Mockup of user-facing web app query interface featuring tabbed navigation; dropdown menus; autocomplete input fields; contracting interface with Ajax results presented below the now-hidden query form.

Everything reaches a saturation point and design is no exception. After a certain point, your designs become obsolete; your greatest assets become a liability. Here's Bansi Mehta's take on Design Debt and ways to tackle it.

Some documentation took the form of sketches created in Powerpoint, annotated and described as Use Case flows in Word.

Redesigned search results list. Best-matching result is shown first, with 4 stars indicating exact match. Other matches containing the text as a token follow. Other categories of results (Vocabulary Terms) are included. Site Search with Google is a pre-filled option. See also the screenshot: Details for Search Result.

Simplified interface design replacing two existing interfaces with multiple design problems. Query Form uses responsive enhancements: 1. autocomplete where possible, 2. additional options appear only when triggered by specific user behaviors.

Each Results item returned from a search includes a link labeled More Details. Following the link returns a page explaining details for that result including a ranked listing of all data matches causing an individual result to be returned. Only the best-ranked match is shown on the Search Results list. The Details page includes a link to the relevant page.

Mockups in later stages of projects are built using HTML, CSS and Javascript. This static example includes design element proposals, icons and other assets. Notes include reasoning behind proposals and issues not yet decided.

A later-phase mockup in HTML with CSS, Javascript interactivity, and icon assets. (Note: many design features shown here were required by the client. Usability tests favored a different design which the client rejected.)

Little snippet of UX for an elementary school.

This is a modern and professional landing page design, designed in adobe illustrator.

What was formerly an ever-growing list of detailed technical terminology and notes was redesigned as a matrix listing high-level summary terms. These summary terms can be expanded to show the detailed technical terminology. In the middle Genotypes section, the technical terms are again hidden. Opening each section reveals those terms and associated text notes. In the bottom section, disease terminology was added. Color-coded and labeled blocks tie the three sections together.

Opening each section reveals those terms and associated text notes. Genotypes which include photos and disease model terminology are indicated.

Problems: Prior search results list. Results in other data type categories were not included by default, so zero-results sets were common and not very helpful. (Sitewide redesign removed sidebar query and navigation and underutilized whitespace. See Front Page, Landing Page, Menus.)

Graphical representation of information architecture showing data entry modules to be added or changed, and web interfaces to be retained, added or changed. This shows the client and the team where work effort is needed so priorities, resources, and timing can be decided.

Redesigned user-facing page features: 1. page table of contents at top with jump-down links; 2. featured thumbnail image linked to full-size image; 3. expandable summary matrix, initially collapsed, contains links to pop-up details; 4. expandable list of detailed data sections (genotypes), initially collapsed; 5. table of associated disease model data

Provides the user with more data on-demand once a successful search results set is obtained (from Search Results to Batch Query).

The members of the results set can be forwarded to the Batch Query tool where additional data types can be obtained and the results downloaded in various formats.
