The Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) is one of two species of albatross we saw on the Baja trip. They breed in Hawaii, including the island of Laysan (where the first specimen was described from), but they range widely across the North Pacific.

The oldest known wild bird is a Laysan Albatross, an adult female which was ringed on Midway Island in 1956. As they don't breed until they are five years old, she must have been hatched in 1951 (or earlier) and was still rearing a chick as recently as 2021 when she was at least 70.

Until the goldfinches showed up en masse, we saw more of these than any other bird at the feeders.

Last upload until I fly to Spain! Be back in a week with hopefully a moc contest

Well, there are some more weeks until christmass but yes, we're so close no matter what.

::: Do They Know It's Christmas? :::

It's Christmas time, and there's no need to be afraid

At Christmas time, we let in light and banish shade

And in our world of plenty

We can spread a smile of joy

Throw your arms around the world

At Christmas time

At Christmas time, it's hard but while you're having fun

There's a world outside your window

And it's a world of dread and fear

Where a kiss of love can kill you

And there's death in every tear

And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom

Well tonight we're reaching out and touching you

Bring peace and joy this Christmas

Here's to you

Raise a glass to everyone

Here's to them

And all their years to come

Can they know it's Christmas time at all

Feed the world, let them know it's Christmas time again

Tower Bridge is a Grade I listed combined bascule, suspension, and, until 1960, cantilever bridge[1] in London, built between 1886 and 1894, designed by Horace Jones and engineered by John Wolfe Barry with the help of Henry Marc Brunel. It crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and is one of five London bridges owned and maintained by the City Bridge Foundation, a charitable trust founded in 1282.

The bridge was constructed to connect the 39 per cent of London's population that lived east of London Bridge, equivalent to the populations of "Manchester on the one side, and Liverpool on the other", while allowing shipping to access the Pool of London between the Tower of London and London Bridge. The bridge was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales, and Alexandra, Princess of Wales, on 30 June 1894.

The bridge is 940 feet (290 m) in length including the abutments and consists of two 213-foot (65 m) bridge towers connected at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, and a central pair of bascules that can open to allow shipping. Originally hydraulically powered, the operating mechanism was converted to an electro-hydraulic system in 1972. The bridge is part of the London Inner Ring Road and thus the boundary of the London congestion charge zone, and remains an important traffic route with 40,000 crossings every day. The bridge deck is freely accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians, whereas the bridge's twin towers, high-level walkways, and Victorian engine rooms form part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition.

Tower Bridge has become a recognisable London landmark. It is sometimes confused with London Bridge, about 0.5 miles (800 m) upstream, which has led to a persistent urban legend about an American purchasing the wrong bridge.

In 1949 Ford led the pack in breaking away from the bulging fenders that had been the traditional, long standing look on most all cars of the prior years. The slab sided look, also affectionately known as the "shoebox" was a first to break away from that long lasting design style of the previous years. And it would start a trend that ultimately would be followed by all US auto manufacturers in the years that followed. It was a first for Ford, and I believe a first for all the automobile manufacturers. You might say they were the trend setter. Chevrolet, Ford's main competitor, however, was a bit of hold out and did not fully embrace the slab sided style until 1955, whereas most other car companies had already done so by that time.

From October 20 until 26 I managed to sneak out for a couple of days for some good old railfanning action. Weather forecasts were demotivating, but I decided to try to make the most of it. Letting the weather forecast determine my next destination seemed worth a try. Heading to the unknown was good motivation to eventually head off, after dropping the kids at school. An opening between the clouds would be moving east throughout the day and I decided to follow it, looking for opportunities. Number one was only half an hour from home, as BLS Cargo Nord was heading towards Antwerp withtheir daily Zeebrugge-Antwerp shuttle. On Monday 20/8 it was lead by 475 417. Sun and autumn colors didn't disappoint.

Not sure if it will make it, however

Not a serious contender for Fenced Friday either, I just liked the mood :-)

My annual pilgrimage to Osoyoos to visit Spotted Lake. I was tipped off viewing Foggy Lens-Kris Peterson ' (Foggy Lens) latest photo of this lake that the spots had indeed returned. Most of the years I've seen this the lake was fairly robust and the craters were almost invisible. This year with the drought we have experienced the lake has pretty much dried up leaving the craters in full evidence. I decided to stay until evening to get the sunset over the lake.

On this day, we set off to the land of towers and legends, a small yet very picturesque republic of Ingushetia, planning to capture the sunset already at the Tsey-Loam Pass. At that time, we were confident that we had allotted enough time for the journey, fully considering our previous experiences of frequent stops to capture something beautiful.

The road to the pass wounds like a graceful ribbon among the still snow-covered mountains, stretching along ridges and velvet meadows. It was not just an asphalted roadway, but a true attraction of landscapes, difficult to resist the beauty of which. With every turn, new, stunning views unfolded: rocky peaks soaring to the very skies and deep valleys that lulled with their solitude. At our stops, we saw wildflowers blooming among the stones, sharing their cheerfulness with us. We could hear the quiet whisper of a rapidly flowing stream somewhere in the distance and the hum of myriad insects as soon as the mighty wind calmed down.

It’s said that time stands still in such moments. I admit that it may be true, but it doesn't happen to everyone, and certainly not to us that day. The clock relentlessly counted the seconds, and we were left with not many precious minutes until the moment the sun would begin to sink below the horizon. The light was growing softer, and the highest peaks were already wrapped in fluffy clouds, preparing to spend the night in comfort. Soon, the sky was immersed in golden and rose-tinted shades, while the scattered clouds caught in the rays of the setting sun reflected an incredible palette of colors.

Having ascended to the pass, we found ourselves enveloped in a dense cloud, one of many that these stone giants with their silver heads laid beside them. The wind, like an old and weary shepherd, nudged the white clouds as if they were dozing sheep, momentarily revealing the shining peaks. The once-raging flames of the sunset had faded, leaving behind only smoldering embers that continued to sparkle, as if reminding us that somewhere within them, the fire still lingered, simply waiting to be rekindled.

Perhaps I didn’t make it to the sunset within its strict confines of time, but I gained a wealth of impressions by being at one of the most beautiful passes in the Caucasus, and that is far more important to me. In the end, we discussed plans for the dawn shoot and set off to find a place to spend the night.

Cap Rouge, Quebec City, Canada

First permanent establishments

In 1635, the first seigneurie was granted on the territory of Cape-Rouge, but revoked the following year by the Company of One Hundred Associates. However, by 1638 Paul Le Jeune, a missionary Jesuit, had noted in The Jesuit Relations the presence of some families in the valley.[1] Between 1647 and 1652, the seigneuries of Maur, on the west, and Gaudarville, in the east, were established on the territory. From that moment, based on taxable citizens, the settlement on the lands of Cap-Rouge are established. The village formed is served by the parishes of Ancienne-Lorette in (1678) to the north; of Saint-Augustin in (1691) on the west; and of Sainte-Foy (1698) in the east.

Geography

The beach of Plage Jacques Cartier and the cliffs of Cap-Rouge.

The name of Cap-Rouge, meaning "red cape", comes from its cliffs facing the Saint-Lawrence river and made of schist rock bearing a reddish tint. The other main topographic feature of Cap-Rouge is the Rivière du Cap Rouge valley where are concentrated some historic buildings as well the archeological remains of a pottery workshop active from 1860 to 1892. It is believed that until the end of its operations the workshop mainly used imported clay rather than the local one, which has a rather red hue.

The Cap-Rouge area is located to the south of the Canadian Shield and Laurentian Mountains, at the confluence of the geological regions of the Saint Lawrence Lowlands and of the northern Appalachians. It mostly sits at the western foot of the Quebec promontory, in the way of the Logan's Line - an inactive fracture in the Earth's crust first documented by Sir William Edmond Logan.

Esquelbecq Castle

The castle was already mentioned in 1299, when the daughter of Thierry d'Esquelbecq, Beatrix, married Gauthier Ghistelles. Their descendants owned the Esquelbecq castle until 1584, when the French lords were forced to sell their possessions in Flanders by the Spanish rulers.

The castle was besieged several times. In 1586, part of the castle was destroyed by Spanish malcontents. From 1606-1610 the castle was rebuilt.

The purchaser and new lord and earl of Esquelbecq was Valentin de Pardieu, governor of Gravelines, who led campaigns with the armies of Charles V. When he died without heirs in 1595, the castle of Esquelbecq was left to his nephew Philippe Levasseur de Guernonval. His descendants owned the castle for the next 225 years. In 1793, the Esquelbecq castle also suffered the wrath of the Patriots. Everything that reminded them of the Ancien Régime was looted, destroyed or removed. At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was ruined by battles and 15 days of enemy occupation. The Guernonval family abandoned it and finally sold it in 1821 to Louis Colombier, a merchant from Lille.

In 1984, the keep collapsed. From 2000 to 2016, restoration work was carried out.

The castle, outbuildings and garden and landscape park are protected and listed on 17-08-1987.

--------------------------

While on a drive-about in the boonies, I passed these cows that were heading for home. Now, sitting in traffic waiting to be "escorted" through a construction zone (one lane for a couple of miles), I glanced in my mirror and saw that they are about to pass me. Traffic sucks.

Until now, I had only seen the exoskeletons of Cicadas on some tree trunks. At the end of 2024, I discovered a Greengrocer Cicada (Cyclochila australasiae) and, more recently, this Floury Baker Cicada (Aleeta curvicosta), seen here on a Gaillardia bloom. Now, some of the Summer sounds around me have a name and an image :) /

Palomena prasina is found throughout Europe, as well as North Africa and Western Asia. They belong to the Pentatomidae family and have a size of 12 - 13,5 mm. From spring until autumn their color is green, but as it gets colder, their coloration changes to brown or red-brown. After hibernation they turn green again.

ODC "your way"

A rather damaged looking Speckled wood butterfly.

The speckled wood (Pararge aegeria) prefers to live in damp, dark woodlands. Unlike other butterflies, it's more active in shadier habitats rather than sunny ones. Males often fight over a perch, spiraling up to the treetops until they determine a winner. These perches are where the males find passing females.

I write this with a heavy heart. The last couple of years have found me with a progressively debilitating spinal column and joint problems. If it were just me, I would never ask, but I have 2 young daughters that look to me for support, so I have to swallow my pride...

If you are in a position to help, I have setup an account to accept donations, even as little as the price of a coffee. Anything would be greatly appreciated. See my "About" page on Flickr for the link. Thank you.
