhabitants of both colonies belonged to the Novo-Saratov parish and since 1871 had a prayer house in Kamenka, which was visited by 250 people. He maintained a school for 40 students. The house was closed in 1935 and later demolished.

Currently, Kamenka exists as a holiday village, located along the road to Levashovo. Since 1961 - in the city, part of the planning area in the North-West, from the mid-1990s. built up with multi-storey residential buildings and cottages.

Volkovo. The settlement is about southeast of the village of Kamenka - on the old road to Kamenka, on the bank of a stream that flows into Kamenka between the village of Kamenka and the Shuvalovsky quarry. In 1892, a German colony emerged on the territory of the village, "budding" from a nearby colony in the village of Kamenka. The origin of Volkovo is not clear, the village is found only on maps of 1912, 1930, 1939, 1943. and probably appeared no earlier than the 19th century.

Kolomyagi. Scribe books of the XV — XVI centuries and Swedish plans testify that small settlements already existed on the site of Kolomyag. Most likely, these were first Izhora or Karelian, then Finnish farms, which were empty during the hostilities of the late XVII century.

The name "Kolomyag" connoisseurs decipher in different ways. Some say that it came from the "colo" - in Finnish cave and "pulp" - a hill, a hill. The village is located on the hills, and such an interpretation is quite acceptable. Others look for the root of the name in the Finnish word "koaa" - bark - and believe that trees were processed here after felling. Another version of the origin of the name from the Finnish "kello" is the bell, and it is associated not with the feature of the mountain, but with the "bell on the mountain" - a tower with a signal bell standing on a hill.

The owners of Kolomyazhsky lands were Admiral General A.I. Osterman, Count A.P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin, a family of Volkonsky. In 1789, the Volkonskys sold these lands to retired colonel Sergei Savvich Yakovlev. On his estate S. S. Yakovlev built a manor and lived in it with his wife and seven daughters. The once-Finnish population of Kolomyag was “Russified” by that time - it was made up of descendants of serfs resettled by Osterman and Bestuzhev-Rumin from their villages in Central Russia (natives of the Volga and Galich) and Ukraine. Then the name "Kellomyaki" began to sound in Russian fashion - "Kolomyagi", although later the old name also existed, especially among local Finns. And not without reason the indigenous Kolomozhites associate their origin with the Volga places, and the southern half of the village is now called “Galician”.

Yakovlev died in 1818. Five years after his death, a division of the territory of the manor was made. The village of Kolomyagi was divided in half between two of his daughters. The border was the Bezymyanny stream. The southeastern part of the village of Kolomyagi beyond Bezymyanny creek and a plot on the banks of the Bolshaya Nevka passed to the daughter Ekaterina Sergeevna Avdulina.

Daughter Yakovleva Elena Sergeevna - the wife of General Alexei Petrovich Nikitin, a hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, who was awarded the highest military orders and twice a gold sword with the inscription "For courage", died early, leaving her daughter Elizabeth. The northwestern part of Kolomyag inherited the young Elizabeth, so this part of Kolomyag was practically inherited by the father of Yakovlev’s granddaughter, Count A.P. Nikitin, who in 1832 became the owner of the entire village. It is his name that is stored in the names of the streets - 1st and 2nd Nikitinsky and Novo-Nikitinsky. The new owner built a stone mansion on the estate’s estate - an excellent example of classicism of the first third of the 19th century, which became his country house and has survived to this day and has been occupied until recently by the Nursing Home. It is believed that this mansion was built according to the project of the famous architect A.I. Melnikov. The severity and modesty of the architectural appearance of the facades and residential chambers of the Nikitin mansion was opposed by the splendor of ceremonial interiors, in particular the two-light dance hall with choirs for musicians. Unfortunately, with repeated alterations and repairs, many details of the decor and stucco emblems of the owners disappeared. Only two photographs of the 1920s and preserved fragments of ornamental molding and paintings on the walls and ceiling show the past richness of the decorative decoration of this architectural monument. The mansion was surrounded by a small park. In it stood a stone pagan woman brought from the southern steppes of Russia (transferred to the Hermitage), and a pond with a plakun waterfall was built. Near the pond there was a "walk of love" from the "paradise" apple trees - it was called so because the bride and groom passed through it after the wedding. Here, in the shadow of these apple trees, young lovers made appointments.

Under the Orlov-Denisov opposite the mansion (now Main Street, 29), the structures of an agricultural farm were erected, partially preserved to this day, and the greenhouse. Behind the farm were the master's fields. On them, as the New Time newspaper reported in August 1880, they tested the reaping and shearing machines brought from America.

In the 19th century, the provincial surveyor Zaitsev submitted for approval the highway called the Kolomyagskoye Shosse. The route was supposed to connect the village, gradually gaining fame as a summer residence of the "middle arm", with St. Petersburg. The construction of the road ended in the 1840s, and then horse-drawn and country-house crafts became the most important articles of peasant income. In addition, peasants either built small dachas in their yards, or rented their huts for the summer. Located away from the roads, surrounded by fields, the village was chosen by multi-family citizens.

The income from the summer cottage industry increased from year to year, which was facilitated by the summer movement of omnibuses that opened on the new highway from the City Council building. They walked four times a day, each accommodated 16 people, the fare cost 15 kopecks. Even when the Finnish Railway with the nearest Udelnaya station came into operation in 1870, the highway remained the main access road through which public carriages pulled by a trio of horses ran from the Stroganov (now Ushakovsky) bridge.

I understand that this moment has transcended time. I am not the first to rest here; I cannot be the last. My hands are indented with the imprints of moss. I pull my cardigan closer and shiver. I can almost sense the ghosts around me. Time has not been forgiving to your beauty; you are crumbling, lost. You are inanimate but once you must have been so personable that you seemed alive, I know. Your halls filled with laughter. Your ballrooms decorated sensationally, decked out with happiness and antique charm. It makes my heart feel heavy that you've been destroyed this way. Now all that's left of you are the ruins of what once was, but I know. My imagination fills in all the blanks, aided by the whispers of your ethereal spirits. I wish I'd seen you in your grandieur. But I can dream of you.

So today was bizarre. I won't even go into the weirdness of the geography exam. But when I was searching for somewhere to shoot -the first place I found, I did some shots in ivy, but I was afraid I was going to fall down this massive hole, and so I climbed a tree and bumshuffled along it, then decided I was far too afraid of heights to cross it far enough to get the nice light - it was high. So I climbed down it then almost tripped over this furry thing. When I looked back it was this horrific long bird skull, like something from a horror movie. So I packed up and moved on. I ignored a 'private land' sign and found the most beautiful spot to shoot, ever, but I barely dared pause for breath because I didn't know who owned it. I need to go back with someone else. And then I moved on again, into the public woods, but another private land part, and took photos in this gorgeous patch of light. I wasn't there long but two dogs ran up to me, butch and fairly intimidating, and their owner walked up and apologised. Judging on appearances, I'd say he was in his thirties, with a metal chain lead swinging in one hand and his overalls on. He looked kind of like he should be on a construction site, not walking through the idyllic, peaceful woods. He walked on, and a moment later he walked back and asked me what I was taking photos of. I said mostly the flowers, but I explained my 365 project and told him I realised it sounded vain. He smiled and told me that he wished he could have captured the light coming through the trees (which was what I was trying to do) and he hoped that's what I was doing, because it looked so beautiful. I agreed and said that every day in the area I saw change, and that that was beautiful too. He told me he's walked through the seasons and he finds the changes miraculous, all in his gruff voice. He asked me if I lived in the area, and I said not far, just up the farm. He wished me luck with my project and left.

Lesson for today; never judge a book by its cover. And don't climb trees alone. Or convince yourself something's following you.

I'm planning to go far tomorrow. An adventure. I have the day off school. Why not, it'd be fun.

Understand of depth of field

EMMETT: *Scratches head.* "But I don't understand why we are taking delicious food out of Daddy's kitchen, and leaving it here."

SCOUT: "It's tradition of course, Emmett!" *Giggles.*

ROSIE: "That's right, Emmett!" *Giggles too.*

PADDY: "Scout!" *Looks askance at Scout.* "Rosie!" *Looks askance at Rosie.*

SCOUT and ROSIE: "What?!?"

DAISY-MAUD: *Kindly.* "Scout, this is Emmett's first Christmas."

SCOUT: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "Sorry Emmett. I forgot!"

JAGO: "So Emmett doesn't know about the traditions we have for Christmas, Rosie."

ROSIE: "I'm sorry Emmett." *Remorseful.*

EMMETT: "That's alright, Scout and Rosie." *Smiles.* "Really!"

BOGART: "Didn't they have Christmas where you came from, Emmett?"

EMMETT: "Oh yes, Bogart. At Christmas all the bears at the orphanage gathered together and waited."

ROSIE: "Waited?"

SCOUT: "Waited for what, Emmett?"

EMMETT: "For our new Mummies and Daddies! They would visit in the lead up to Christmas, and the lucky ones were picked. But I wasn't lucky and didn't get picked last Christmas, and that was my first Christmas ever, and then after Christmas I was blown by the wind from the bear orphanage in Shropshire to Bearingham Palace, and... well, of course you know the rest."

PADDY: "Well, you have a Daddy now, so you don't need to worry about waiting for one any more." *Pats Emmett comfortingly on the shoulder.*

EMMETT: "And that's what I don't understand, Paddy. If daddy is here already, why are we putting out food for him."

PADDY: "This food isn't for Daddy. Do you remember us all talking about Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear?"

EMMETT: "Yes! You encouraged me to write my wish down on my list to be sent to Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, and perhaps if I am good, I will get my wish."

ROSIE: "Well, the food is for them, Emmett!"

DAISY-MAUD: "Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear work very hard delivering presents and granting wishes for good boys and girls..."

SCOUT: "And bears, Daisy-Maud! Don't forget the good bears... like me!"

ROSIE: "And me!"

DAISY-MAUD: "And bears." *Chuckles.* "They travel across the world in one night. I should know. They rescued me, Danny Boy, Orson and Algie from the ocean liner we were on and made sure we made it in time for Christmas Day a few years ago. Isn't that so Jago?"

JAGO: "Indeed it is, Daisy-Maud! And so, we leave food for Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear to enjoy as a thank you for bringing us beautiful presents and fulfilling our wishes. We know that Father Christmas likes mince pies, and the Christmas Bear is very partial to shortbread biscuits."

EMMETT: "Oh, good! So I can eat the carrot then!" *Lifts carrot to mouth.* "I do have a bit of a grumbly tummy! Grumbly tummy Jago! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.*

SCOUT: "No Emmett! Don't eat the carrot!" *Shakes head vehmently.* "The carrot is for Rudolph!"

EMMETT: "Rudolph? Who is Rudolph?"

DAISY-MAUD: "Rudolph is the red nosed Reindeer who leads the sleigh for Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear and he makes sure that if they ride through a fog, he can lead them with his red glowing nose."

EMMETT: "Oh!" *Puts paw to mouth.*

PADDY: "The carrot is for him to enjoy, and to keep yup his strength."

EMMETT: "Oh!" *Puts down carrot.*

PADDY: "Well! Good job everybear in bringing all the nice treats for Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear!"

BOGART: "And Rudolph!"

PADDY: "And Rudolph!" *Nods.*

SCOUT: "Many helping paws make it easier, Paddy."

JAGO "They certainly do, Scout."

PADDY: "Now, let's go and play until bedtime. Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear come tonight, but they won't come until we are asleep, because the Magic of Christmas only happens in the wee small hours of Christmas Day when good little bears are dreaming of sugar plums..."

SCOUT: "And mince pies."

ROSIE: "And marzipan."

EMMETT: "And chocolates."

BOGART: "And rocky road, and..."

PADDY: "Yes, yes, and all those things and many more besides. Soon it will be Christmas Day, and then, dear Emmett, you shall see what the Magic of Christmas brings!"

EMMETT: "Oh!" *Puts both paws to mouth.*

Paddy, Scout, Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Rosie, Emmett and I would like to wish all our Flickr friends and followers the very best for the festive season. Thank you for all the interest you have shown in our photographs and adventures this year, and all the support and encouragement you have shown. We really do appreciate it.

May you have a wonderful Christmas; safe, and filled with happiness and love whomever you spend it with and whatever you may do.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Daisy-Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.

Made by Merrythought in England, Emmett is a charming little bear, sweet and smiling, crafted from multi-tonal marl grey mohair and featuring golden velvet paws. He is accessorised with a classic tartan woollen scarf. He is number 23 or a limited worldwide edition of 200.

He understands the risk. He knows the sea will be good with his children even if she takes him away from them.

I went on a sea trip with the fishmen, ones who make a bet everytime they sail. They have freedom. They have hapiness. They know a sudden storm will come someday. Their fathers may have gone. Their grandpas may have gone. The sea is their friend. Beautiful friend. Sometimes she is mad. Sometimes she is a mess. But she is always there. She is loyal.

You, my friend, you can choose among your options. These men, they choose between the sea and the starve.

And they are the most happy men I have ever seen.

Happy New Year! If you are like me, you need music to survive. On the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, music is right there at the top with self actualization. If you don't have music, how do you understand yourself, come to terms with the past, present, and future? if you don't have music, how do you cope with the small and large tragedies that threaten to destroy you? A world without music is one in which I wouldn't be able to survive. So, now that it's officially 2016, here's my way of saying goodbye to 2015.

I will always make the caveat here that it would be impossible for me to listen to every record that came out every year. I have a limited amount of time and I have a full time job...listening to records would be an amazing full time job on it's own but it wouldn't pay the bills, of course, so for now I'll just do what I can.

2015 was an amazing year for independent music and creative thought. There are probably thousands of records out there I didn't hear that I would love. So, it's surprising to me that when I look at the top lists/Best of the year lists of many major publications, I'm left with a stale feeling. There are only so many times you can read recommendations for Kendrick Lamar and Courtney Barnett before you realize all the top ten lists are starting to sound almost exactly the same and that music journalists have become lazier than sloths.

My aim in creating these lists is a little different than most. I don't really care about the major label type of artists. They bore me. They are formulated to appeal to a wide variety of people and I don't consider myself part of this group, especially in terms of my musical tastes. I prefer the extraordinary, the experimental, and the weird. I like music that challenges me to think and feel instead of just maintains a certain boring status quo. At the same time, the top album here is incredibly accessible and it didn't get the recognition for end of year lists in the States that I thought it should.

Here's my Best Records of 2015 list:

1. FFS (Franz Ferdinand + Sparks): S/T

I've been a Franz Ferdinand fan for a long time-in fact, since they became a band. I saw them on their first US tour and have seen and photographed them several times since. Yet, Sparks is a much newer band for me to come around to. I tried listening to them a few years back and found their sound to be just way too sugary and too oriented in disco. I'll admit, I also saw photographs of them and Ronald Mael's mustache reminded me of Hitler and made me scared they might be anti-Semitic so I avoided them based on that. When I saw they collaborated with Franz Ferdinand, I looked more into the band and was reassured that the Mael brothers of Spark come from an Austrian Jewish descent. I found quite a few singles to love, though I still feel like they are better in moderation (I feel the same way about Abba, even though I think they are tremendously fun.)

Somehow, though, the dark and seductive qualities of Franz Ferdinand paired with the up tempo disco pop qualities of Sparks make for some of the most interesting sounds and song compositions. This is catchiness to the extreme and each song will get stuck in your head in different ways and at different moments of the day. Think of the best singles by the band Queen and you'll be close to how great this is. The album is fun, to be sure, but it's also more than that. How many albums will you find "martyr" rhyming with "Sartre" for instance? Also have to say, even though I have decided not to do a top shows list this year, this was definitely one of my favorites!

2. Sufjan Stevens: Carrie & Lowell

I was shocked when I didn't find this album on more best of lists. Sufjan has created some delicate music before in the past but this is him at his best-it has the same gentleness he created with Seven Swans with the more clever songwriting we saw in Come on Feel the Illinoise. It has become my favorite album of his to be sure and the sense of honesty is both disarming and alarming at the same time. Some of the lyrics really take you to the edge in many ways, "Fourth of July" especially. When someone bares all like Sufjan has here, it deserves a listen!

3. Low: Ones and Sixes

You'll have a hard time finding a band that is as sincere and as hard working as Low is for as long as they have been creating music. Low hasn't ever, in fact, released a dud album. Each one of them has their gems and their strengths and Ones and Sixes is no different. Low, as always, ask questions of the listener. Sometimes, they give answers and sometimes they encourage you to think for yourself. There are times when Low is bare and deep and other times when Alan Sparhawk's and Mimi Parker's vocals together provide a lushness not unlike the sublime feeling of sinking your teeth into a deep dark chocolate truffle. If you're not already a fan of the band, I highly recommend you invest some time and energy into listening to their most recent as well as, honestly, any and all of their 11 releases. I've never been disappointed.

Low was also another band I greatly enjoyed seeing live in Chicago this year and they are coming to Evanston to Space January 30th..looking forward to it!

4. Julia Kent: Asperities

If you took the music inside my soul, it would sound very much like Julia Kent's cello playing. There are no words and yet she creates the words I can't express sometimes and provides relief for me by doing so. Some words are used too often...still others haven't been invented yet. Thank you, Julia Kent, for providing the catharsis that comes from feeling the pain of the universe and still wanting to be a part of it and create inside it.

5. GY!BE (Godspeed You! Black Emperor): Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

I'm really looking forward to seeing Godspeed You! Black Emperor at Thalia Hall in Chicago on Valentine's Day in 2016 because I find turbulence and emotional chaos pretty romantic. Ok, so now that you have a little too much information about me, if you like other Godspeed You! Black Emperor records, you're sure to like this one as well. It's an instrumental maelstrom to be sure from start to finish but it's well worth the journey. You feel like with each GY!BE, you're looking at apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic collapsed cities, half turned into dust and while you're sifting through the ashes, you gain insight into the former humanity of it all. I'm not saying that you should only listen to GY!BE at the end of the world but it sure would be a great soundtrack for it. In any case, the ensemble is always gloriously effective at creating a mood and sustaining it and this is definitely no exception. I'm pretty sure Efrim Menuck is one of those people who will never sell out and I like that people like him exist in this world. Tra la la...

6. Django Django: Born Under Saturn

Life is complicated..I mean, really complicated...and there are a great deal of sounds But what Django Django does is organize all the greatest sounds and make them melodic and interesting and...at the same time...not overstimulating. When I listen to Django Django, I hear catchy yet careful songs filled with intricate and interesting sounds that make the temporal lobes of my brain so extremely happy, I start to feel like I am actually floating in the atmosphere. And, if being a cloud weren't enough, you can actually dance to this stuff...highly recommended!

7. Gwenno: Y Dydd Olaf

Gwenno Mererid Saunders used to be Gwenno Pipette, which was a band I saw and loved awhile back (super catchy and fun!) The difference here is that she sings in Welsh and it's a bit more psychedelic as well. It's not as accessible as Joy Formidable but it's a little less weird than Super Furry Animals. All in all, it's a great and memorable record that has fantastic melodies extending beyond the wall hit by so many contemporary musicians.

Check it out and decide for yourself!: www.gwenno.info/

8. Cinchel: The Timing was Right for a Walk in the Woods

"Capital letters don't mean anything..they are useless," said my husband Cinchel while I complained that the album title on his Bandcamp was not acknowledging the proper capitalization of a title. That pretty much sums up my husband... he won't let any kind of pre-determined structure define him unlike myself who finds grammar and spelling rather organizing and comforting amidst the chaos of the modern world and all of it's endless rambling words and punctuation.

I digress...Cinchel is my husband and I am lucky to have him in my life. Every day or almost every day, I get to experience a part of him playing in the same room I am editing photos and each day he seems to come into his own a little bit. It's always an interesting dynamic..although we have very different day jobs, two artists living together under the same roof, struggling to create amidst a 40-60 hour work week. Life gets intense, complicated, draining, and will kill you if you let it. Cinchel is the optimist and he always finds a way to try to cheer me up...he doesn't seem to think about atrocities in the world like genocide as constantly as I do or, if he does, it doesn't let it get to him. Our cats definitely help.

We survive to create or do we create or survive? Either way, it's a bit of a symbiotic relationship. Cinchel is extremely prolific and puts gals like me to shame in that way...and, even more so, he provides the quality behind the quantity which is a rarity in this modern world. Check out his albums here and, if you don't connect to the above one in question, there is a little variety amongst his works-all well worth hearing:

9. Richard Skelton: Memorious Earth

This too shall pass and by this I mean us and the planet we live on. But, the thing about this particular funeral is that we'll all be dead and won't be able to witness it. Memorious Earth has a sort of dark emotional tone befitting of a eulogy and, at the same time, an homage to the sadness inherent in us as a species. It's what we admit is inescapable, passed down genetically and only growing stronger within our DNA as deep feeling humans. This is a little bit of a challenge to listen to but it's necessary when experiencing the loss of each moment in our lives when we made a different choice or couldn't make a choice, when we failed ourselves and our families, when we couldn't be what we dreamed we were and everything was lost slowly but surely.

10. Ian William Craig: Cradle for the Wanting

If you were to hear angels singing to you at the end of your life while you drifted in and out of consciousness, it would probably sound a little like this.

And then, your transported across different dimensions that you didn't know existed before. The static in the atmosphere threatens to interfere but you refuse to let it have it's way. Instead, you float and make the clouds your playthings, elevated by quite a different sort of wavelength.

Craig's Cradle for the Waiting is uplifting and beautiful, a little slice of a postmodern heaven that is flawless because it has small impenetrable flaws like little cracks in the universe where the static creeps in so it just seems more realistic that way.

11. Helen: The Original Faces

Anyone who is familiar with the music of Grouper is aware of the breathy and often drifty vocals of lead singer Liz Harris. With Helen, the songs pack more of a punch relative to her and they are aided by a poppy shoegaze texture that makes them as lush as they are loving. There are times even I have to admit I'm not in the mood for the lackadaisical stylings of Harris in Grouper but Helen is definitely easier to get behind. It also makes me think Harris might be developing more self confidence and a sense of an artist...wish she would come to Chicago to play and also, this time around, use a little more light.

12. William Basinski: Cascade

Cascade is an album that makes you also think a little bit about the dreamland that only exists between your waking life and your sleeping life. If you could create a level of subconscious with it's own soundtrack and inject a little bit of Cascade, you'd probably become a much more well balanced individual. This record leads to interesting dreams but also has a level of reassurance that is perfect for experiencing at the end of a long day. If it seems strange to describe an album as perfect to fall asleep to, realize you're reading the words of someone who has struggled on and off with insomnia for the last 20 years and is finally optimistic about my ability to fall asleep on a more regular basis. If you need an album like this, consider it a gift to you and to humanity. I'm so happy Basinski is alive and creating music.

13. Sóley: Ask the Deep

Some people might thing that 13 is an unlucky number but maybe those people would still be enlightened by the music of Sóley Stefánsdóttir or Sóley for short. She put out some wonderful music with Seabear and Sin Fang and, now that she's a solo artist, she continues to show tremendous growth in her own singular journey as a musician. Sóley is creative and surely is contributing to positive aspects of our collective consciousness. There's something quite magical in Iceland that makes empowered female artists like her, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir and so many more. Of course, Bjork also put out a great album called Vulnicura that didn't make this list but also comes highly recommended. I don't really feel the need to talk about albums you've probably already heard and heard of, though.

14. Allah-Las: Worship the Sun

Oh, I love garage rock and I crave garage rock to feel in this nice happy place sometimes when I need something with a little more structure than experimental drone music (which granted still has a substantial place in my life). Allah-Las probably aren't reinventing any wheels here but it's just so darn catchy and well put together that I love listening to this record. It takes me back to my former life as a sixties flower child when I didn't have a care in the world and I lay in the sun like a cat and listened to music all day. In some ways, this sounds like a found record from this period, in fact, instead of a 2015 release. There's a sense of authenticity to the sound even if the production is better than many records that came out in this decade. It would fit well on a Nuggets box set. Oh California, keep your wonderful music coming to this side of the country!

15. Wand: 1000 Days

Wand actually put out two albums this year and both are fantastic. Their first release of 2015, Golem, is much more heavy hitting than this lighter and brighter release. There's more of a psychedelic pop music influence here and it's quite weird as well as wonderful. These are songs to relish in, a grand adventure to an enlightened level of consciousness. You'll feel like you're on a blissful carpet ride you won't want to end for many moments! At other moments, there is still the heft of the former album Golem but it isn't as overpowering.

p.s. Unless otherwise noted in my image Tags, all the images I post here are taken with an iPhone and processed entirely on an iPad using a wide variety of apps. Certainly not as capable as using a "real" camera and Photoshop, but I'm enjoying the liberation of simply seeing, capturing, fiddling, and posting a wider variety of images than was otherwise possible for me in the past.

A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read "Puppies For Sale."

Signs like that have a way of attracting small children,

and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the store owner's sign.

"How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked.

The store owner replied, "Anywhere from $30 to $50."

The little boy reached in his pocket and

pulled out some change. "I have $2.37," he said.

"Can I please look at them?"

The store owner smiled and whistled and

out of the kennel came "Lady", who ran down

the aisle of his store followed by five teeny,

tiny balls of fur.

One puppy was lagging considerably behind.

Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging,

limping puppy and said, "What's wrong with that little dog?"

The store owner explained that the veterinarian

had examined the little puppy and discovered it didn't have a hip socket.

It would always limp and always be lame.

The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy

that I want to buy."

The store owner said, "No, you don't want to

buy that little dog. If you really want him,

I'll just give him to you."

The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight

into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger,

and said, "I don't want you to give him to me.

That little dog is worth every bit as much as

all the other dogs and I'll pay full price.

In fact, I'll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents

a month until I have him paid for."

The store owner countered, "You really don't want

to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able

to run, jump and play with you like the other puppies."

To his surprise, the little boy reached down

and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted,

crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace.

He looked up at the store owner and softly replied,

"Well, I don't run so well myself and the little

puppy will need someone who understands!"

We ALL need someone who understands!

We saw a couple wolves today in Yellowstone Park. They don't really pay much attention to people, which is understandable. There is a group of people who watch the wolves daily - summer and winter.

Some times the symmetrical ones just grab me so deeply. I can look at them for a long time just day dreaming. I hope you can also enjoy them. Just imagine them being over 8 feet wide on a gallery wall. That is the way I would like them all to be.

Father and son collaboration

Our photographic art is a kinetic motion study, from the results of interacting with my son A.J and his toys.

He was born severely handicapped much like a quadriplegic. On December 17,1998. Our family’s goal has always been to help A.J. use his mind, even though he has minimal use of his body.

A.J. likes to watch lights and movement. One of the few things he can do for himself is to operate a switch that sets in motion lights and various shiny, colorful streamers and toys that swirl above his bed.

One day I took a picture of A.J. with his toys flying out from the big mobile near his bed like swings on a carnival ride. I liked the way the swirling objects and colors looked in the photo.

I wanted to study the motion more and photograph the whirling objects in an artful way, I wanted my son A.J. to be a part of it. After all, he’s the one who inspires me. When A.J. and I work together on our motion artwork, A.J. starts his streamers and objects twirling, I take the photographs.

Activating a tiny switch might not seem like much to some, but it’s all A.J. can do. He controls the direction the mobile will spin, as well as when it starts and stops. The shutter speeds are long, and sometimes, I move the camera and other times I hold it still.

I begin our creation with a Nikon digital camera. Then I use my computer with Photoshop to alter the images into what I feel might be an artistic way. Working with Photoshop, I find the best parts from several images and combine them into the final composite photograph. I consider the finished work to be fine art. The computer is just the vehicle that helps my expressions grow.

I take the photographs and A.J. adds the magic. It’s something this father and son do together. After I’ve taken a few shots, I show him the photos in the back of the camera. When the images are completed, I show him from a laptop. He just looks. He can’t tell me whether or not he likes the images, but he’s always ready to work with me again.

It offers me my only glance into A.J.’s secret world. We’ve built a large collection of images and I hope the motion and color move you as much as they do me.

A.J. inspires me to work harder to understand my life in the areas of art, photography, people, spirituality, and so much more. He truly sets my mind in motion and helps me find the beauty in everyday things.

I spent few days trying to understand if this one was a great egret or a white heron. I decided for the egret. I hope I'm right, but feel free to correct me in case I'm not!

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Albert Einstein

Our new (to us) apartment butts up to a 15 acre wooded ridge. When I look out my living room window I stare into the woods. In the short time I've lived here, I've seen deer, all manner of squirrels (brown, grey, light tan, black, and white), birds (too many species to name). They're all so exciting to watch! Oh what a little nature can do for the soul!

This was the last picture from this drone. It unexpectedly and with no logical explanation suddenly spiraled down to the woods below. My grandson will go drone hunting when the weather improves.

"I understand there is a girl of good character and woman's learning in your home. You and I are of the same year and same day. Could we not be sames together?"

Those are the words that paired Snow Flower and Lily together as "laotongs", a journey that should have lasted a lifetime but when a misunderstanding occurs their friendships is sorely tested and threatens to come apart.

A beautiful, yet somewhat heartbreaking book about China in the 19th century, highlighting the concept of a woman's unworthiness, the practise of arranged marriages, foot binding and the use of nu shu, a secret writing used exclusively by women to communicate in secret and from the influence of men.

And exquisite and absorbing story. A book I found hard to put down. I will most definitely be looking for more books by this author.

"Good afternoon folks, I'm Hup Toothree, and welcome to Canadian Football Report, where we kick around current topics, tackle illusive issues, intercept airborne rumors-"

-Are you done?

"-and hand it all off to you, on location at the practice field beside TD Place in Landsdowne Park, home of the Ottawa Redblacks, to speak with running sensation Halfbark Clancy, who has shredded the record books his first two years pro in leading his team to two straight playoff appearances and a thrilling Grey Cup overtime victory to cap his 2016 rookie season, now looking beyond an undefeated pre-season toward the 2018 opener June 21 against Saskatchewan.

Halfbark, how are you feeling?"

Like seven times two minutes of my life just went by that I'll never see again.

"See, indeed. To continue, in spite of your spectacular success on the field, controversy continues to dog you. We've dug up a new list of complaints from your teammates and coaches-"

-And I thought I buried those for good.

"So you've read them?"

You understand I'm a dog?

"Then allow me to get your response to some:

Constantly late for practice and meetings."

So now I have to learn how to tell time? I refer you to my

previous question.

"Never showers after practice or games. Or before. Or ever."

Last I heard it was no crime to lick yourself clean.

"That's disgusting."

I smell cigar smoke, beer, Old Spice and sweat

through every pore of your skin. Clearly, I'm the

disgusting one.

"Ahem, clearly, indeed. Moving on: pees on teammates."

Yup. Every time we're in the huddle I can't help but think:

urine the huddle now!

"Licks sweat off their faces instead of using the water bottles."

They don't WANT me using the water bottles EITHER!

"Wolfs down food during team meals and then jumps onto table and uses puppy-dog eyes to beg scraps from other players."

Geez, you make that sound like a bad thing.

"Shredded the record books. Literally, this time."

Hey, throw me a bone. Everyone down to the ball boy were yapping of my shredding of the record books so when I went to see for myself I found them only slightly dog-eared and didn't want to disappoint them, so...did somebody mention a bone?

"And there's plenty more here. How do you feel overall about these 136 complaints?"

136?! That I'm glad I can't count.

"Count, indeed. One last question: What are the Redblacks'

chances of bringing the Grey Cup back to Ottawa this year?"

I believe that if our special teams perform as expected and

our defence remains aggressive, then with the playbook Coach Campbell has instituted and the entire offence on board, our chances are excellent.

"Wow, I was expecting a real sarcastic answer."

Well, I was expecting a real reporter.

"Thank you for this, Halfbark."

Yip. Now, I swear someone mentioned a bone.

Could not understand what insect has been nibbling at my Conker Tree Leafs. It turned out to be a Leafcutter Bee,

The Leaf-cutter Bee Megachile centuncularis is one of a number of small, solitary leaf-cutter bees. Leaf-cutter Bees nest in holes in plant stems, dead wood, cliffs or old walls, and can be seen in gardens. They famously cut discs out of leaves (they particularly like roses), gluing them together with saliva in order to build the 'cells' in which their larvae live. The larvae hatch and develop, pupating in autumn and hibernating over winter. The Leaf-cutter Bee is on the wing from April to August, and feeds solely on pollen and nectar.

I understand the importance of knowing your camera inside out and how making your own luck by planning and preparing for a composition can capture a moment as if it happened all by chance. I would like to tell the story of how this photograph was conceived, but unfortunately I cannot. This shot was a result of pure luck and a limited understanding of how to operate my new Canon DSLR! Of course, I was drawn to the scene by the dramatic sky and how the sun illuminated the kites when it broke through, but it wasn’t until I viewed the image on the computer did I realise what I had captured. It was the Lowry esque figures in the distance that made the photo for me and the longer I looked at the image the more silhouettes of people and animals could be seen. The image isn't technically perfect, the camera was set to take .JPEGs on automatic mode, the resulting image is more grainy than it needed to be and the kites aren't pin sharp.

Despite technical quality of the image, it has been one of the most successful pictures I have taken. I personally believe that I'm now a much better photographer than when I took this photograph, but it haunts me that if I knew then what a know now, it could have been so much better!

"I've never been so pleased to see a ceiling," he said.

Virtually the first words out of his mouth when my step-mum and I went in to see him after his operation late on Thursday evening.

After the relative high of leaving hospital and getting home for his birthday last week, this week was all about the build up to his carotid endarterectomy. And as the week drifted by, dad drifted a little further within himself; the risks and understandable fears of what was quickly galloping towards him looming large.

The morning of the operation began early, the hospital taxi duly arrived. My step-mum apparently offered to carry his bag. He politely declined, picked it up himself, strode off down the path, into the waiting car and away. My step-mum, slightly shocked, waved at the back of his head. He didn't say goodbye. He didn't look back. It's astonishing to think that could've been their last moment together.

Later he shrugged the moment off, "I don't like goodbyes. Besides, I was being positive. I had every intention of coming back." He's an unusual character all right, my dad.

The scar and associated bruising, as you can see, make him look the victim of a particularly brutal werewolf attack. However, given the relative invasiveness and delicacy of the operation, his recovery, again, is quietly remarkable; also a wonderful testament to the skills of the surgeon, Mr Neary. [Who, the day before, was so calm before the operation, he sat on the edge of the desk talking to my parents swinging his legs back and forth like a small boy.] You've got a special place in the hearts of this family, Mr Neary. Now, pull your socks up, tuck your shirt in and go tidy your room!

Love is like the open sea, and I wish you were here with me.

Listen.

I heard this song for the first time today driving with Mikey and I fell in love with it. <3 I wanted to use it for this photo. I had nothing like this in mind today, everywhere I went there were people. Too many people. So I left and went right back home.

The art show is this Wednesday, and today I reserved a nice open spot for all my photos to go on. I'm decorating it tomorrow during school.

Prom is next week! <3 You don't know my excitement right now. I'm getting a spray tan for it with Julia.

A little tip. When lying flat out on your stomach, on the edge of a cliff top, taking photo's of a rather scruffy looking flower/weed thingy,

a) be as quick as you can, and b) check the area for ant nests first!!!!

I understand that this is actually Spotted Knapweed. I also understand that ants can get absolutely everywhere in a very short space of time....
