Timelapse of Comet Catalina "charging" into Keenan's System of galaxies

This is an 8 second timelapse of Comet Catalina (c/2013 US10) "charging" into a distant system of galaxies (Keenan's System).

 

Of course, this a line of sight perception as the galaxies are a 17 million light years away (ie so far that it took light 17 million years to reach us!) while the comet is practically in our back yard at only 70 million miles away.

 

The real time duration of the event was 2hrs 14mins.

 

You will notice the sky is blue at the beginning as the moon was up and nearly full but it had soon set and so the sky became darker and the galaxies become more pronounced.

 

 

Tech details:

 

I shot this with a Canon 650D dslr camera mounted on a Celestron Nexstar 8se Cassegrain telescope on an HEQ5 Pro mount.

 

ISO 6400 (very high hence why its so noisy, sorry, but as its a timelapse, I wanted the galaxies to punctuate more)

 

90 seconds for each frame exposure.

 

Timelapse captured using Canon Utilities on a Dell ultrabook laptop. Stacked with Deep Space Stacker. Frames processed with Camera Raw. Timelapse assembled in Photoshop. Deflickering done with MSU Deflicker plugin for VirtualDub.

 

Location: At an airbnb Chalet, located in decent rural dark skies (milky way just about visible) in Lynsted, Kent. Great value. Was easily accessible to me from London on public transport as I dont drive.
