What was formerly an ever-growing list of detailed technical terminology and notes was redesigned. In the Genotypes section, the technical terms are hidden. Opening each section reveals those terms and associated text notes. Genotypes which include photos and disease model terminology are indicated when the section is closed. When expanded as shown here, all the details are available. This allows the user first to focus on their area of interest, then to drill down to the details.
Problem: The previous image shows the old menu system: one nearly-hidden option menu (below the search functionality box) and a list of links to several static index pages.
Solution: New interactive menu system using Javascript. Provided 37% more links in 30% less space.
Provides the user with a warning when a problem occurs, but does so with subtlety. More information is provided only on-demand.
When individual tokens in the string are not matched, a red warning is shown and additional details are available. If the user clicks the "details" link, the small window with more information is displayed. The unmatched text is highlighted in red; custom messages regarding the specific algorithms relevant to the search string are shown.

Sketchnoting is a mix of text and visual elements like icons, diagrams, drawings, arrows and loads more.
We all have taken a ton of plain text notes, tens and hundreds of pages. These can be of any form, handwritten or digital. The only problem that we all face with this kind of note taking is that we never seem to recall any of the points, can't remember the ideas or the concepts, the connection between the points, missed a few important points here and there, and sometimes we don't even remember taking down the notes itself.
Sketchnoting is an efficient method for solving solving and capturing ideas which in turn helps us convey our ideas to others since it involves visual and verbal elements.

During early phases, sketchy mockups are used to elicit feedback on particular design element and behavior possibilities. Keeping the mockup sketchy encourages reviewers to focus on larger questions of functionality and design rather than being distracted by details which look too finished. At bottom right, a text bubble proposes behavior of the product not directly tied to design elements shown.

What was formerly simply a list of detailed technical terminology and notes was redesigned as a matrix listing high-level summary terms. These summary terms can be expanded to show the detailed technical terminology, as shown here. This allows the user to find their area of interest first, then drill down to the specific relevant terminology. This close-up shows the color-coded labels which tie sections of the page together.
The journal picture of this spread describes a visit to the appliance section of a local shop. We visited DID in Clonmel to look at UX designs for washing machines. On one washing machine, the energy efficiency settings were well-designed and intuitive. We took our sketches from the site visit to a review session and blog post.
Problems: Page layout doesn't easily allow updates with additional material; uninviting and visually confusing; search tool appears overly complex; logo and color scheme look dated; previous design updates occurred in 2003.
This search returns many types of vocabulary terms with data which may be relevant to the user's query. These results previously were excluded by default.
On mouse-over, tooltips provide some additional description and indicate that clicking the label will open a new window.

TJ viewed the UX of food processors on the floor of DID, an appliance shop in Clonmel. He also sketches dishwashers on the shop floor.
During early phases, a variety of sketchy mockups are produced to stimulate discussion and get feedback on possible design elements. Variations on a single interface or piece of functionality are created and their advantages and weaknesses are compared and discussed. Sketchy mockups are also used to obtain stakeholder feedback and buy-in.
