still in lock down in Wales #uskathome

A view from the dining room window. As it is a bay window it give a wide angle of view. This one shows a glimpse of the house across the road through the bushes growing one we the front hedge. Drawn with a Pilot C-Tec pen in my A4 Ebony sketchbook.

dernier croquis avant le deconfinement.

Our stair is built into a relatively small space and therefore has a couple of half landings which enable the stair to turn through 180 degrees. At the upper half landing there is a small window which affords this view, of the houses that can be seen from the spare room. Between the houses is the fairly new street of Danegate, a trio of two storey flats. Drawn with a Pilot C-Tec 0.25 pen which doesn't seem to mind the rough paper in the Ebony A4 sketchbook.

I spotted the potential of this view when I was hanging out the washing. It is the view across our neighbour's back garden to houses on Viking Road. The house in the drawing has a garage built onto the side with a lean-to roof over the entrance and the front door of the house. The owner of the house looks after his car very well, he is always washing it. The garage is the only one I know with a fitted carpet for the benefit of the car.

Carolynn's iris. The last few blooms on the iris which used to belong to my wife's mum Audrey. When Audrey died my wife dug it up from the garden and transplanted here in York. This year it has produced more flowers than ever.

Our young neighbour was very busy the other day, setting up a new bird feeder in the front garden and this garden feature by the kitchen window. His mum was very pleased with his efforts, which includes some candle lit lanterns, and sent us a photograph which I used as reference for this drawing. I have given the drawing to the young lad in recognition of his work. His face lit up when I handed it to him. One effect of the lockdown has been the children next door watching the birds and bats, and showing more interest in nature. It's clearly not all bad news. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.05 Pigment Liner pen on an A4 cartridge paper sketch pad.

Another day in lockdown for the virus. Although sunny it proved quite chilly sitting out for an hour drawing the view down the driveway. The houses in the distance are on Danebury Drive.

The first collection of garden waste since October 2019. The pandemic lockdown has delayed the start of collections so today was quite an exciting day. It means I can finally tackle the jungle that erupted in the fine weather while the lockdown has been in place. The drawing took about an hour and three quarters, I completely lost track of the time. Drawn with a Pilot C-Tec 0.25 pen in an A4 cartridge paper sketchbook.

From our front gate we have a view of the end of both our street and 103A Danebury Drive which is on the junction of Danebury Drive and Viking Road. The building is run by City of York Council. At the moment it is used to temporarily house families that cannot afford private rents. A few years ago it was used as a respite care centre for disabled people.

Lumière de fin d'après-midi à ma fenêtre.

The houses on Viking Road across the road from the front of the house are a sgiet terrace of four with ginnel or passage between the two houses in the middle. An hour or so sketching in the A4 Ebony sketchbook during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

An evening sketch of the large cabinet in a corner of the sitting room. We bought it to display a set of Russian bride dolls, with porcelain heads, and other treasures. Drawn with a Staedtler Pigment Liner 0.05 pen in an A4 Ebony sketchbook.

Another attempt at drawing some of the blooms on the honeysuckle. I cut a few flowers and brought them inside so I could study them more carefully. After a while their scent suddenly became noticeable. It was easier to draw them out of the wind and sitting down. Drawn with a Pentel 0.5mm pencil and Winsor and Newton watercolours in an A4 cartridge paper sketchbook.

The view from this particular bit of the front garden includes a steel framed pre-fabricated house. There are quite a few on the Carr Estate in Acomb, including several streets near our house. They were designed and built just after the Second World War to help cope with the shortage of housing brought about by slum clearance and wartime bombing. The York examples were renovated with new external cladding and modern insulation a few years ago and, I am told, are very comfortable and energy efficient. Just in front of the house is the snicket that provides a shortcut to Tostig Avenue and hence to the school where my wife works and I volunteer in "normal" times.

The warm weather was an incentive to tidy up the bottom end of the garden. Over the years we have tried to utilise this area for growing a few vegetable and then as a partly paved area with a summer seat. Neither scheme has done well particularly well. Drawn with a Pilot C-Tec pen and watercolour in an A4 cartridge paper sketchbook.

Our enterprising young neighbour has been busy rearranging the bird feeder near outside the bay window. I get a good view of the feeder from our bay window. I drew it with a Pilot C-Tec 0.25 pen which has blue, non waterproof, ink and a blue watercolour pencil. I added a bit of water to the drawing to even out the background tones. My critical friend said the blue didn't quite work, so I added a bit more colour to the main subject and foreground.

Making the most of the good weather, we had the garden chairs out, as often as possible in the shade. Drawn with a Staedtler Pigment Liner 0.05 pen in my A4 Ebony sketchbook.

Positioning myself almost sideways in relation the window gave me a different view from the spare room window. This looks past our next door neighbour, across the same garden was we see from the back bedroom but with the end of the houses in Coursey Grove just visible beyond the Mowbray Drive houses. The houses at the top of Jute Road still appear at the room of the drawing. Drawn with a Pilot C-Tec 0.25 pen in an A4 Ebony sketchbook.

I placed my stool on the windowsill of my living room so I had a high angle view to sketch. I have two cats but I ended up sketching six cats in different spots in my sketch (depending on how you count, there are actually more!) as they kept moving around as cats always do. It’s also sketching myself sketching and myself sketching in the lower half of my sketch. It’s like a tunnel going into the sketch.

More sketching from home because there's no going out sketching for a while. I do have loads of outside sketches to scan from January to March though, I should get a start on posting those.

More from the confinement in the house

I thought I had drawn all the views I could from the house and garden that weren't obscured by trees and bushes. Today I found this view, quite by chance, while cleaning the windows. Once again I had to mindful of looking across my neighbour's garden. So far they have not minded. Drawn with a Uni Pin 01 pen in an Ebony A4 size sketchbook.

We have herbs and an iris plant in pots near the kitchen door. Taking advantage of some lovely sunshine to sketch outdoors, albeit in social seclusion during the pandemic. Although sunny it felt chilly in the shade as the afternoon wore on. Drawn with a Staedtler Pigment Liner pen and watercolours in an A4 Ebony sketchbook.

Our high hedges make drawing the view from the garden rather difficult but I managed to a find a spot about 2 metres inside the front gate that afforded this view of the building on the corner of Danebury Drive and Viking Road. Drawn with a UniPin 0.1 pen in my A4 Ebony sketchbook.
