Did you know there are five subspecies of wild turkey in North America? However, Florida is the only place in the world where the Osceola subspecies is found. Also known as the Florida wild turkey, this unique bird lives only on the Florida peninsula. It’s similar to the eastern subspecies, which is found in north Florida, but tends to be smaller and darker with less white barring on the wings.
Many people don’t know that wild turkeys are powerful fliers. They can fly as fast as 55 miles per hour for short distances. However, to conserve energy, turkeys spend most of their time on the ground, where they search for acorns, seeds, fruits, leaves, insects, small reptiles, frogs, snails and more. They are woodland birds, preferring open forests and where forests and fields meet.
Wild turkeys are social animals and typically flock together in groups. These wary birds have excellent eyesight and will run away or fly to a tree to escape danger. At night, they roost in trees to avoid ground predators.
“Wild turkeys are an amazing conservation success story in Florida and across North America,” said Brian Yablonski, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Chairman. “They had almost disappeared by the turn of the century, with populations remaining in remote pockets of habitat. However, thanks to science-based wildlife restoration efforts, today Osceola and eastern wild turkeys are thriving throughout the state.”
I found these two along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.

Mike and I were picking up our order at the Tim Horton's drive through when I spotted these turkeys strutting in the parking lot.
...actually taken last Spring. This beautiful turkey and myself will be in hiding for Thanksgiving Holidays.

A mai aszfaltozott utak helyén évszázadokkal ezelőtt is forgalmas karavánutak húzódtak. Mivel a teherhordóknak és állataiknak is szükségük volt pihenőre, kiépültek a karavánszerájok, egymástól megfelelő távolságra. Néhányuk még ma is megtalálható, emlékeztetőnek.
Sultanhani faluban található a Sultan karavánszeráj, melyet Alaeddin Keykubad szultán rendeletére, majd Giyaseddin Keyhüsrev idején fejeztek be.
12 m magas falait változatos formájú tornyok tagolják. Márványfaragású bejárata egy belső udvarba, a nyári lakba vezet. Ennek egyik oldalán helyezték el a kocsikat, állatokat, a másik oldalán sorakoztak a szobák. Középen állt egy kis mecset is. A nyári rész mögött volt a csaknem ugyanakkora méretű, fedett téli lak is. Az egész terület a falakon belül 117 m hosszú és 49 m széles.

I hope you have a wonderful time with your families, gathered around the turkey meal. We have so much to be thankful for.
I captured these flying turkeys 13 years ago as I was walking through the woods in February. You can see the snow on the ground of a field of golden grasses.
Not the sharpest shot but it fits the bill for the Holiday, so I'll post it anyway. That said, I do like the colors and their flying behavior a lot here.
Turkeys prefer to walk and run, but when surprised or chased by predators, they can fly very well for short distances.
They will also fly into the air and into a tree to roost for the night, which is what they were doing here. After they passed me here, I watched them disappear into some large trees to roost.
What a thrill to see this action up close!
Central Florida hosts both Turkey and Black vultures. There are Turkey Vultures in NC, but I mostly see the Black variety in Chatham County. I love them all. Have a great weekend!
A Turkey Vulture I captured sitting by side of the road. He was eating some road kill and had flew a few feet back off the road when I drove by. I had turned around and pulled over to grab some pictures of him. I don't think he was too happy with me.....lol

A turkey vulture playing tug-o-war with a large carp.
Reminds of the last time I had lunch with my brother, Andy. The waiter put the check on the table, and I picked it up. Andy grabbed it and we played tug-o-war over who would pay. Andy pulled harder. As he won the Tug, he simultaneously pulled his lunch into his lap. "I guess lunch is on you today, Andy." Andy was not amused.
The Rustem Pasha Mosque is an Ottoman mosque in the Tahtakale neighborhood of the Eminonu district.Istanbul, Turkey. It was the first time I had ever entered a mosque. The women had to cover their heads with a scarf, and everyone removed their shoes and placed them in a bag. The small mosque was quiet and peaceful, and it is said to be one of the most beautiful in the entire world.
