The blue-winged kookaburra (Dacelo leachii) is a large species of kingfisher native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea. With a length of 38 to 42 cm it is slightly smaller than the more familiar laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae).
The blue-winged kookaburra has cream-coloured upper- and underparts barred with brownish markings. It has blue wings and brown shoulders and blue rump. It is sexually dimorphic, with a blue tail in the male, and a rufous tail with blackish bars in the female.
The blue-winged kookaburra lives in groups of up to 12 birds in open savannah woodland and Melaleuca swamps, as well as farmlands such as sugar cane plantations.
De blauwvleugelkookaburra of blauwvleugelijsvogel (Dacelo leachii) is een grote ijsvogel uit noord Ausralië en zuid Nieuw-Guinea.
Met een lengte van 38 à 42 cm is deze ijsvogel een tikkeltje kleiner dan de bekendere gewone ijsvogel (Dacelo novaeguineae).
De blauwvleugelkookaburra heeft evenals de kookaburra een lange, forse snavel. Het verschil met de gewone kookaburra is de tekening op de kop, met horizontale strepen op de kruin en boven het oog. De iris is wit en de stuit is lichtblauw. Op de bruine vleugel zitten opvallend blauw gekleurde dekveren. Bij het mannetje is de staart donkerblauw, bij het vrouwtje is de staart roodbruin met een donkere bandering (zoals ook bij de gewone kookaburra).
De blauwvleugelkookaburra leeft in groepen van maximaal 12 vogels. Het leefgebied bestaat uit tropisch- en subtropisch bos, savanne en veel minder agrarisch gebied. De vogel lijkt qua gedrag op de gewone kookaburra, maar is schuwer, houdt zich schuil in het gebladerte en komt niet voor nabij menselijke bebouwing.

IUCN status: Near Threatened. Due to the fact that this species is suspected to be undergoing a moderately rapid and continuing population decline as a result of significant losses in the extent of this habitat throughout its range.
Male is highly distinctive, with a broad blue-green band across a white chest. Female is very different, with an all-orange belly (Wikipedia)
Friends my photo of IC 4628 (Shrimp Nebula), 4x120seconds with filter R, 4x120seconds with filter G, 4x120seconds with filter B for a total of about 25 minutes of exposure (being a telescope free more I can not do), telescope Ritchey-Chretien Close Carbon Tube 320/2885 f / 9, CCD camera Apogee High U16, on Paramount ME mount, processing with Pixinsight, this telescope belongs to iTelescope.net. IC 4628 (sometimes known as the Shrimp Nebula or RCW 116) is a large emission nebula in the constellation Scorpius.
It is observed in the southern part of the constellation, just north of the bright open cluster NGC 6231, which is also located in the same galactic environment; It can be easily photographed using a telescope and filters suitable for detecting ionized hydrogen. Its declination is moderately austral and this means that in the northern hemisphere it can only be observed starting from the medium-low temperate regions.
