If you don't cut the verges from time to time, it soon ends up chest high!

Europe, The Netherlands, Friesland, Vlieland, Vuurboetsduin, Vuurduin (uncut)

The cast iron lighthouse on display here was originally the superstructure of the lighthouse of Ijmuiden (designed in 1878 by Quirinus Harder). In 1909, it was moved to the Vuurboetsduin, one of the highest dunes in the Netherlands.

Although the lighthouse is only 16.8 metres tall, due to the height of the dune itself, 42 metres, the light is projected from 54 metres above sea level.

In 1929, a lookout post on poles was built next to the lighthouse. In 1973, the lighthouse's light bulb was replaced by three mercury lamps, and in 1986, it was completely renovated. The lighthouse replaced a stone tower (1836, designed by Jan Valk). Before that, there was a beacon on wooden poles. The oldest known reference to it goes as far back as 1462.

The lighthouse's signature rhythm is two seconds on and two seconds off.

Already in Classical Antiquity this pretty flowering plant was notorious for its sharp leaves. Hence the name 'Butomus', something like 'Ox-cutter' in English; it would not do as animal fodder. But insects remain uncut. Here along a ditch the summer-flowering blossoms is being visited by a Fly and a Hoverfly.

Europe, Scandinavia, Norge,Oslo, Holmenkollen ski jump stadium (uncut)

The graphic goodness of the Holmenkollen ski jump stadium: here .

Holmenkollbakken is a large ski jumping hill located at Holmenkollen in Oslo, Norway. It has a hill size of HS134, a construction point of K-120, and a capacity for 70,000 spectators. Holmenkollen has hosted the Holmenkollen Ski Festival since 1892, which since 1980 have been part of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup and 1983 the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup. It has also hosted the 1952 Winter Olympics and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1930, 1966, 1982 and 2011.

The hill has been rebuilt 19 times; important upgrades include a stone take-off in 1910, an in-run superstructure in 1914, and a new superstructure in 1928. During the Second World War, the venue was used as a military installation but was upgraded in the late 1940s. Further expansions were made ahead of the 1966 and 1982 World Championships, as well as in 1991. Between 2008 and 2010, the entire structure was demolished and rebuilt. Robert Johansson holds the hill record at 144.0 meters. The hill is part of Holmenkollen National Arena, which in addition to cross-country and biathlon venues, has the normal hill Midtstubakken. In 2011, the stadium was renovated.

I am so excited about these!

while trying to get prepared for this weekend's sale, I found the cigar box with the five-uncut polyhedrons. I have had these for over thirty years and still have not cut one.

Thanks Uήkή☢wŇ for the cover of S-L UnCut v2: www.flickr.com/groups/sluncut20/ I Really appreciate it !

While trimming the hedge out back in early September I found this guy hiding between a couple of leaves.

The hedge is a fanleaf hawthorn (Crataegus flabellata) which has pretty mean thorns, but I still managed to stick the MP-E65 (about a week old at that point) close enough for this portrait.

The butterfly is either a wood white (Leptidea sinapis) or a cryptic wood white (Leptidea juvernica) - Ir eally can't tell from just this shot.

The beach is North Avenue Beach in Chicago. Recent rain reduced large boulders of ice to small nuggets.

Europe, Spain, Valencia, Old centre, Mercat Central, People (uncut)

Well what can I say about the central market of Valencia....It's really one of the most fascinating markets of the Med region. Its vast scale, its articulated metal/glass/wood architecture, its rich smells. its products, (there are even two stalls just offering safran (azafrán), it neither being delapidated nor gentrified. Just.....fantastic !

It's the oldest ánd largest market of Spain. It was constructed from 1914-1928 in Valencian Art nouveau style (called 'modernista'). The architects were Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guàrdia Vial.

About the market, from the market:

"The Mercat Central de Valencia has always been known for the quality, variety and freshness of its products as well as the helpful, personalised service provided by its traders.

In addition to the market’s main activity, the innovative and business-like character of the traders has made the market grow and improve day by day. Nowadays, it is an important place for the sale of fresh products and a major cultural and tourist attraction not only for foreign visitors but also for the people of Valencia.

The Mercat Central de Valencia covers exactly 8,160 square metres divided into two areas or zones. The first one is an irregular shape with a surface area of 6,760 square metres and the other, which is octagonal and covers 1,400 square metres, houses the fish market. The basement, which has 7,690 square metres, was previously a fish auction and is now used as a car park.

The Mercat Central brings together almost 300 small traders and 1,500 people are involved in its daily activity. It is the largest centre of its kind in Europe specialising in fresh products and the first market in the world to rise to the challenge of computerising sales and offering home delivery, services which have been available since 2nd October 1996.

Nowadays, the Mercat Central is an important economic focal point of Valencia, not only because of the work of its traders but also because of the large number of visits it receives and events it organises."

Europe, Netherlands, Utrecht, Jaarbeursplein, Seypesteyn, City Hall, Central Station, Escalators & elevator, Stairs, People (uncut).

This capture is something between a street- and archishot. Lemme tell y’all something about the the things that are on display here. It’s the Jaarbeursplein entrance of Utrecht central station and the City Hall which is being drastically transformed. Along with its surroundings. The program: Utrecht Centraal . It’s the fourth Utrecht Central station transformation in succession. And after a long string of bad urban planning decision and unengaged modernist architectural vision, Utrecht seems to get it right. At least for the rail traveler things are starting to look good again.

The entrance displayed here is the place where once the Hoog Katherijne indoor sports facility stood and which only left room for a narrow stairway and two escalators. It felt as a neglected somehow even sordid back entrance. Now there’s a grand staircase with an amfitheatre feel and that serves as an entrance to the Central Station and to new City Hall.

Prominently shown here is the new City Hall (Kraaijvanger architects, 2014). The metal diagonal stability beams (‘stabiliteitsverbanden’) of the building are shown in the façade. In the comment box is a reinforced concrete stability beam used in ‘De Rotterdam’. The dual core of the new City Hall is reinforced concrete, the surrounding frame is metal. A very entertaining time lapse video that covers the entire construction of the building is here.

Below the buildings are the new escalators and elevators and the left part of the grand staircase and behind that a 70s office building that’s being redeveloped. It the ‘Seypesteyn’, it will be eventually incorporated in the new Utrecht WTC.
