Kouri Island, where Hanalee Villa Kouri is located, is an island of about 8km in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, surrounded by the wonderful blue sea. Although it was separated from the main island of Okinawa by the sea, the Kouri Bridge was completed in 2005, and it is now possible to come and go by land via Yagaji Island connected by a bridge from the main island of Okinawa.

I think this is another species of Ixora. Photographed on 13 March 2017, in the gardens at the Blue Waters Inn on the island of Tobago.
"Ixora is a genus of flowering plants in the Rubiaceae family. It is the only genus in the tribe Ixoreae. It consists of tropical evergreen trees and shrubs and holds around 545 species." From Wikipedia. Needless to say, I don't know exactly which kind of Ixora this is.

Bear with me, everyone, as I think I am going to have to post 5 photos (I posted 6 the first two days) from my trip each day, otherwise it will take me many months (years?) to get them on to Flickr. Obviously, no comments expected, unless you happen to like one photo in particular. Actually, I am so disappointed with my photos - never have so many photos come out blurry, many totally blurry and no use at all. I'm not sure why, though the light was often really bad and maybe the humidity had some effect. For some species, I will be posting awful shots, just for the record. I might even post a pile of photos at a time some evenings, when far fewer people are on Flickr, and then post five better images the following morning. Won't even stop and add descriptions, etc., just so that I can get my photos added here.
It will take me forever to do much of a write-up about this trip, but I hope to add an extra bit of information about each photo to the very simple, basic description. Right now, I'm not quite sure where I was and when, lol! We arrived back in Calgary in the evening of 21 March 2017, and I have to get myself somewhat organized and should be seeing to all sorts of important things. Instead, of course, I have been stuck in front of my computer all day, each day : ) Totally dead beat after such a busy time away, dealing with extremely early mornings and hot, humid weather. Those of you who know me well, know that I am a dreadful night-owl, so getting up around 5:15 am was an absolute killer. Also, heat and humidity don't agree with my body, so each trip out was quite exhausting - but a thrill, of course! In the morning of 21 March, we had to get up around 2:00 am, as we had such an early flight (5 and a half hours) from Trinidad to Toronto - followed by a four-hour flight back to Calgary. On our very first day, we had three flights in a row, as we flew from Calgary to Toronto, then Toronto to Port of Spain on Trinidad, from where we had a short flight to the island of Tobago. Still can't believe I've actually had this trip!
This adventure was only the second holiday (or was it actually my third?) of any kind, anywhere, that I have had in something like 30 or 35 years! The other holiday was a wonderful, one-week holiday with my great friends from England, Linda and Tony, when we went down south to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons in September 2012. I have had maybe half a dozen weekends away, including to Waterton National Park, which have helped keep me going.
Six birding/photographer friends and I decided that we would take this exciting trip together (from 12-21 March 2017), spending the first two or three days on the island of Tobago and then the rest of the time at the Asa Wright Nature Centre on the nearby, much larger island of Trinidad. We decided to take a complete package, so everything was included - flights (we were so very lucky to get Black Friday prices, which were 50% off!), accommodation at both places, all our food, and the various walks and day trips that we could chose from. Two of my friends, Anne B. and Brenda, saw to all the planning of flights and accommodations, which was so very much appreciated by the rest of us. I could never have done all this myself!
What a time we had, seeing so many beautiful and interesting things - and, of course, everything was a lifer for me. Some of these friends had visited Costa Rica before, so were familiar with quite a few of the birds. There was a lot more to see on Trinidad, so we were glad that we chose Tobago to visit first and then spend a longer time at Asa Wright. It was wonderful to be right by the sea, though, at the Blue Waters Inn on the island of Tobago.
The Asa Wright Nature Centre, on the much larger island of Trinidad, is such an amazing place! We stayed in cabins up or down hill from the main building. Really, one doesn't need to travel away from the Centre for birding, as so many different species visit the Hummingbird feeders that are right by the huge, open veranda, and the trees of the rain forest high up a mountainous road. The drive up and down this narrow, twisting, pot-holed road was an adventure in itself! Never would I ever do this drive myself - we had a guide who drove us everywhere in a van/small bus. I had read many accounts of this road, lol! There was just enough room for two vehicles to squeeze past each other, and the honking of horns was almost continuous - either to warn any vehicle that might be coming fast around the next bend or as a sign that drivers knew each other. The drive along this road took just over an hour each way.
I'm already missing the great food that was provided every single day at Asa Wright and the Rum Punch that appeared each evening. I never drink at all, so I wasn't sure if I would even try the Punch - glad I did, though, as it was delicious and refreshing.

On my way back from a walk along Moonee Beach I decided to follow a track that I'd never walked on before. It turns out that no-one has walked on it for quite a while and nature has started to do a good job of claiming it back. Along the way I came across this rusted old car jack which was a strange sight to see. There was a little bit of car tyre nearby but no other rubbish. I know the area used to be an old mine site but to look at this track now it would be hard to imagine vehicles travelling along it. It's good to see that nature can eventually repair itself from damage by man and eventually even this metal will be taken back.
Next time I go this way I'll make sure I'm wearing proper shoes. Thongs/sandals just weren't good enough as I found out after getting bitten between the toes by a meat ant - not to mention the snakes that I saw.
The Dominion Building, located on the southwest corner of Queen and Richmond in downtown Charlottetown, was built in the 1950s to serve as a headquarters for federal government work on Prince Edward Island. This brutalist building never fit in well with the more small-scale and traditional downtown of Charlottetown, and when the federal government moved its offices out a few years ago I expected the building might be torn down. Instead, in 2007 the building was transferred to the Canada Lands Company, which in 2010 sold the building to condo developers.
The Charlottetown Guardian's Dave Stewart reported in March of 2012 that tenants were starting to move in then. A quick search suggests that there have been some complaints, discussion forums about high prices (high for Charlottetown, maybe) and comments in least one blog post complaining about building issues.

Vila de Paranapiacaba/SP
A Vila Inglesa de Paranapiacaba, no topo da Serra do Mar em São Paulo, foi construída por engenheiros ingleses há quase 150 anos e marca o ponto final da subida da serra, a partir de Cubatão, da histórica São Paulo Railway – posteriormente conhecida como Estrada de Ferro Santos-Jundiaí, atualmente uma linha de carga operada pela empresa de logística MRS. Por essa ferrovia desceu toda a riqueza do café produzida em São Paulo e subiu uma imensa leva de imigrantes – italianos, portugueses, japoneses, espanhóis, árabes – que foram decisivos para transformar o estado em potência econômica ao longo do último século.
Após o declínio da ferrovia como meio de transporte de passageiros, a vila inglesa – tombada pelo Patrimônio Histórico em níveis federal, estadual e municipal – caiu no abandono, tendo se mantido como um polo de turismo ecológico alternativo bem próximo à capital, situada a menos de 20 minutos da última estação de trem urbano em operação comercial, Rio Grande da Serra. Paranapiacaba situa-se dentro dos limites do município de Santo André, embora não tenha ligação direta por terra com a cidade.

Para chegar à Vila de Paranapiacaba
De carro: Via Anchieta até km 29 (placa para Ribeirão Pires). Entrar na SP-148 (Estrada Velha de Santos) até o km 33. Entrar na SP-31 (Rodovia Índio Tibiriçá) até o Km 45,5. Pegar a SP-122 até Paranapiacaba.
De trem e ônibus: Linha 10-Turquesa da CPTM, que parte da estação Luz, com conexão ao Metrô nas estações Luz (Linha 1-Azul), Brás (Linha 3-Vermelha) e Tamanduateí (Linha 2-Verde). Seguir até a estação terminal Rio Grande da Serra. O restante do percurso é feito de ônibus (integração): Viação Ribeirão Pires, linha 040 – Paranapiacaba. Os ônibus saem a cada hora, a partir das 4h30.
Outra opção de ônibus: ônibus municipais partem do Tersa (Terminal Rodoviário de Santo André), ao lado da estação da CPTM, a cada 40 minutos, a partir das 4h30 nos dias de semana, e nos fins de semana a partir das 5h.

Chinese Mythology - gui 龜 "turtle"
The turtle (gui 龜) is an auspicious animal in ancient China. It is said in the book Zhongxuanji 中玄記 that a thousand years of turtle is able to communicate with humans. In the age of one thousand years a turtle grows hair, as the Shuyiji 述異記 says. A five thousand years old turtle is called shengui 神龜 "divine turtle", an animal older thatn ten thousand years is called linggui 靈龜 "spiritual turtle".
The black turtle xuangui 玄龜, wugui 烏龜 or xuanwu 玄武, or "turtle-snake" guishe 龜蛇 is the symbol of the north, darkness and winter.
Other auspicious animals are phoenix (fenghuang 鳳凰), unicorn (qilin 麒麟) and dragon (long 龍).

In China the traditional Chinese character symbolizing the turtle (龜) shows a head like that of a snake at the top, to the middle left of the paws, to the middle right of the shell, and at the bottom of the tail. According to the "Book of ceremonies", the single-horned rhino, phoenix, tortoise, and dragon are the four entities that possess spirit. Tortoise shells were used for divination during the ancient Chinese Shang Dynasty and carry the earliest specimens of Chinese writing. Some Chinese are of the opinion that their script was taken from the signs on the back of the tortoise.
For the Chinese, the tortoise is sacred and symbolizes longevity, power, and tenacity. It is said that the tortoise helped Pangu (also known as P'an Ku) create the world: the creator goddess Nuwa or Nugua cuts the legs off a sea turtle and uses them to prop up the sky after Gong Gong destroys the mountain that had supported the sky. The flat plastron and domed carapace of a turtle parallel the ancient Chinese idea of a flat earth and domed sky.[26] For the Chinese as well as the Indians, the tortoise symbolizes the universe. Quoting Pen T'sao, "the upper dome-shaped part of its back has various signs, which correspond with the constellations on the sky, and this is Yan; the lower part has many lines, which relate to the earth and is the Yin.[7]
The tortoise is one of the "Four Fabulous Animals",[2] the most prominent beasts of China. These animals govern the four points of the compass, with the Black Tortoise the ruler of the north, symbolizing endurance, strength, and longevity.[27] The tortoise and the tiger are the only real animals of the four, although the tortoise is depicted with supernatural features such as dragon ears, flaming tentacles at its shoulders and hips, and a long hairy tail representing seaweed and the growth of plant parasites found on older tortoise shells that flow behind the tortoise as it swims. The Chinese believe that tortoises come out in the spring when they change their shells, and hibernate during the winter, which is the reason for their long life.[7]
The Chinese Imperial Army carried flags with images of dragons and tortoises as symbols of unparalleled power and inaccessibility, as these animals fought with each other but both remained alive. The dragon cannot break the tortoise and the latter cannot reach the dragon.[7] In China, the tortoise was also called the Black warrior, standing as a symbol of power, tenacity, and longevity, as well as that of north and winter. A tortoise was often put at the base of burial monuments. Legend holds that the wooden columns of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing were built on the shells of live tortoises since people thought that these animals were capable of living for more than 3000 years without food or water and are adorned with a magical power that prevents wood from rotting.
It was considered that the tortoise does not remember the day and month of its birth so calling someone a "tortoise" in China was considered offensive.
In Tibet, the tortoise is a symbol of creativity.[7]
The tortoise is of the feng shui water element [28] with the tiger, phoenix, and dragon representing the other three elements. According to the principles of feng shui the rear of the home is represented by the Black Tortoise, which signifies support for home, family life, and personal relationships. A tortoise at the back door of a house or in the backyard by a pond is said to attract good fortune and many blessings. Three tortoises stacked on top of each other represent a mother and her babies.[28] In Daoist art, the tortoise is an emblem of the triad of earth-humankind-heaven.[29]
The tortoise is a symbol of longevity, with a potential lifespan of ten thousand years.[2] Due to its longevity, a symbol of a turtle was often used during burials. A burial mound might be shaped like a turtle, and even called a "grave turtle." A carved turtle, known as bixi was used as a plinth for memorial tablets of high-ranking officials during the Sui Dynasty (581-618 CE) and the Ming periods (1368-1644 CE). Enormous turtles supported the memorial tablets of Chinese emperors[27] and support the Kangxi Emperor's stele near Marco Polo Bridge in Beijing, China. Tortoise shells were used for witchcraft and future forecasting. There are innumerable tales on the longevity of the tortoises and their ability to transform into other forms.[7]
