Very little is known about Francesco Bertos, a highly original artist who created a considerable number of complicated pyramidal groups in a very distinctive, ingenious style that mirrors the lightness and airiness of contemporary rococo painting in France. Each of the pieces has a primary view or "front" while offering interconnected details that unfold as one moves around the piece.
These four groups (Walters 54.657, 54.658, 54.659, and 54.660) are symbolic representations (allegories) of the four parts of which the world was then thought to consist. The concept of "continents" would come later and the North and South America would be considered separately . All have their names engraved. In the allegory of America, the fierce and primitive nature of the New World is represented by the semi-nude female Native American warrior wearing feathers, who has shot an opponent with an arrow. She supports a man who stands on an alligator that looks strangely like a lizard. The gruesome detail of the little boy lifting a decapitated head on a spear refers to European assumptions about the practice of cannibalism in America.

Located off the coast of Maine, Monhegan Island has long drawn artists attracted to its rugged headlands, brooding forests, and dramatic ocean vistas. Unlike most colleagues who visited during summer, Kent built a home and lived there year-round, working as a well digger, lobsterman, and carpenter from 1906–8. This boldly rendered winter scene was painted from his studio window.

An incomplete pearl-bordered roundel frames a diamond containing a pair of confronting peacocks that flank a Tree of Life and stand on a pair of confronting lions or dogs. Interspaces between diamond and border contain a pair of griffins (above) and a floral/vine motif (below). Winged bodies of confronting goats(?) stand on top of roundel and at right is an ornate palmette supported by a griffin. Tangential to the roundel at the upper right is a smaller pearl-framed medallion containing a circular Kufic inscription around a diaper-patterned center.

Götz covers every surface in gold leaf, giving each part of the object equal importance, rather than simply framing a central picture. In this distinctively Central European approach, figural narrative is subordinate to the overall ensemble. Götz designed this object to rest on top of an altar, probably in front of a larger painted or sculpted decorative scheme. The work contains relics seen through the small windows on the perimeter. These small remains of holy figures demonstrate the persistence of a medieval Catholic tradition well into the 1700s.
