Slavery existed in America from the earliest period of colonial settlement at the beginning of the 17th century until it was abolished in 1865 by passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. While some slaves became free through legal means, many who wanted freedom chose to escape from their owners and find a safe location. This system began during America's colonial period and led to laws that penalized persons who assisted runaway slaves. In 1793, the United States government passed its Fugitive Slave Act that allowed for the capture and return to slavery of any runaway slave living in a free state. As it developed over the years, the Underground Railroad, which was neither underground nor a railroad, provided a series of safe havens, or stations, for fugitive slaves who were making their way to the Northern states, Canada or other locations. The North Star was a guide for runaway slaves leaving the South, but once on the Underground Railroad the participants were conducted by foot, wagon, horse or boat to a private house, barn or church where they would be hidden until it was possible to send them to the next northward-bound location. This operation required the cooperation of free African Americans, Native Americans and whites. It also required secrecy since free participants could be charged with breaking the law in helping slaves escape their owners. This secrecy has made it difficult to document fully what buildings in Connecticut were used in the Underground Railroad and often this information has survived only in oral tradition.""

Holy Trinity, Hull, East Yorkshire
At the heart of this fascinating and elegant city sits England's largest parish church. Holy Trinity was rebuilt on a vast scale in the 15th century at the expense of the De La Pole family, and largely in red brick.
High, wide, and with a clerestory that is a wall of glass, this has much in common with the great medieval churches of East Anglia. Unlike most of them, but like its similarly grand neighbours in Patrington and Beverley, Holy Trinity is a cruciform church.

Esta exposición se plantea como un diálogo entre diferentes elementos escultóricos a través de los cuales Belén Uriel reflexiona sobre la relación entre la anatomía humana y los objetos vinculados a los conceptos de ocio y recreación del ser humano, especialmente aquellos con los que nuestro cuerpo se relaciona de manera muy directa y que forman parte de nuestras rutinas y prácticas sociales (sillas, bolsas de plástico, cestas, tapaderas...). De hecho, las distintas gamas cromáticas –rosa pálido, marrones, dorado, etc. ̶ aluden directamente, a través del material empleado, a lo corpóreo. Son esculturas que parecen extensiones de un cuerpo, o quizás esculturas para completar ese cuerpo. Estas formas inconcretas y orgánicas reflexionan sobre los estereotipos relacionados con los hábitos y las convenciones sociales ligadas al uso de los objetos. Es en esa materialidad donde se evidencia el proceso de trabajo de la artista de igual manera que también es palpable la tensión entre el material y la forma.

BELÉN URIEL. BONANÇA
This exhibition is proposed as a dialogue between different sculptural elements through which Belén Uriel reflects on the relationship between the human anatomy and the objects linked to the concepts of leisure and recreation of the human being, especially those with which our body is very directly related and which form part of our social routines and practices (chairs, plastic bags, baskets, lids...). In fact, the different chromatic ranges -pale pink, brown, gold, etc. ̶ allude directly, through the material used, to the corporeal. They are sculptures that look like extensions of a body, or perhaps sculptures to complete that body. These inconcrete and organic forms reflect on the stereotypes related to the habits and social conventions linked to the use of objects. It is in this materiality that the artist's working process is evident, just as the tension between material and form is also palpable.

C'est Uriel que Dieu a envoyé à Noé pour l'avertir avant le déluge.La Bible raconte comment Uriel est descendu au jardin d'Eden dans les rayons du soleil et s'est tenu à sa porte avec une arme ardente. Il est aussi un ange qui garde le tonnerre et la terreur.
Comme un ange de regret, il peut aider à comprendre les lois du karma, qui dans les termes les plus simples signifient que nous recueillons ce que nous avons semé. Uriel aide aussi à voir comment la pitié de Dieu nous amène à savoir que nous sommes tous aimés par Dieu.
Uriel est parfois considéré comme le plus astucieux de tous les anges. Il est souvent présenté avec une flamme de la connaissance dans une main ouverte qui conduit l'humanité à la santé et au bien-être. Si cette connaissance est abusée, alors Uriel livre la vengeance de Dieu.

Angels are spirits, but it is not because they are spirits that they are angels. They become angels when they are sent. For the name angel refers to their office, not their nature. You ask the name of this nature, it is spirit; you ask its office, it is that of an Angel, which is a messenger. -- St. Augustine
Spiritus was planned from the beginning as a two centre piece, using both the inside and the outside of the church. The Church of All Souls, Cheriton contains stained glass windows depicting the archangels Gabriel, Michael, Uriel and Raphael. We used these windows as the basis for the mapped video projection seen on the façade of the church.
The soundscape was the element that tied both the inside and outside together. In collaboration with the church, we lit the inside with candlelight creating a space in which the sound could be enjoyed and contemplated alone. The exterior was a larger scale piece using sound and image.
Created by Strange Cargo, the event has been supported by Arts Council England, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Interreg European Funding, The Tory Family Foundation, Shepway District Council and Kent County Council.
The Cheriton Lights Festival was selected under the European cross-border cooperation programme INTERREG IV A France (Channel) - England, co-funded by the ERDF.

Jan is a harpist, who plays Celtic harps in many places, of those, her most rewarding is beside the hospital bed of someone in need of a bit of soothing music.
She plays with our choir at church, her music adding to the beauty of the combined voices and instruments, and with moving solos.
Uriel is Jan's archangel which stands with her as she's playing, watching over those in need. She's written a song of her prayer that she prays as she is playing beside those in need. A prayer asking Uriel to help heal the heart & sooth the soul with angels blessings from above.
Jan is recording an album of her own compositions and those of others, that will be used where and when she cannot go to one in need of this soothing music.So that the album would have at least a photo of Jan, I had the honor of doing a photo session with Jan on a small hill-top at sunset. We were wind-blown a bit, and the wind started playing the strings, almost like an organ's pipes. It was a special time together, full of laughter and fun.
I do believe I caught Jan's bit of Irish fun, and that special twinkle in her smile and eyes.

Uriel (God is my light)
He is one of the 7 archangels. He is the angel of the world, is often identified as a cherub and angel of repentance. He stands at the Gate of Eden with a fiery sword to prevent human access to the tree of life. He is also identified as one of the angels who helped bury Adam and Abel in Paradise.
Is he who intercedes for humans before God for their salvation.
Stemming from medieval Jewish mystical traditions, Uriel has also become the Angel of Sunday, the Angel of Poetry, and one of the Holy Sephiroth.
He checked the doors of Egypt for lamb's blood during the plague. He also holds the key to the Pit during the End Times and led Abraham to the West.
In the Apocalypse of Peter he appears as the Angel of Repentance, who is graphically represented as being as pitiless as any demon.
He is one of the Angels of the Four Winds: Uriel (south), Michael (east), Raphael (west) (serving also a governor of the south, with Uriel), and Gabriel (north). He is also listed as an Angel of the four winds in the medieval Jewish Book of the Angel Raziel.
