The word drone seems to have quite negative connotations these days, so we tend to call ours a UAV (Unmanned Aeriel Vehicle). This is part of my work - in this instance we are flying over the Somerset levels, in order to get high resolution aerial imagery, so that we can study the state of the rhynes (ditches) in terms of vegetation and algae in the water. National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle Virginia is certainly worth a visit. Beware you should allow time to actually read the displays due to the vast amount of information presented.
That thing hanging off the UAV is how you start it - it spins up the propellors and then you remove it and about 10 minutes later it shoots into the sky like a bat out of hell. Good stuff! FOB Warrior, Kirkuk, Iraq, 23Jul2006.

This Surveillance UAV was produced by Cranfield Aerospace, DERA and Tasuma (UK) Ltd. It has a two hour endurance and flies at around 70mph.
It has been allocated the British Aircraft Preservation Council identity BAPC 515 and is seen on display in Hangar 2.

This 'UFO' hovered over the fort and above my head at Cawsand before heading out to sea. It was hard to tell how big it was but as we were walking back to the car, I noticed a couple of students with a laptop. I think it had a camera attached.

This system uses thermal soaring to stay aloft all day long. It senses when it's going through a thermal, and when it hits the edge it turns back into it, soaring like a hawk.
They're networked and share data. The concept is a flock of these can be put up, and they'll collaboratively share thermal information and be able to stay aloft all day.
