Please join me on the blog today as I make up a simple, weighted blanket - commonly used for people with sensory disorders, those on the autism spectrum, and to help treat anxiety conditions.

This version is made in flannel and bound with a 1/4" double-fold binding. It weighs 4 pounds, with 6" channels, and measures approximately 39" by 51".

TO VIEW sit back from your monitor 2 feet and place your index finger about 10 inches in front of your eyes and focus on your finger. This will cause your eyes to go comfortably cross eyed. Keep that same cross eyed focus and notice there are now 3 photos in the back ground. Do not let your eyes leave the cross eye as you look at the middle picture which has appeared. Now increase or decrease how much your eyes are cross eyed until the image pops into 3D. Your eyes will want to leave the cross eye, but fight that urge. This is an acquired skill and takes practice. Stop if it's uncomfortable.

Tutorial created for GCD Studios using the Splendor collection.

Here's the inside obviously, where I point out the first point of interest, the T-bar. And * shows where the pull strings exits the head. Once the extra sleep eyes string is attached it goes out there as well as the normal pull string.

Using chalk pastels to color a wig is certainly different. I haven't been able to get a consistent color with it (the second wig is still super saturated and has many yellow spots from where the green didn't take well).

Anyway, there's two parts to the coloring process the way I did it: colored water soaks and physical painting.

First, take a cup of hot water (in a larger container) and shave the chalk pastel into it. Depending on what shade you want (or mostly want), you'll need to be sure to put a generous amount in until the water turns roughly the shade you desire. Be sure to mix it thoroughly until it has the consistency of Easter egg dye (no grainy portions).

Second, you'll need to take a piece of the remaining chalk pastel and set it aside. Wash the wig in warm water. When it is completely saturated, rub the pastel over the top layer of the wig until it is the same color as the pastel (it will get lighter during the rest of the process).

For a more consistent color, work the pastel (which will become paste-like) through the different layers of the wig with your fingers. This step is extremely messy (I'm still trying to get green out from under my nails from this afternoon's attempt).

Third, dip the wig into the colored water and let it soak for five to fifteen minutes.

Repeat steps two and three as many times as needed. Just remember kanekalon holds moisture extremely well. So the longer it soaks, the longer it will take to dry.

Fourth, once you are done soaking the wig, take it out of the container. For a little extra kick, dump the colored water over the wig. Let the color set for ten minutes (at least).

If it's still not the color you want, go back and repeat the process until it's the shade/color you desire.

Finally, after the color has set in, rinse the wig in cold water to get rid of any excess color. Brushing the wig will help this process, but be sure to wash the brush after you are finished (or it will end up painted).

It will take a few hours for it to completely dry, but when it's dry it will be safe to put on the doll's head. Be sure it's completely dry before putting it on the doll because if any part of it is still wet, it will pass the color on to the doll (which isn't harmful, just inconvenient).
