Most of us never think of Turkey Vultures as hunters, yet thy're classified as raptors. After years of watching these birds, sometimes four or five at one, soaring on thermals, I finally saw one on the hunt. Of course, he had to land behind a boulder with his prey. I'm not sure what the prey was; I'd have guessed a fish since we were at the slough, but maybe he was just scavenging. I'll never know. I didn't have the patients to stand in the cold damp air for 20 minutes while he enjoyed himself. As I turned away to head back to the bridge, I saw that he was joined by which I thought was a female (larger than him). I can always go back into the archives to be sure, but sometimes it's just as well not to care.

A raptor? Yes. Turns out that the sharped hooked beak and the fact that it actually hunts as well as living off carrion makes it a "bird of prey" and according to Cornell, is classified as a raptor. It's nearest relative, btw, is the Black Vulture.

The town of Safranbolu with its seemingly randomly settled Ottoman style houses...

The prominent structure in front is a caravanserai known as Cinci Han (in Turkish), and it dates from 1645. Google translates Cinci Han as the "Exorcist Inn". I suppose the original owner was a spiritual person, rather than being an actual exorcist a la the movie.

Safranbolu is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which explains why in winter the air quality is almost as bad as Sarajevo. No infrastructure upgrade is allowed to bring in natural gas, and therefore, coal it is for heating.

I spotted three Turkey Vultures in a recently plowed field, two more Turkey Vultures circled above. I could not see what they were going after.

A curious hen turkey checks out this new fawn as mother gives it a tender bath. A delightful moment. The turkey didn't stay long after mother noticed it.

Thank you for taking a look. Always appreciated!

Not the best quality as it's through the window of the plane, but the Turkish coastline is beautiful

Bosnian Controlled Turkey 2046

After the Bosnian evacuation the entire country fell into disarray, the last Bosnian controlled territory, Turkey was the main source of these problems. Mass protests in multiple cities turned violent as soldiers took matters into their own hands by firing on the crowd killing 13. These protests turned into the December Revolution which was quickly quelled. Then 2 weeks after the last of the revolutionaries were silenced or killed a second revolt broke out this one toppled the already weak Bosnian government. Within 2 months the new government collapsed and the last bits of the Bosnian "empire" died. What was left of Turkey is now in anarchy.

Turkey Vultures are not endangered, but many vulture species world-wide face dwindling numbers. They have the obvious clean-up role. But I just learned of another: "Another role vultures play is aiding in catching poachers. When poachers illegally kill animals, they leave the carcass behind. After vultures find the carcass, they circle above the dead animal. This behavior leads authorities to the poached animals. Because vultures aid authorities, many people kill the birds. After collecting the skins or other prizes, the poachers poison the remaining carcass. Consequently, poisoned vultures then become deadly to other scavengers. . . . Of the 23 species [of vultures worldwide], 16 of them are considered endangered, vulnerable, or threatened."--International Vulture Awareness Day site

There were a few of these guy's flying along the rocks of the dam at Peace Valley Park, New Britain Pa.

We counted 24 of these birds in one group of trees right outside work. Then one day an owl moved in and the Turkey Vultures all relocated..

Turkish pigeon

The Turkish laughing pigeon or Turkish pigeon is a species of bird from the pigeon family. It gets its name because the species has only migrated from the southeast to central and since then to northern and western Europe since the 1930s.

It was less than fifty years ago that the first Turkish pigeons were sighted in Germany. As far as can be traced today, this species originally occurred from the Near East to western China in the east and Ceylon in the south. Here were two pigeons in my garden

Hand turkey! Not the easiest thing in the world to shape, and the build is actually fairly technical, but I'm very satisfied with how simple the end result looks.
