Designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill and built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891, it is one of the most prestigious venues in the world for both classical music and popular music. Carnegie Hall has its own artistic programming, development, and marketing departments, and presents about 250 performances each season. It is also rented out to performing groups. The hall has not had a resident company since 1962, when the New York Philharmonic moved to Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall (renamed Avery Fisher Hall in 1973 and David Geffen Hall in 2015)

I used this setup to make the video of the July 11, 1991 eclipse in Baja California. I used Solar Skreen mylar film for the filter element. The film was produced Roger W. Tuthill. The carrier was constructed of cardboard from a binder cover. The filter box fit over the end of a Sigma VT5 5x teleconverter. The threaded end of the converter fit into the 8x optical zoom of my camcorder.

Robert Bolling Brandegee (1849 - 1922)

Robert Bolling Brandegee was one of the most loved painters of “The Hartford Art Colony”, as Helen Fusscas has named them. He was widely admired by the painters and critics of the time but seldom made any attempt to promote his own art, preferring to boost that of others. He lived in Farmington most of his adult life where he taught generations of women at Miss Porter’s School. He was primarily know for his portraits and figure paintings but also produced a large body of landscapes of the Farmington Valley and the Twin Lakes region of Connecticut where he had a summer home.

He was born in Berlin, Connecticut on April 4, 1849, the son of Elisha and Florence S. Brandegee. He was the younger brother of Charles Brandegee, who was a probate judge and the Town Clerk of Farmington. Much information of his early life comes from his diaries and sketchbooks begun when he was about 14. He also wrote an unpublished autobiography in 1918. As a boy he studied at the Worthington Academy in Berlin and the Edward I. Hart’s School for Boys in Farmington. His family had an avid interest in botany and his Aunt Sarah Tuthill had taken drawing lessons. His sister Florence spoke of his childhood in an addendum to his Hartford Courant obituary. She said he displayed a marked inclination to art and while attending Hart’s School would tramp the fields and woods every opportunity he could get, just to sketch landscape scenes and any object that would claim his attention from observation. “Robert was a studious boy at nature. He gave almost all his spare moments to trying his hand at drawing pictures of bits of countryside scenery. It was not unusual for him to go out and study his surroundings, whether they be in hills or woods, for hours, until sketching what he saw became a passion to the boy. His talent was rather remarkable for so young a boy. He took to studying drawing very seriously, and worked hard at developing his latent powers by sketching the landscape.”

The NBMAA collection represents the major artists and movements of American art. Today it numbers about 8,274 paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and photographs, including the Sanford B.D. Low Illustration Collection, which features important works by illustrators such as Norman Rockwell, Howard Pyle, and Maxfield Parrish.

Among collection highlights are colonial and federal portraits, with examples by John Smibert, John Trumbull, John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, and the Peale family. The Hudson River School features landscapes by Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Martin Johnson Heade, John Kensett, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Church. Still life painters range from Raphaelle Peale, Severin Roesen, William Harnett, John Peto, John Haberle, and John La Farge. American genre painting is represented by John Quidor, William Sidney Mount, and Lilly Martin Spencer. Post-Civil War examples include works by Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, George de Forest Brush, and William Paxton, and 19 plasters and bronzes by Solon Borglum. American Impressionists include Mary Cassatt, Theodore Robinson, John Henry Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, Willard Metcalf, and Childe Hassam, the last represented by eleven oils. Later Impressionist paintings include those by Ernest Lawson, Frederck Frieseke, Louis Ritman, Robert Miller, and Maurice Prendergast.

Other strengths of the twentieth-century collection include: sixty works by members of the Ash Can School; significant representation by early modernists such as Alfred Maurer, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Max Weber; important examples by the Precisionists Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, Preston Dickinson, and Ralston Crawford; a broad spectrum of work by the Social Realists Ben Shahn, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Jack Levine; and ambitious examples of Regionalist painting by Grant Wood, John Steuart Curry, and Thomas Hart Benton, notably the latter’s celebrated five-panel mural, The Arts of Life in America (1932).

Works by the American Abstract Artist group (Stuart Davis, Ilya Bolotowsky, Esphyr Slobodkina, Balcomb Greene, and Milton Avery) give twentieth-century abstraction its place in the collection, as do later examples of Surrealism by artists Kay Sage and George Tooker; Abstract Expressionism (Lee Krasner, Giorgio Cavallon, Morris Graves, Robert Motherwell, Sam Francis, Cleve Gray), Pop and Op art (Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers, Robert Indiana, Tom Wesselman, Jim Dine), Conceptual (Christo, Sol LeWitt), and Photo-Realism (Robert Cottingham). Examples of twentieth-century sculpture include Harriet Frishmuth, Paul Manship, Isamu Noguchi, George Segal, and Stephen DeStaebler. We continue to acquire contemporary works by notable artists, in order to best represent the dynamic and evolving narrative of American art.

Mr. Tuthill and I climbed the north Chimney a year before and rappelled the north Face. I thought it looked deliciously exposed, but way above my skill level at the time. I had to try, but it wasn't so bad. The exposure lived up to my expectations!

Stayed up late to see Lindsey Yung in concert at LeStats West. Dad and I went to Lindsey's Christmas show a couple of years ago.
