The large passenger ferry, Spirit of Tasmania, departing from Devonport on its way to Melbourne.

* I processed this from my hotel room on my new ultrabook which doesn't have Lightroom, Photoshop, or Canon DPP. So I had to process using primitive Microsoft photo editing software. I just wanted to get it uploaded quickly. I might re-edit in a few days when I get a moment.

** I finally managed to re-process the image. Importantly got rid of the annoying dust spots that have been plaguing my images of late. Must get my sensor cleaned!

I was planning this shot as a timelapse, but I didn't know that BT Tower turns off its lights and rotating logo display after 10pm-ish. So instead, the shot I get was unexpected but nice in a different way, with the unlit Tower silhouetting against the Flower Moon.

This is an 8 second timelapse of Comet Catalina (c/2013 US10) "charging" into a distant system of galaxies (Keenan's System).

Of course, this a line of sight perception as the galaxies are a 17 million light years away (ie so far that it took light 17 million years to reach us!) while the comet is practically in our back yard at only 70 million miles away.

The real time duration of the event was 2hrs 14mins.

You will notice the sky is blue at the beginning as the moon was up and nearly full but it had soon set and so the sky became darker and the galaxies become more pronounced.

Tech details:

I shot this with a Canon 650D dslr camera mounted on a Celestron Nexstar 8se Cassegrain telescope on an HEQ5 Pro mount.

ISO 6400 (very high hence why its so noisy, sorry, but as its a timelapse, I wanted the galaxies to punctuate more)

90 seconds for each frame exposure.

Timelapse captured using Canon Utilities on a Dell ultrabook laptop. Stacked with Deep Space Stacker. Frames processed with Camera Raw. Timelapse assembled in Photoshop. Deflickering done with MSU Deflicker plugin for VirtualDub.

Location: At an airbnb Chalet, located in decent rural dark skies (milky way just about visible) in Lynsted, Kent. Great value. Was easily accessible to me from London on public transport as I dont drive.

Omega Centauri, NGC-5139. Arguably Earths most spectacular Globular Cluster, I have a soft spot for Tuc47!

Almost 16,000 light years from us with a diameter of 150 light years it hosts an estimated 10 million stars. It is thought to be the remnant of a disrupted dwarf galaxy that out Milky Way galaxy has consumed.

Last weekend I added an hour on 2 minute exposures to my 5 minute exposures from last month so as to get more detail in the core.

Captured with my Sony A99, TS-Photoline 80mm triplet guided on my HEQ5-Pro mount. EQMOD, Cartes-Du-Ciel, PHD2 were used for the captures on an HP Spectra Ultrabook.

Processed in Pixinsight 1.8.5 and Photoshop CC2017.

Hooray to the city warriors!

They do not have swords or arrows as weapons. However they have smartphones, tablets, utlrabooks or laptops.

They wear suits as armour. And that is also the armour covering and protecting their hearts as they are too sensitive to be touched.

Hooray to the city warriors!

The Terracotta warrior statue shot was taken at Brighouse station of Canada Line in Richmond.

Have a great Thursday!

This is a time lapse of the Milky Way images I took at September Astrocamp in Brecon Beacons, Wales.

I had already posted a still image with a description of my experience at the campsite in my previous entry of this gallery, I wont get repetitive here, so I'll just jump straight to the timelapse capture details:

Each frame was 20 seconds long with 4 second intervals. 289 frames altogether. So real time capture was appx 2hrs (115mins). As you can see the clouds rolled in so there was no point in shooting any longer!

Images were processed with just Camera Raw then imported and compiled into Adobe Premiere Pro. Chose 25fps for a short but hopefully smooth video.

I don't like how the clouds are too yellow but its a compromise to punch out the Milky Way more.

Focus and captured using EOS Utilities on my Dell Ultrabook XPS13 tethered to the camera.

Camera: Canon 650D (unmodded - stock)

Lens: Samyang 16mm F2

Aperture: F2

ISO: 6400

Exposure: 20 sec

Tripod: Manfrotto BeFree

I've been asked how do I keep my George Nelson Swag Desk set-up minimal and uncluttered. The desk may be small but it has quite a few cubbies and the drawers are deep. I store an extra ultrabook (when I have to use Windows). I use SSDs that I swap out in Thunderbolt sleds or eSata cartridges. I normally transfer large VMs so I need fast I/O and I rely on Thunderbolt. Everything is kept tidy as you can see in my other photos.

The back cover of my ultrabook

This is a still image from the timelapse on previous entry on this gallery but I did a little bit more adjustments with shadow, denoise and contrast level.

A waxing Crescent Moon was transiting the Pleiades or the way I imagine it, the moon waltzed with the playful Seven Sisters.

New minimalistic Desktop on my new Samsung Series 9 15" ultrabook. (1600x900).

Windows 7 Home Premium.

I had used xwindows dock for a while, but I got tired of it. I am using rainmeter with google flat style icons for the dock (Icon Launcher Skin). Rainmeter skins used are "Circutous" for the recycle bin, wifi and hdd. Also used is a visual style called "Geniun 8" and a custom icon for the start orb.

My friend and I checked out another dark sky location in south England, this time was Bignor Hill, twice the distance from London than our previous location, Toy's Hill.

But boy was it WINDY.

Also, the moon was at 66% illumination.

Nevertheless, the reason we came is that forecast was for clear skies all night...a seldom occurance in our UK skies. And sure enough the forecast held true.

I decided to have a go at imaging the M51 Whirlpool Galaxy despite the moonlight and the uh...whirlwind conditions. Furthermore, my Celestron Nexstar Alt Az mount is not a mount that can handle windy condition but not having the legs extended on the tripod improves stability. A tip for you beginner photographers in case you didn't know.

Given the windy conditions I guessed a lot of my images will be no good so I went for a very brutal ISO 6400 capture which means a lot more noise and much less dynamic colour range. (I normally shoot 800 or 1600).

Sure enough, out of 1000 shots of 6 seconds frames, I ended up with just 244 frames that were reasonably stable. That's 25min 5sec total exposure.

So the resulting image was very very noisy. You might notice a bit but I elimanated the noise in post process but by doing so the faint outer spiral arm is also elimanated...a compromise. You will also notice I cranked up the highlights...sorry, too blinding for you? Ha.

I aint going for astrophoto of the year, this is just another personal souvenir for a fun adventure with my friend in scouting these English locations for stargazing and imaging!

About this fascinating Galaxy: the M51 (23 million light years away) looks like it is gobbling up the smaller yellowy galaxy but actually that smaller galaxy is passing by tugging at the M51's outer spiral arm...probably asking for a pound to buy a cuppa. I would love to see this galaxy in all its glory through the eyepiece but I couldnt see this through the eyepiece that night which I was quite sad about. I'll have to wait for a moonless clear night and dark sky to see it...so jealous of my camera's "eye"!

Capture Details:

Camera: Canon EOS 650d unmodded connected to external battery for uninterrupted imaging.

Telescope: Equinox 80 Pro APO

Mount: Celestron Nexstar 6/8SE (Alt Az)

Additional accessories: Dell XPS13 Ultrabook tethered to camera for best focussing . No flattener used this time as in the windy conditions it would have wobbed the system more! So another compromise there.

244 frames each being 6 seconds - 25 minutes total exposure time.

ISO 6400 (too high hence lack of dynamic range in colours and slight loss of detail in M51's outer spiral but I felt a necessary compromise due to windy conditions limiting good frames for total exposre time)

50 Dark frames

Post Processing:

Stacked with Deep Space Stacker,

Levels and curves adjustment in PS to improve contrast and details. Brutally clipped curves to eliminate noise at sacrifice of part of the outer spiral arm of M51. No masking done, all adjustments applied globally.
