Frequently Asked Questions about Braces
1. Why do people need braces?
There are many reasons one person may need braces: crowded teeth, missing teeth, extra teeth, jaws not growing right, bad overbite, open bite and the list continues. Not everyone needs braces if they go early enough to the orthodontists and have their teeth checked out.
2. What is the best age for braces?
There is NO best age for braces as all ages can be treated. However, the best time to be seen by an orthodontist is around 7 years old. At 7, any jaw growth problems can easily be corrected.
3. What is Phase I Treatment?
It means that if a problem exists (such as a bad overbite or a lot of crowding of teeth) treatment can or will be started as early as 7 or 8 to correct the problem. Most of the time, Phase I Treatment can save the patient from extraction of good permanent teeth, headgear or major jaw surgery.
4. What is Phase II Treatment?
Phase II Treatment is treatment with “braces”. Patients who have had Phase I Treatment to take care of a major problem (severe overbite or crowding) may need some type of Phase II Treatment with braces to detail their bite. However, not everyone needs Phase II Treatment. For someone who does not have Phase I Treatment but needs braces, they go directly to Phase II Treatment (that is, treatment with full braces).
5. How do braces work?
Braces work by putting light forces on teeth through special wires. Orthodontists also use special rubber bands to bring teeth into the right position. Treatment takes some time because teeth move slowly (only 1mm a month or less) into the right position.
6. Does it hurt to put braces on?
No, the braces are put on with special cement. However, in the beginning, teeth may become a little sore once they start moving.
7. How long does it take to put braces on?
The appointment to put the braces on is 1½ hours but to actually cement the braces in place will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
8. How long does treatment take?
Depending on the severity of a case, it could take as little as 6 weeks or up to 20-24 months for complete treatment. Once treatment is started, a patient would be seen every 8-12 weeks depending on their needs.
9. Do you talk funny with braces?
Just like anything new, it takes about a week to get used to the feeling. Most people adjust very well and have no problems.
10. Can you play sports with braces?
Yes, but with much care. You may need a mouth-guard to prevent injury and damage to the braces, your teeth and gums. We will gladly provide one for you.
11.Can I eat anything with braces?
No. There are some restrictions. We ask that you avoid sticky or hard foods (such as caramel, sticky gum, candy, popcorn, etc.). A little extra care with what you eat can go a long way and can prevent braces from breaking or becoming loose.
12.Can you get a “shock” if braces are touched with something metal (fork, spoon, etc.)?
Usually not.
13.Can the braces set off alarms in stores or airports?
No, the metal is stainless steel and does not set off alarms.
14. What are rubber bands and why do people need them?
Rubber bands bring the teeth together to make them fit perfectly. Most people need them at the end of treatment for a couple of months.
15. What are retainers and who needs them?
After treatment is finished, retainers are given to hold the teeth in position until they become used to their new “home”. All patients need retainers and Dr. Petrol will instruct you to wear them according to your personalized needs.

Wie bei einem naschhaften Kind sind meine Augen größer als mein Magen.
The ecological value of the term Nature is dangerously overrated, because Nature isn’t just a term – it’s something that happened to human-built space, demarcating human systems from Earth systems. Nature as such is a twelve-thousand-years old human product, geological as well as discursive. Its wavy elegance was eventually revealed as inherently contingent and violent, as when in a seizure one’s brain waves become smooth. Wash-rinse-repeat the agrilogistics and suddenly we reach a tipping point.
The Anthropocene doesn’t destroy Nature. The Anthropocene is Nature in its toxic nightmare form. Nature is the latent form of the Anthropocene waiting to emerge as a catastrophe.

The Lotos-eaters
BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
“Courage!” he said, and pointed toward the land,
“This mounting wave will roll us shoreward soon.”
In the afternoon they came unto a land
In which it seemed always afternoon.
All round the coast the languid air did swoon,
Breathing like one that hath a weary dream.
Full-faced above the valley stood the moon;
And like a downward smoke, the slender stream
Along the cliff to fall and pause and fall did seem.
A land of streams! some, like a downward smoke,
Slow-dropping veils of thinnest lawn, did go;
And some thro’ wavering lights and shadows broke,
Rolling a slumbrous sheet of foam below.
They saw the gleaming river seaward flow
From the inner land: far off, three mountain-tops,
Three silent pinnacles of aged snow,
Stood sunset-flush’d: and, dew’d with showery drops,
Up-clomb the shadowy pine above the woven copse.
The charmed sunset linger’d low adown
In the red West: thro’ mountain clefts the dale
Was seen far inland, and the yellow down
Border’d with palm, and many a winding vale
And meadow, set with slender galingale;
A land where all things always seem’d the same!
And round about the keel with faces pale,
Dark faces pale against that rosy flame,
The mild-eyed melancholy Lotos-eaters came.
Branches they bore of that enchanted stem,
Laden with flower and fruit, whereof they gave
To each, but whoso did receive of them,
And taste, to him the gushing of the wave
Far far away did seem to mourn and rave
On alien shores; and if his fellow spake,
His voice was thin, as voices from the grave;
And deep-asleep he seem’d, yet all awake,
And music in his ears his beating heart did make.
They sat them down upon the yellow sand,
Between the sun and moon upon the shore;
And sweet it was to dream of Fatherland,
Of child, and wife, and slave; but evermore
Most weary seem’d the sea, weary the oar,
Weary the wandering fields of barren foam.
Then some one said, “We will return no more”;
And all at once they sang, “Our island home
Is far beyond the wave; we will no longer roam.”
CHORIC SONG
I
There is sweet music here that softer falls
Than petals from blown roses on the grass,
Or night-dews on still waters between walls
Of shadowy granite, in a gleaming pass;
Music that gentlier on the spirit lies,
Than tir’d eyelids upon tir’d eyes;
Music that brings sweet sleep down from the blissful skies.
Here are cool mosses deep,
And thro’ the moss the ivies creep,
And in the stream the long-leaved flowers weep,
And from the craggy ledge the poppy hangs in sleep.”
II
Why are we weigh’d upon with heaviness,
And utterly consumed with sharp distress,
While all things else have rest from weariness?
All things have rest: why should we toil alone,
We only toil, who are the first of things,
And make perpetual moan,
Still from one sorrow to another thrown:
Nor ever fold our wings,
And cease from wanderings,
Nor steep our brows in slumber’s holy balm;
Nor harken what the inner spirit sings,
“There is no joy but calm!”
Why should we only toil, the roof and crown of things?
III
Lo! in the middle of the wood,
The folded leaf is woo’d from out the bud
With winds upon the branch, and there
Grows green and broad, and takes no care,
Sun-steep’d at noon, and in the moon
Nightly dew-fed; and turning yellow
Falls, and floats adown the air.
Lo! sweeten’d with the summer light,
The full-juiced apple, waxing over-mellow,
Drops in a silent autumn night.
All its allotted length of days
The flower ripens in its place,
Ripens and fades, and falls, and hath no toil,
Fast-rooted in the fruitful soil.
IV
Hateful is the dark-blue sky,
Vaulted o’er the dark-blue sea.
Death is the end of life; ah, why
Should life all labour be?
Let us alone. Time driveth onward fast,
And in a little while our lips are dumb.
Let us alone. What is it that will last?
All things are taken from us, and become
Portions and parcels of the dreadful past.
Let us alone. What pleasure can we have
To war with evil? Is there any peace
In ever climbing up the climbing wave?
All things have rest, and ripen toward the grave
In silence; ripen, fall and cease:
Give us long rest or death, dark death, or dreamful ease.
V
How sweet it were, hearing the downward stream,
With half-shut eyes ever to seem
Falling asleep in a half-dream!
To dream and dream, like yonder amber light,
Which will not leave the myrrh-bush on the height;
To hear each other’s whisper’d speech;
Eating the Lotos day by day,
To watch the crisping ripples on the beach,
And tender curving lines of creamy spray;
To lend our hearts and spirits wholly
To the influence of mild-minded melancholy;
To muse and brood and live again in memory,
With those old faces of our infancy
Heap’d over with a mound of grass,
Two handfuls of white dust, shut in an urn of brass!
VI
Dear is the memory of our wedded lives,
And dear the last embraces of our wives
And their warm tears: but all hath suffer’d change:
For surely now our household hearths are cold,
Our sons inherit us: our looks are strange:
And we should come like ghosts to trouble joy.
Or else the island princes over-bold
Have eat our substance, and the minstrel sings
Before them of the ten years’ war in Troy,
And our great deeds, as half-forgotten things.
Is there confusion in the little isle?
Let what is broken so remain.
The Gods are hard to reconcile:
‘Tis hard to settle order once again.
There is confusion worse than death,
Trouble on trouble, pain on pain,
Long labour unto aged breath,
Sore task to hearts worn out by many wars
And eyes grown dim with gazing on the pilot-stars.
VII
But, propt on beds of amaranth and moly,
How sweet (while warm airs lull us, blowing lowly)
With half-dropt eyelid still,
Beneath a heaven dark and holy,
To watch the long bright river drawing slowly
His waters from the purple hill—
To hear the dewy echoes calling
From cave to cave thro’ the thick-twined vine—
To watch the emerald-colour’d water falling
Thro’ many a wov’n acanthus-wreath divine!
Only to hear and see the far-off sparkling brine,
Only to hear were sweet, stretch’d out beneath the pine.
VIII
The Lotos blooms below the barren peak:
The Lotos blows by every winding creek:
All day the wind breathes low with mellower tone:
Thro’ every hollow cave and alley lone
Round and round the spicy downs the yellow Lotos-dust is blown.
We have had enough of action, and of motion we,
Roll’d to starboard, roll’d to larboard, when the surge was seething free,
Where the wallowing monster spouted his foam-fountains in the sea.
Let us swear an oath, and keep it with an equal mind,
In the hollow Lotos-land to live and lie reclined
On the hills like Gods together, careless of mankind.
For they lie beside their nectar, and the bolts are hurl’d
Far below them in the valleys, and the clouds are lightly curl’d
Round their golden houses, girdled with the gleaming world:
Where they smile in secret, looking over wasted lands,
Blight and famine, plague and earthquake, roaring deeps and fiery sands,
Clanging fights, and flaming towns, and sinking ships, and praying hands.
But they smile, they find a music centred in a doleful song
Steaming up, a lamentation and an ancient tale of wrong,
Like a tale of little meaning tho’ the words are strong;
Chanted from an ill-used race of men that cleave the soil,
Sow the seed, and reap the harvest with enduring toil,
Storing yearly little dues of wheat, and wine and oil;
Till they perish and they suffer—some, ’tis whisper’d—down in hell
Suffer endless anguish, others in Elysian valleys dwell,
Resting weary limbs at last on beds of asphodel.
Surely, surely, slumber is more sweet than toil, the shore
Than labour in the deep mid-ocean, wind and wave and oar;
O, rest ye, brother mariners, we will not wander more.

The final verse
Despite being the first title in the Yakuza franchise to be developed from the ground up on PlayStation 4 architecture, boasting the new and improved Dragon engine, Yakuza 6 isn’t the new start for the series that you would imagine it to be – it is actually a dramatic ending to the series as we know it. And despite all of the added gloss that comes with the jump to being fully next-gen, the game manages to maintain all of its character and madness – perhaps even packing in even more than usual.
Game: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega
Reviewed on: PlayStation 4 (Review code provided)
The Song of Life is the swansong for longtime protagonist Kazuma Kiryu – the Dragon of Dojima. Without giving too much of the story away, Kazuma has returned from paying his dues in prison only to find that his “adopted” daughter Haruka has gone missing and been involved in a tragic accident. He sets out to investigate and finds a lot more trouble than he anticipated – including being unwillingly dragged back into the Yakuza world that he was happy to have left, and discovering a baby that needs his protection. Having been embroiled in epic clan wars and power struggles over the years, this sixth title takes a surprising – and thoroughly refreshing – turn towards a much more personal story.
However if you are new to the series, Sega have done a commendable job recently to make everything far more accessible. Firstly, last year’s Yakuza Zero was a prequel which served as the perfect first stop for anyone who had yet to jump into the world of Yakuza. Then Yakuza Kiwami and the upcoming Kiwami 2 have re-made the first two games in the series, via the new engine. And even here, in the final part of Kiryu’s story, you could easily start from scratch, thanks to the reminisce options in the main menu – allowing you catch up with the most important past events via short digest essays.
With each entry into the series, the Yakuza games have seemingly got more complex and more over-the-top. Indeed, Song of Life is the first game since 2009 to feature only the one playable character, and as such it possesses a far more focused main story than the last three or four instalments. Each title has always felt jam-packed with things to do – be it the main story, side missions or the myriad of distractions scattered throughout – but sometimes that has been a real hinderance that has made each game feel bloated and unnecessarily drawn-out. By streamlining certain aspects, Yakuza 6 feels quicker, sleeker and much more compelling to play.
This is all helped greatly by the fact that the new game engine cuts out around ninety percent of the loading screens from earlier titles. No longer will there be loading screens for entering every single restaurant or shop – we instead get seamless transitions into combat or buildings, even allowing your fights to spill over into nearby convenience stores, if you decide to take it there. It makes each of the two main playable areas feel far more open, allowing quicker and easier exploration.
These two areas are the series regular Kamurocho (Sega’s take on the real-life Kabukicho red light district of Tokyo), and the new small town of Onomichi in Hiroshima. The two different areas provide a stark contrast between small-town and big city life, without ever becoming so large an open world so that one feels overwhelmed by the options of what to do or where to go. These locations each have a strong personality, and both are fascinating to explore. Kamurocho will feel familiar enough to series veterans, but also ever-evolving – with new sights, shops and experiences to uncover as you wander around. And in its own way Onomichi plays a perfect foil to that bustle and excess. A sleepy harbour town, harbouring a dangerous secret.
Without the aforementioned excessive loading times, combat feels more dynamic and immediate – you can be approached by enemies and thrown into battle at the drop of the hat, or choose to pick fights for yourself as you please. The fighting system has been streamlined much like other elements of the game. With only Kazuma to fight as, there is only one fighting style to learn and master – although your skills and attacks are all upgradeable with a fairly comprehensive XP levelling system. New finishing moves and context-specific attacks can be purchased, along with other social skills that will help with the variety of mini-games to take part in around each of the two locations.
A new ultra heat mode is built up through successful attacks and allows you to take advantage of high-powered moves and temporary invulnerability – both of which are highly useful for some of the boss battles or larger multi-opponent brawls that you will come up against as you progress. This can however make some of the supposedly harder fights feel a bit too easy, especially if you are quite invested in completing the many side quests which will help you to accrue XP, and therefore upgrades, much more quickly. There are three different difficulty settings in-game however, and these do really make a difference between just playing through to enjoy the story, or being seriously challenged by some gruelling fights.
I shouldn’t speak about the combat for too long however, as many of the most memorable moments through the history of the franchise have come from the crazy side quests and unique mini-games and distractions. Whereas the main story in Yakuza 6 is a very personal and emotional arc, the side quests always lend a deal of levity to proceedings. None are especially serious – many are laugh-out-loud funny. Whether you are chasing ghost pirates away from a local graveyard, helping a young girl find merchandise from her favourite singer or stopping a budding Youtuber from performing dangerous Jackass-style stunts, they offer short and amusing diversions.
There is also the usual selection of mini-games to occupy your time, such as Mah-Jong, Karaoke and baseball batting cages, but many new additions or tweaks to old favourites have been made to offer even more depth. The Sega gaming arcades not only offer classics such as Outrun and Hang-On, but now include full versions of Virtua Fighter 5 and Puyo Puyo (which can also both be played in multi-player mode with a friend). I was disappointed by the lack of UFO Catcher machines though – as in my own time in Japan I became quite addicted to these, and they have always been in past titles. Thankfully this is a minor inconvenience, far outweighed by the many other new additions.
The almost RTS-like Clan Creator mode sees Kazuma building up his own gang of locals to fight back against an evil group that is taking over the city. You recruit, level up and deploy your troops like a general, taking on waves of increasingly more difficult enemies. A baseball management mode offers a similar take on that favourite past-time, tasking you with building up a terrible local team into a force to be reckoned with. Even the regular Hostess clubs have been given an overhaul, featuring a new card-based conversation system whereby you can try to win the affections of your chosen maiden. Add in a rather risque live chat mini-game, a very arcade-like spear fishing mode and a Cat Cafe which Kiryu is himself responsible for populating with an army of kitties, and there is plenty to keep you occupied aside from the main storyline – if you so wish.
A quick mention should also be made to the improved visual fidelity of the whole experience. Whilst there is a massive gulf between the cookie-cutter NPC faces and the featured main characters, there is a marked improvement in textures all-around. This is illustrated best on the rather large selection of characters who are modelled on real-life actors. Beat Takeshi plays a fairly large supporting role – in his usual understated, yet endearingly eccentric way – along with several other recognisable Japanese actors. One street gang is made up almost entirely of real New Japan Pro Wrestling superstars, including current IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada. These faces are all very detailed and expressive, which when coupled with the more fluid animations and higher-resolution environments, make Yakuza 6 a more authentic virtual trip to Japan than ever before.
VERDICT
It will always be difficult to sell a sequel like this to gamers who have never before dipped their toe into the series. It would be a mistake to be put off by the large number six that you see on the box though people, this is one of the most captivating and content-rich adventures that I have played in quite some time – and can be enjoyed thoroughly even with no prior knowledge of the story. With so many side quests and mini-games, pacing has always been an issue in past Yakuza games, but the absorbing nature of the main plot made The Song of Life feel like it never had time to slow down. By paring away unnecessary additional playable characters, disposing of multiple fighting styles and focusing on a more character-driven story than prior entries, we are left with a far more compelling tale – one in which I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. Whilst this may be the last outing for legendary hero Kazuma Kiryu, the future is certainly bright for the Yakuza franchise as a whole.

Dear reddit RDH’s,
I’m writing to you all as a wife, mom, and also as a fellow state board licensed professional as a registered nurse.
Last Spring my husband of 15 years had an affair with a dental hygienist at the dental practice we have been going to for 10 years in our small community, “we” is me, husband, daughter (now college grad), and teen son. We actually chose the practice as we me dentist at middle school activity- our daughters were both involved – not close friends, but continued familiar relationship throug HS graduation.
He went in for routine appointment, she routinely talks about bad marriage relationship (of 16 years) ‘he’s controlling, suspicious”, etc… My husband is police officer “ call me if I can help”- not in an innocent manner- clear boundary break. She leaves next day to “work on relationship with husband” on advice from pastor- to Mexico. Next day begin to text my husband flirty messages, then suggestive messages bikini pics, then half nude, then nudes. She’s gets home 1 week later and he is ready for divorce.
My marriage is not the concern of my post. I have had minimal contact with this woman in 9 months since I became aware of affair. I doubt my marriage is going to survive this affair, and I will continue to grieve this as time moves on. As a nurse, I would be horrified and quick to judge and point out to any of my coworker/friends how inappropriate and unprofessional this behavior was/is, and I am tempted to inform the dentist that she works with. I have struggled with my decision as I never wanted it to be made out of anger towards her because the responsibility is and always has been on my husband. However, she has also had contact with our 2 children for more than 10 years, and me- and her lack of judgement concerns me. I would never attend this practice again as long as she is still employed there, and would certainly never have my kids go there. I’m tempted to tell dentist this, and also that I will not hesitate to tell everyone we know in our small town the above story and recommend they take their dental concerns elsewhere. What do you all think?

It’s a Wednesday morning at the Family Health and Birth Center (FHBC), a prenatal clinic and birth center housed within a larger federally qualified health center called Community of Hope. The clinic is located in a shopping mall, across the street from a Safeway grocery store, next door to an Aldi store, and situated in a predominantly Black and low-income part of the city, that, like most of Washington, D.C., is rapidly changing. The lot on which the clinic stands is set to become condos, and signs outside the parking area proudly announce that fact.
But today, seven Black pregnant women have gathered in a classroom for their two-hour prenatal care group, facilitated by FHBC’s group care coordinator, Paris Carter, a Black woman in her late 20s with long braids and a shaved undercut. As the women snack on fruit, yogurt, and muffins, they paint the plaster casts of their pregnant bellies that they made at the last session. Beyoncé plays in the background.
This group is one of three or four that meet each week at FHBC and represents a core part of the prenatal care model gaining traction nationally, called CenteringPregnancy, which recommends this kind of setting and provides training and materials to facilitators. In the midst of a national dialogue about the health of pregnant and parenting Black women, FHBC’s work shows what it looks like to provide prenatal care that significantly improves outcomes for vulnerable populations. The clinic has seen healthier moms and babies than the statistics for the region have shown, offering a model for others on what it takes to improve health and wellness for Black women and children.
All of the women in the group Rewire.News observed were close to term, around 37 weeks pregnant. Three have children with them, all little boys between 13 months and a few years. One boy watches a show on his mom’s phone while munching on fruit. Another spends most of the session painting his mom’s belly cast with messy streaks of black and blue paint.
The two hours the group is together is loosely held, with women arriving at different times, and multiple activities taking place at once. Halfway through, for about 30 minutes of the session, Carter walks through a PowerPoint presentation on infant sleep safety and how to avoid sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Each woman also spends about ten minutes with Rebekah Schmerber, a white nurse midwife who does belly checks behind a screen in the corner throughout the session. She takes their vitals, weighs them, and then has each woman lie down on a massage table next to a wall draped with a colorful batik cloth. As she examines the belly and uses a Doppler to listen to the fetus’ heartbeat, she addresses any questions and concerns the woman might have.
Mercedez Milling-Robinson finished the Centering program last year when her daughter, her second child, was born. “I just had such a good time,” she recounted about her experience with Centering in a recent phone call with Rewire.News. For her first child, she received care from an obstetrician at another local health provider and was really unhappy with the care she received. Her appointments with her OB were really impersonal, she said, and her desire for an unmedicated labor wasn’t respected. During her delivery, she described, “they were telling me … stories about women who wanted to go natural pulling the IVs out and acting crazy to try and scare me out of my decision.” In spite of that, Milling-Robinson had delivered her son without medication. When she got pregnant again two years later, she sought out care at FHBC, which she had known about, but had been closed when her son was born.
She only had good things to say about her experience at FHBC. “I love their energy and their vibe,” she described. “My first time meeting Ebony [Marcelle, director of midwifery at the clinic] was the day I was giving birth to my daughter. She came in and fit right in and was really encouraging.” One of the things that was challenging about her first child’s delivery was that she felt like the nurses and OB were forcing her to push when she wasn’t ready. Because of that experience, she explained, “with my daughter I didn’t know when to push or when not to push.” Instead she recounted Marcelle saying: “‘You know when to push’—giving me back what [the first providers] took from me.”
Historically, the CenteringPregnancy model starts with monthly group meetings early in pregnancy. At FHBC they start later, around 20-24 weeks, but meet biweekly until the end of the pregnancy. The complete program is ten sessions, and each session covers a different topic related to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. The model is touted by health-care providers, researchers, and advocates for improving maternal health, and Marcelle said FHBC’s outcomes have been significantly better than average in D.C. Among the 2017 group, only three had issues with preterm labor or low infant birth weight—two problems that disproportionately affect Black women. In 2016, the preterm birth rate for Black women nationally was 14 percent. In 2012, the rate of infants born below a healthy weight to Black mothers was also about 14 percent.
Approximately 391 women came to Community of Hope for prenatal care in 2017, and 35 percent of those clients participated in the Centering groups. Among all the prenatal patients seen, only 5.8 percent gave birth preterm, and 4.6 percent had infants born underweight. There were no infant or maternal deaths among any of the clients seen at the practice. For context, a 2015 study showed that Washington, D.C., has the highest infant mortality rate of any capital city in the developed world. The maternal mortality rate is also twice the national average, and between 2014 and 2016, 75 percent of those deaths were Black women.
FHBC has seen a lot of change in the 18 years since its founding by Ruth Lubic, a white nurse midwife who received a MacArthur Fellowship that she used to fund what was then called the DC Developing Families Center. While the intention has always been to serve women living in the vicinity of the center, how that service is provided has shifted greatly over time. Much of the recent shifts can be attributed to Marcelle’s leadership.
One of the things that makes FHBC’s model unique, said Marcelle, is that it is part of a larger federally qualified health center. Not only does that provide an important source of revenue via federal funding, but it offers her clients wraparound services for the whole family. “What it allowed me to do was build a program that I think is the answer for Black women,” said Marcelle, who first connected with FHBC as a volunteer in 2002. In 2008, she came back to FHBC as a nurse midwife, where she stayed for two years before leaving to work at Washington Hospital Center. She returned to FHBC in March 2015 as the midwifery director.
“It’s lovely having family practice providers here. We have dental at two of our other sites. We have a housing arm. We have healthy start and integrated behavioral health.” This comprehensive care model impacts the health of an entire family, explained Marcelle. “It’s fantastic. If I have a patient come in and her partner looks sick, I can get him an appointment. Your grandmother is sick? We can see her.”
There are two other key elements of Marcelle’s model, which I found in my reporting on Jennie Joseph’s practice in Orlando, Florida, as well. One, the majority of her staff are women of color. Marcelle recounted that even while interviewing with the CEO, she foreshadowed this change when she was asked what she would need to be successful. At the time, the birth center was closed, and the practice was only seeing a limited number of prenatal clients, staffed by just two midwives, both white. “Complete trust,” Marcelle recalled responding. “You’re going to have let me do things you don’t understand. You’re going to have to let me make decisions.”
Marcelle also moved to soften the center’s approach with clients—another key element that is part of how Joseph’s clinic works. Joseph heavily emphasizes respect and understanding for her patients as soon as they step foot in the clinic, and Marcelle is equally passionate about that.
“They come very defensive because they’ve had bad experiences in the past, so we also have to restructure their concept of care,” said Marcelle. “We have some patients who just come to hang out, probably because we are the only people who are super nice to them.”
This softer approach is reflected in a change she made regarding the center’s late policy. When she came on as director, the policy mandated that if you were ten minutes late for your appointment you had to reschedule. Marcelle recalled: “I knew I had a problem when it was 4:10 and the midwife had already moved her to no show, and the patient shows up at 4:12.” Within a few months of taking over as director, Marcelle shifted the policy. “We have to see late patients,” she explained. “Some of these women are taking multiple buses, sacrificing [by accepting] unsafe child care, all kinds of shenanigans to get here—we have to see them.”
The official policy now is 15 minutes, but if you’re pregnant or with a newborn, Marcelle said you will get seen, no matter what. Millings-Robinson remarked on this as well, sharing that the staff will always work with her, even if she’s late.
When asked what really stands out about the center’s environment, she answered without hesitation: “They don’t forget a face or a name. I’m able to talk to them, and they are really excited about what they are doing.”
The clinic represents a bright spot in an otherwise grim situation. Advocates and journalists have come to call D.C. a “maternity desert” after two hospital labor and delivery ward closures last summer, limiting options for people living in some of D.C.’s lowest-income areas. Newsweek reported in 2015, “infants born into the city’s poorest area, Ward 8 in the southeast, are 10 times more likely to die than children in Ward 3, Washington’s affluent northwest.”
The FHBC is located in Ward 5, not far from one of the closed labor and delivery wards, and also has a location in Ward 8, where it offers prenatal care and where some of the Centering pregnancy groups meet. The vast majority of its clients are Black, and it accepts all insurance plans, including Medicaid. Most of the center’s clients are on public insurance.
A room inside the Family Health and Birth Center. (Miriam Zoila Pérez)
Marcelle has big dreams for the birth center. For starters, she would like to increase the number of women giving birth at the center each month. Milling-Robinson wanted to deliver her daughter at the birth center, but a suspected fetal heart murmur later in pregnancy required her to deliver at the hospital instead. Complications are common, shared Marcelle.
The majority of FHBC’s patients deliver not at the birth center, but at Washington Hospital Center, a nearby hospital where FHBC midwives can attend to them during their deliveries, according to Marcelle. Between two and four women give birth at the birth center each month, she said.
Pregnant with her third child and due in January 2019, Milling-Robinson has returned to the center for prenatal care and is hoping to give birth there this time.
In 2017, according to statistics Marcelle provided to Rewire.News, 137 women came through the Centering program, representing 78 percent of the delivery clients seen by the nurse midwives at FHBC. Marcelle’s goal for this year is to increase that by threefold or fourfold, up to 15 births each month. She is working through ideas for how to get her clients on board with an unmedicated birth, including working more closely with Mamatoto Village, a local perinatal support organization, since wanting an epidural is a big reason her clients who aren’t facing complications choose the hospital instead.
Marcelle brings a unique perspective to the midwifery world because she’s practiced in hospitals with high-risk deliveries and in the birth center, where women deliver in rooms decorated like a bedroom at a bed and breakfast. “I can definitely whip out the rebozo [a garment used in indigenous midwifery practice] and be crunchy and granola, but I can [also] manage your twins with pre-eclampsia.”
There are only a handful of birth centers that are situated within federally qualified health centers, and that alone is what makes the center sustainable as compared with other clinics. But even Marcelle’s center is facing uncertainty—its lease is up in 2020, when its building will become another luxury condo development in a city where these developments abound.
The center is looking for a new space, Marcelle said, but so far hasn’t found anything affordable and in the right location. It won’t be an easy hurdle given the realities of real estate in the rapidly gentrifying D.C., but Marcelle is determined to charge ahead and continue offering something truly unique in the midst of a challenging landscape for Black women.
Carter, whom Marcelle hired two years ago, was actually a patient at FHBC ten years ago when she had her son at age 20. She recalled what it felt like to arrive at FHBC for prenatal care after an unsatisfactory experience at her first prenatal care provider. “Besides the front door, there [were] no locked doors here. It felt like the staff knew everybody. It didn’t feel so sterile. I just liked how I was addressed here. It was kind of, ‘Ooh, hey, what’s up?’ instead of it being very straightforward and strict.” Marcelle was actually Carter’s midwife and even attended the birth of her son Kingston, who is now 9.
“It was really cool seeing other moms like me who were pregnant,” Carter said. “[They] lived where I lived, lived how I lived, looked like me, were dealing with some of the same issues as me. It felt like home.”

The time has finally come to find out more about Charlie. Here are her recent Wisdom Panel test results, and what it was like to do a dog DNA test!
Full disclosure: I was going to talk more about my plans for the guest bedroom today. But Charlie had an injury over the weekend*, and she’s been farting up a stinky storm today, so she’s more than a little on my mind. So, just for the heck of it, I decided to move this post up and share the results of her DNA testing.
*The Charlie Injury Story: Charlie hates her nails being trimmed. As in, FLIPS OUT if they are touched and therefore has a red flag on her file so vets/groomers won’t touch her. So, to help keep her nails in check, I have to use alternative natural ways, such as her nightly walks on asphalt in the neighborhood, letting her dig, and running around on a hard surface at doggie day camp. Unfortunately, Charlie still gets herself into trouble every now and then (like trying to climb my backyard fence) and split one of her nails on Saturday. Poor baby. It’s been treated and she’s on antibiotics and she’s back to her old self, so don’t worry! I’ve got a watchful eye on her until it’s fully healed.
Why Charlie Was Tested
It all started last fall, when I swabbed her gums using a kit one night. I was sorting through stuff to donate to Goodwill after the guest bedroom clean-out, and K brought the kit down in one of the boxes. In truth, I’d never really planned on getting her tested. At least, not with my own money; I thought it was kind of a waste. As long as she’s happy and healthy, why bother, right?
Note: contains affiliate links.
She is such a unique-looking animal that people seemed to love guessing at her breed. And since the actual truth made no difference to any of those things, I never considered it important.
But, a few Christmases ago, my sister Emily (the owner of 3 mutts herself) decided my reasoning was stupid and bought me (Charlie? us?) a DNA testing kit by Wisdom Panel.
I forgot about it for a few years, which is how it popped back up on my radar as I was sorting through things from guest bedroom storage. So, basically, I finally buckled. I swabbed her cheek and gums (much to her reluctance, but it was a simple-step process to complete) and sent off the kit. A few weeks ago, I got back her results.

MUTT!
I know… you’re shocked, right?
via: giphy.com
Here’s the actual breakdown of Charlie’s ancestry chart, which I honestly DID find interesting:
Overall Thoughts on Her Results
I always suspected she might be a Boxer mix, especially because she’s so solid/muscular, loves to “box” people (gets on her hind legs and sort of paws/punches at you, right about crotch level), and “kidney beans” (shakes her tail from side to side that causes her whole body to twist like a kidney bean), all characteristics I’ve seen in other Boxer mixes in the past.
Related: Charlie in the snow
The White Swiss Shepherd and Cattle Dog makes sense with her crazy ears. It also explains her high energy level (even though K’s dog, Stella, is around the same age, Charlie seems way more like a puppy in comparison). And the Chow part explains her tongue’s black splotches! As for the rest? Even the DNA company was like “shit if we know… your guess is as good as ours!” Roughly 37% of her test results came back inconclusive enough that there’s no one breed it points to.

So, there you have it! My precious girl has a little more known about her. Of course, I still think it really doesn’t make any difference, especially since I enjoy letting people speculate (and those of you who have emailed me photos of your own pups thinking they are the same breed or similar, I still welcome you to do so; I never get tired of puppy pics!). Mom and Em were happy to know the results, too. Were her results what you thought it would be??? Have you ever had your pup tested? What did you think?
P.S. Just so there’s no confusion, this was not sponsored.

Anyway, I think I will restart my work with the Illustrated Botanical Dictionary. I am going to capture subjects in daylight with color photography; I will compile them into the Illustrated Botanical Dictionary. For that, they must be color photographs. This is because I would like to completely cast off any trace of the hand that remains with the darkroom process of black-and-white photography. The hands themselves have made the art. The hands are the others within oneself. But of course the hands are the self. Manipulation and a thing manipulated by the hands are still an extension of the hands. The world is manipulated by the hands. My Illustrated Botanical Dictionary will come to exist by cleanly severing all ties with hand-manipulation. In that sense, the color photograph is already in the other world. Release the shutter once, and everything comes to an end

Sound Tribe Sector 9, more commonly known as STS9, began in Atlanta in 1996 in the midst of the rise of the mid-1990s “jam band” scene, but since their inception, there hasn’t been a category that fully encapsulated just what the band was about. And even though mixing a live band sound with electronic elements has become increasingly common on the festival scene, there still isn’t a band that is quite like STS9. When meeting up with the band I asked them about how they felt about the rise in having more live elements being introduced into EDM and if they felt like they were a big part of inspiring this wave.
“It seems as such.” replies a laughing Zach. “We feel grateful. A lot of our contemporaries from Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob and I think the list kind of goes on [have spoken about the inspiration STS9 had on their sound]. There’s a new artist every day saying kind of ’We do this because our first kind of gateway into this kind of world was STS9.’ So you know we feel very grateful and blessed to be a part of a movement.”
Movement, collection, tribe. These are the words that are used to describe the band. Throughout our interview they often refer to themselves as being a smaller part of a larger picture. The vision of STS9 and the way they see themselves and speak about their place in the world around them is very humble. Part of what has made this band almost impossible to categorize and definitely impossible to replicate is the band’s core belief of never categorizing themselves. While preparing for my interview, I came across the very first STS9 interview published. The interview (also with Zach and Jeffrey) was conducted by Bob Wiely after a show on Feb 26, 2000 and published by Surrender To The Flow magazine.
Bob Wiely: How do you feel about the term “Organic Techno” being used to describe your music?
Zach: I don’t think anything should really be labeled. I think it’s a good term in the fact that its not what we set out to do… but its kinda what has cosmically happened just through playing music and listening to the connection of it. I guess kinda organic techno, but I don’t know if I would use techno.
Jeffrey: It’s not bad, it doesn’t hurt me. It’s so much more then that… that’s just an element of it.
Bob Wiely: What would you label it?
Jeffrey: That’s hard, it’s different every night. Its true fusion I guess, without too many tags. It’s just whatever comes.
Zach: I have a hard time describing it. How would you describe it? It’s almost like classical music in the fact that we have songs that are 35 minutes long, like a lot of other “jam bands” and the fact that they are not so much jams but movements, understand? For example tonight we opened up with the second part of the last song. Everything is really interchangeable, like our song frequency. Labeling just turns me off. We read articles and people say just that “fusion, techno, blah blah blah¦” and we’ve not yet come up with what it is and can be instead of using other genres not that we are creating our own it’s like you have to go see it instead of just reading about it. We’re still working on our label I guess.
During our interview, as we began speaking about how their sound has been perceived and labeled over the years. Zach shared what he felt was the best description of their music ever told to him in an interview, “We still use this one to this day, if we’re talking retro. One of my favorite quotes from an interview was when an interviewer tried to explain [our sound] ‘Going to see STS9 is like driving down the road at a hundred miles an hour with your hair caught on fire.’ I can get that.”
And even though electronic music fans (perhaps more than fans of any other style of music) take pride in categorizing the music they are listening too and forming their own communities based on which of the genres they listen too, STS9 seems to be the exception to the rule.
Music isn’t the only medium in which STS9 has pushed the use of the available technology as it has evolved over the years. When it comes to the internet, the concept of social media and using technology to interact with their fans and help build connections amongst them STS9 was also way ahead of their time. Way before artist began using Facebook groups to create interactive fan clubs and even before MySpace was founded in 2003, STS9 used their website as a primitive social media platform. As early as 2000, STS9 fans could go to the band’s official webpage to connect with the tribe in a forum-like section of the webpage called: the Lowdown.
During my interview with Zach and Jeffrey, I set the intention of really reminding the band about the early days, get an idea of how they have changed throughout the years, and try to get a sneak-peak into how they may evolve in the future. Looking at the early editions of their website to now, one of the biggest changes seems to have come in the way the band presents itself to the world. As ahead of their time the band was, first glance of STS9’s website presents a lot of information and ideas that are fascinating and interesting, but ultimately distracting from the site’s role in promoting the band’s music.
Early on in the band’s career, STS9 was steadfast in presenting themselves as an artistic collective at the forefront of musical experimentation. The Mayan culture played a heavy part in the creation of this atmosphere. According to early editions of STS9’s website, the ancient Mayans thrived in the ninth sector of 13 in the middle of the Central American rain forest. While Europe was in the Dark Ages, the Mayan culture mapped the stars and calibrated harmonic frequencies to converge the Earth toward resonance. And it was this idea of harmonic frequencies that inspired Sound Tribe Sector 9.
A visit to the band’s official site today is a very different experience than it was in 2000. There are no references to the Mayan culture and perhaps more sadly, the Lowdown has been removed as well. When I asked Zach and Jeffrey about the links on their old site and if the Mayan’s still had a presence in their life and music, Zach and Jeffrey were both quick to jump in on the somewhat touchy subject with Zach saying “I mean yeah,” as Jeffrey simultaneously said “In its own way.” Zach and Jeffrey both took turns sharing their thoughts on the real influence the Mayan philosophy had on the band, and why it has taken a smaller role as time has passed. Jeffrey said, “I think it became less cultural and more planetary. [In the beginning] it was kind of our gateway into just trying to understand [our place in the world]. That influence was a part of our youth, and expression, and is still part of us. Just not as overt.”
Zach adds, “Yeah, I think it [the Mayan influences to their site and music] kind of originated because of the lunar calendar. The concept, not even really a concept, but the feeling [of the Mayan culture] was that idea of being more harmonious with planet Earth. And just to expand on what Jeffrey was saying, at that time in our youth we were kind of bombarded with ‘time is money.’ From management to record labels, [Every conversation was] ‘money, money, money.’ And the concept of harmonious ‘time is art’ and ‘use your time just to make art, be creative, and be authentic in that way.’ I think that that was the biggest takeaway and some of the resonance that we had with that whole thing.”
Jeffrey continuing his thought adds, “And being introduced to Jose Arguelles [founder of Planet Art Network and the Foundation for the Law of Time], getting to know him, and to have his samples in Artifact. So to have that connection was great … Honest answer, it [the Mayan influences] became such a big thing about what people are talking about. I think for us it became ‘Time is Art’ and that was the big takeaway. We spend our time creating. And [while that] was a big inspiration, to be so labeled and with a cultural thing… I think we just kind of took that to a more personal level. We want people talking about the music, and when you’re an original authentic band it’s hard for people to understand.” In order to clarify things, the band has made a concerted effort to make sure the music is the main focus: of the official website, the live shows, and even the conversation. “We promote the Tribe as art – that’s the vision,” Zach says. “We’re more inspired than we’ve ever been. It’s like a river, and when it flow’s it really flows. And right now we’re flowing.”
One thing hasn’t changed over the band’s 20 years of making and performing music, and that is the emphasis on not only creating art but creating art as a family. As a tribe. The band held their first ever festival, Wave Spell Live, in the small northern California town of Belden last August. During a solo DJ session, Zach brought a very special surprise guest artist to the stage. His daughter, Isis.
When asked if she would be joining them in the future Zach gave the enthusiastic answer, “Absolutely! Yeah. We have a lot of plans. A lot of plans. A lot of fun things. My daughter is fierce. It was actually her idea. I’m just the vessel for her right. To support her in her aspirations. It’s insane. She’s six. And the reason she didn’t come down [for the Los Angeles show] is she’s auditioning for Alice in Wonderland. She has a voice lesson two times a week, and then she’s in this program called All About Theater and she wants to be the Queen of Hearts. That’s her goal. She’s fierce. We’re trying to raise a strong child.”

In spite of the exciting prospects on bringing his little girl into the STS9 fold, Zach isn’t unaware of the influence festival culture has and foresees a time when her presence in the scene probably won’t always be as innocent as jumping onstage and jamming with her father’s band. During the interview, Zach was laughing and began to cover his eyes with his hands as if to block out a future mental image when saying “She’s gonna be the 18-year-old at the festivals. Naked, hula hooping and someone’s going to be saying ‘she has a father’. And I’ll have to say ‘that’s me.’” And while Zach may not be looking forward to that particular scenario, the main thing I took away from the anecdote was that STS9 plans to stick around, creating art, and sharing the vision of the tribe for many years to come.

Dulquer Salmaan to debut in Bollywood with Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar
While he played the quintessential chocolate boy in OK Kanmani, the original version of the Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor’s romantic drama Ok Jaanu, Dulquer Salmaan is now gearing up for Bollywood. Born to Malayalam superstar Mammootty, the South actor is all set to play the lead in Ronnie Screwvala’s upcoming production.
The yet to be titled film will also see Mithila Palkar who gained fame with the TV show ‘Girl In The City’ and also web series, playing the female lead. She was earlier seen in the Nikhil Advani film Katti Batti. Besides the duo, it will star Irrfan Khan, although the character details of all of them are currently kept under wraps. The said film also marks the directorial debut of Akarsh Khurana with it being scripted by Hussain Dalal.
Reportedly, Dulquer Salmaan wasn’t the first choice for the role. Abhishek Bachchan was initially approached to play the part but it seems that the actor couldn’t allot dates because the schedule was clashing with his other film, JP Dutta’s Paltan which has already gone on floors.
As for the story of this untitled film, we hear that it is about a road trip of Dulquer Salmaan and Irrfan Khan who play friends. According to recent reports, the film is scheduled to go on floor by the end of August and it will extensively be shot in Kerala.

Wolfenfiiiiiiiine
Game: Wolfenstein 2: The New ColossusDeveloper: Machine GamesPublisher: Bethesda SoftworksReviewed on: PS4 (Review copy provided)
Captain ‘BJ’ Blazkowicz, star of Wolfenstein’s newest reboot, is not a great protagonist on paper. He has an annoyingly square head, like a child’s drawing of Superman, and consistently speaks so gruffly as to be borderline unintelligible, as if words just get tangled up in all his testosterone. It’s like Solid Snake and Christian Bale’s Batman had a really phlegmy child. He’s nothing new. Big, handsome white guys with guns and difficulty conveying emotions are not original in the world of videogames.
Ol’ BJ has one redeeming feature though. He properly hates Nazis, like an X-rated Captain American pre-heel turn. I don’t mean ‘nazi’ in the way your mate Karen from Twitter uses it to describe everyone who disagrees with her because she once followed a vegan account for a week and thinks she’s basically a communist for voting Labour. I don’t even mean a pejorative term for people who point out you can’t use basic English so you try to cover up for it by comparing your corrector to the literal third reich. No, I mean proper Nazis.
It used to always be that Nazis were a pretty stock villain. You knew where you were with a Nazi. Even Britain, a country that can’t make a single decision that doesn’t send us further down shit creek at the moment, used to be united behind one thing; Nazis are shit, mate. Recently things got a bit muddied, though. Nazis got twitter and tiki torches and started acting like they were real people who should be listened to. Some people got confused by this; are Nazis human after all? Should we hear them out?
But Nazis aren’t for listening to, lads. Nazis are for punching.
Enter Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. Much of the build-up to this has been Bethesda happily trolling alt-right mouth-breathers online through their promo materials and trailers, so much so that these stings may have even stolen some attention away from the game itself. The rebooted Wolfenstein series is not only here to remind everyone what Nazis are for, though. I fully expected predecessor The New Order to be a by-numbers FPS, like CoD: Steampunk Edition. What I found instead was a game full of fun ideas and set-pieces with a strong identity, trying it’s best to do something with a fairly tired genre. Picking up directly after this, The New Colossus sees our man BJ not feeling exactly 100%. He’s frail, literally in a wheelchair at one point, and having quite a serious think about death and that.
I want to start with the less enjoyable parts of the game. This is because Wolfy 2 is indeed (spoiler alert) a great experience worthy of attention; a single player game (something that’s practically on the endangered species list these days) that isn’t demanding any money from you during the gameplay, and with a strong story and excellent characters.
First of all… the game is hard. Some of this is undoubtedly intentional; Blazkowicz believes he is on his way out from the off, and he’s a weaker soldier for it for a significant part of the game. Find yourself in a room full of Nazis and it’s easy to come a cropper unless you’re super careful with cover, which is at odds with the game constantly urging you on to be gung-ho and batter every Nazi as soon as they appear. The aforementioned wheelchair section, in which your turning speed is reduced and you’re not able to hold a gun ready at all times, is the FIRST SECTION. At least give us a warm-up here, guys. Without ruining things, he does regain some of his old strength in later parts, but by then the enemies have gotten a little stronger as well.
Some of those enemies are far tougher than they have any right to be, too. Despite wearing minimal armour, some standard-issue assailants can take a serious amount of bullets before they take a nap, while some of the bigger behemoths are total bullet sponges. Add into that the airborne drones that dart around unpredictably during every mass brawl and things can get frustrating quite quickly, even on a lower difficulty setting. To confuse things further, the game decides not to opt for the mechanic most of it’s cousins use these days; slowing down time while you choose your next gun on the weapon wheel selector. That said, you can now use the weapon wheel to dual-wield whatever you’re carrying, which is a nice touch, but a few seconds grace to navigate the sometimes sticky gun selector would have been quite nice, thanks.
What’s great about those enemies, though, is how you can just completely avoid some of them. On occasion, you’ll be confronted by a huge, Nazi behemoth robot, only to realise you can run away from it easily because they’re big and slow. I really liked having the choice that most people would probably make when confronted with a 20ft right-wing robot; to get out of there and leave it to whatever it was doing before you turned up.
The stealth doesn’t quite add up, either. On occasion while sneaking up behind a grunt they’d turn at the very last second, and spot me for all of a millisecond before I busted them up with my hatchet, which is an animation triggered by a single button press. Yet in that wordless moment they would somehow be able to raise an alarm that summons Nazis faster than a woman having an opinion online. It didn’t really wash, and seems quite unforgiving in what was already quite a tricky experience. Despite it’s protestations, Wolfy 2 is definitely a shooter; the stealth is there, but it may as well not be.
Finally, there is BJ’s vocal cords. He’s so low and gruff it’s unintentionally comical; mid-action quips and lines may as well just be fucking gargled for all the sense they make, particularly when fighting for decibels against the game’s improbably loud techno soundtrack. When the scenes arise in which the mother of his unborn children says she can’t understand him, I think she means emotionally, but she may well be talking about his appalling annunciation. Stop mumbling, you square-headed prick.
But that is the negative done with. I promise. It’s all downhill from here, or uphill depending on how you read that analogy. Because the characters and casting (even BJ with his RIDICULOUS voice) are wonderful. Following on from my time in The New Order, I chose the Fergus timeline, and was thrilled to have the hardest yet most nonchalant Scotsman (quite the achievement) in all of videogames back in my life. All of the main cast are voiced and acted beautifully, and the culmination of every caustic first meeting is a solid group of personalities you’ll miss once the credits roll.
Frau Engel takes the role of main target this time. Right from the first encounter she’s established as a completely hateful psychopath, and this is where the new Wolfy’s have always done brilliantly. They’re more than adept at eliciting the perfect emotional response; rather than being presented with cookie-cutter villains who you have to kill because the developers say so, you *really* want to take these people down, and that’s the difference between being propelled through a game rather than being dragged through it. This is built upon even further with flashbacks to BJ’s childhood, one of which was distressing in a way only cruelty to animals can be. These flashback sections are surprisingly good; rather than being poorly-aimed schmaltz they’re well acted and often funny insights into what made BJ the world’s premiere Nazi killer. Indeed, there’s even delightful new characters being introduced 4/5 of the way through, a particular favourite introduction of mine involving a fist-fight and a sniping session to the sounds of jazz clarinet.
And even beyond the characters themselves, the game oozes personality all over the gaffe. Set in an alternative reality where Hitler and his gang of pricks won the second world war, forcing the USA to surrender by way of an atom bomb, it’s a little steam-punk in places, the mesh of an old world with as-yet unknown technology. Feeling somewhat under the weather, Blazkowicz can only get around by the aid of a suit of armour that looks like something from Silent Hill in 2049. There are big, far-right robots that resemble Warhammer’s Ultramarines to contend with on a regular basis. The game is also bizarrely crude and humorous at points, something much needed in amongst all the dying and reflections on mortality. Fairly happy to have you wading through hoards of genocidal maniacs one minute and make obscene references the next, it’s a jarring sense of humour that is too rarely seen in the often po-faced world of FPS. The diaries and passing dialogue you find amongst the environments is often hilarious and most importantly brief; nobody wants to read a four page extract from a journal during a shoot-em-up, but a brief excerpt here and there to build the world is largely welcome.
The problem with the world of Wolfenstein 2 is that the good bits make the bad bits far more apparent. For example, an area many of you may have seen is the Roswell town setting. Y’know, it’s the bit from the footage where everything looks like a perfect 50’s sitcom town, all Cadillacs and ice cream parlours. But in amongst that facade, there are Nazis and KKK members rolling around, sewn in amongst everything like shit in a flan. It’s an area I;d have loved to have spent more time in, but alas, immediately from this part you’re sent packing off to yet more tunnels and grey corridors, and that’s a running theme throughout; corridors and murky, dull areas. The locales do indeed ‘go places’ and by the time the finale rolls around you’ll have laid out Nazis in quite a surprising range of places, but more often than not these are a bit standard-looking. Nevertheless, MachineWorks produces a couple of surprising ways to navigate these environments at least. Rather than showing its hand right at the start, it’s over halfway through the game before you’re suddenly thrown something of a curve ball which results in BJ’s skills expanding.
VERDICT
What we have here, then, is a game contrary to the developing trend. Whereas for other big developers, the main focus is on perfecting open world environments, online communities and loot boxes *vomits*, Wolfenstein flies in the face of that. It’s a contained single-player game that’s real strength is story and personality, but also has solid and satisfying gun-feel and cathartic shooting. There are numerous set-pieces to bring a smile to your face that show real invention, all of which adds up to mean this is well worth checking out, particularly if you want to fuck up some Nazis.
And if you don’t? Well, you definitely wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of Captain Blazkowicz…

America will always be a mystical place, with photos just being an additional layer on the pop-image constructed by countless films, songs, movies, tv-shows, news-flashes that form the fabric of what we mistakenly perceive to be the USA.
But there is no inner core to it, nothing we can unwrap and suddenly find the Being of America, it is only layers wrapped in layers of images of places that remain imaginary.
Maybe its different when you live there and the shop on the corner is an actual shop where you can buy stuff instead of a stand-in. But I doubt that:
What then is the Becher-project? Vectors of obscurity and mystification vs. Clarity and Enlightenment
Photography as a vehicle of enlightenment; in the very same moment, it also widens the gaps that enlightenment leaves in its wake: Is there really any revelatory impulse in the endless parade of Gas Tanks? Or is it just a reminder that the world surrounding us will always remain an impenetrable mystery, no matter how hard we look at it?
The dialectic of enlightenment as it manifests in photography; the clearest, most objective way of depicting something only heightens our awareness, that the world will always remain unreadable. While the most mystifying way of showing something often falls flat and reminds us that all we ever know is the obvious.
