East Java - Indonesia

Hello, dear friends! I hope all is wonderful with all of you. I'm back from my vacation in Indonesia. A wonderful country with wonderful fauna, lovely people and great landscapes. I loved everything, but it was a very tiring trip, I'm still resting and trying to organize my photos.

This one escaped to my control... it was supposed to be private during a few more days... but I really appreciate your lovely comments and faves. I will be back very soon. Big hug!

Endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia

Searching for a bird as small as this one in a quite vast area is almost like looking for a needle in a haystack. We arrived at the location after lunch and only managed to photograph it when the daylight was already fading. The access to the site is quite difficult. We had to cross a river walking on a tree trunk and the banks were quite high, difficult to climb and even more to descend. Thank God, I had a good help :) But the effort was worth it.

Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, Raja Udang

The common kingfisher is widely distributed over Europe, Asia, and North Africa. In temperate regions, this kingfisher inhabits clear, slow-flowing streams and rivers, and lakes with well-vegetated banks. It frequents scrubs and bushes with overhanging branches close to shallow open water in which it hunts. This species is resident in areas where the climate is mild year-round, but must migrate after breeding from regions with prolonged freezing conditions in winter. Most birds winter within the southern parts of the breeding range, but smaller numbers cross the Mediterranean into Africa or travel over the mountains of Malaysia into Southeast Asia. Kingfishers migrate mainly at night, and some Siberian breeders must travel at least 3,000 km between the breeding sites and the wintering areas. The common kingfisher hunts from a perch 1–2 m above the water, on a branch, post or riverbank, bill pointing down as it searches for prey. It bobs its head when food is detected to gauge the distance, and plunges steeply down to seize its prey usually no deeper than 25 cm below the surface. The wings are opened under water and the open eyes are protected by the transparent third eyelid. The bird rises beak-first from the surface and flies back to its perch.

Found in the lowlands of the Indonesia island of Sulawesi and Lembeh.

Malay name: Binti-binti, Pekaka Bintek-bintek, Pekaka Bintik-bintik, and Raja Udang Telinga Biru.

Note: Male has full black beak while in females, the lower beak is reddish orange in color.

The blue-eared kingfisher (Alcedo meninting) is found in Asia, ranging across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is found mainly in dense shaded forests where it hunts in small streams. It is darker crowned, with darker rufous underparts and lacking the rufous ear stripe of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) which is found in more open habitats. A number of subspecies have been described that differ in measurement and colour shade. Adult males have an all dark bill while females have a reddish lower mandible.

Description: This 16 cm (6.3 in) long kingfisher is almost identical to the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) but is distinguished by the blue ear coverts, darker and more intense cobalt-blue upperparts with richer rufous under parts. The juvenile blue-eared kingfisher has rufous ear-coverts as in the common kingfisher but it usually shows some mottling on the throat and upper breast which disappears when the bird reaches adulthood. Young birds have a reddish bill with whitish tips.

Ecology and breeding: The blue-eared kingfisher is largely resident within its range. They usually perch on branches overhanging densely shaded streams before diving below to capture prey that includes crustaceans, dragonfly larvae and fish. Other insects including grasshoppers and mantids have been recorded.

The breeding season in India is mainly May to June in northern India and January in southwestern India. The nest is a metre long tunnel in the bank of a forest stream where about five to seven white near spherical eggs are laid

Location: Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia (migrant).

Distribution: Widely distributed over Europe, Asia, and North Africa, mainly south of 60°N.

Malay name: Pekaka Cit-cit, Burung Raja Udang, Raja Udang,

Raja Udang Biasa,

If I say I am thankful that it finally showed up, it is an understatement. We waited for 4 hours and call it quit. We packed our gears and head for lunch about 30 minutes away, planning to head right home after lunch. In middle of lunching, a buddy texted us, hey it is here, come back quick if you wanna try your luck. Well, the rest is history!

Life span: 7-21 years

Top Speed: 40 km/h

Weight: 26-40g

Length: 16-17 cm

Wingspan: 24-26 cm

Gender Identification: Male has pale rufous underparts with a white-tinged throat, rufous ear-coverts, turquoise blue upperparts and mostly black bill. Female resembles male but base or most of lower mandible orange-reddish. Juvenile has duller underparts with dusky wash across breast.

Habitat: Usually found along rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds—almost any fresh or brackish habitat with small fish.

Behaviour: The common kingfisher is highly territorial; since it must eat around 60% of its body weight each day, it is essential to have control of a suitable stretch of river. It is solitary for most of the year, roosting alone in heavy cover. If another kingfisher enters its territory, both birds display from perches, and fights may occur, in which a bird will grab the other's beak and try to hold it underwater. Pairs form in the autumn but each bird retains a separate territory, generally at least 1 km (1⁄2 mi) long, but up to 3.5 km (2+1⁄4 mi) and territories are not merged until the spring.

Call: Easily detected once its high, shrill whistled call is learned, even if the bird itself is hidden. The flight call is a short, sharp whistle chee repeated two or three times. Anxious birds emit a harsh, shrit-it-it and nestlings call for food with a churring noise
